There are approximately 25,000 Scientologists and about 20,000 of them live here in Clearwater where I live. The other 5000 are spread around the world with about 4000 in California. There are $100,000,000 100,000 square foot Scientology centers staffed by 10 people in some cities but every time someone who is lost walks in to ask for directions to the train station they punch a clicker adding them to the membership rolls.

Theres a couple of quotes attributed to hubbars such as "the easiest way to enslave a man is promise him his freedom" something scientology does in a big way "lets sell them a piece of blue sky" which inspired a book exposing $cientology called A Piece of Blue Sky. And his most famous quote, apparently had several semi-famous wittnesses (who were all part of a writting circle who would drink and play poker at some bar) "the easiest way to earn money is to start your own religion" Ive probably messed those quotes up a little but thats the jist.

That last quote is pretty close to the version that I have heard from the DeCamp cocktail party I mentioned in a comment above.

His band Return to Forever and it's song titles are all scientology references. The reason the classic quartet spit up was because Al and Lenny had enough of Scientology. Chick thanks Hubbard in every liner note of his albums. He actually made an album with Hubbard (though I never heard it) and called him "A true Renaissance man". Stanley Clarke left the church but is still a bit positive about it. Chick also created this studio called Mad Hatter Studio's in LA somewhere in the 80ies (a reference to Alice in Wonderland). He sold it to the Scientology church but sometimes still records there I think. There is actually a Chick Corea documentary on scientology tv. As far as I know, Chick is still active in scientology and feels like it helped him connect to his audience and finds his style and intrinsic motivation to play. To be fair, while my personal opinion is that it's all bogus and more like a pyramid scheme, I am convinced that it did inspire Chick to do the music he did.
