There are very few characters who have had a larger impact on the show and more importantly, Rick Grimes, than Shane Walsh did. While only being in 2 of 11 seasons of the show, the impact that Shane had on our characters is still present to this very day.

During that stand-off at the Farm, Shane never wanted to kill Rick. He had every opportunity and never pulled the trigger. You can see in his face at a point that it pains him to be doing that. But it was all an act to get Rick to grow some balls and cross the line. Shane was carrying too much emotional weight from knowing that Judith is his but will never BE his, so he lost the will to live. Forcing Rick to kill him in cold blood would ensure that Rick would change enough to be able to protect his family (all of whom Shane loved). And once again, he was right about that too. Rick only understood it waaaay down the line which is why he admits he regrets killing Shane in 9x5.

For me, him trying to kill Rick or letting Rick kill him can both be true. I think he was willing to kill Rick if he saw that Rick still couldn’t step up and take him out when he knows how dangerous he is to the group and would’ve believed that Rick was too weak to take care of them. However, like you said, I think Shane would’ve been fine or may have been trying to get Rick to kill him and would’ve accepted dying that way as well. Jon Bernthal, Shane’s actor, seems to confirm this too. It seems like Shane realized and knew one of them needed to die there.

Shane was the most misunderstood character in the Walking Dead. Yes, he had his moments where his temper would get the best of him, but that’s because the group at the time was still trying to adapt to the new world. 1. Keeping Randall alive while his group intentionally tried to kill Rick and Hershel at the bar was a huge risk. Randall even admitted to Shane right before he killed him, that his group was rough sometimes, especially towards women. Whose to say he wouldn’t have gathered up his people to the farm to get revenge? 2. Hershel was completely delusional keeping a barn full of walkers next to his family and the group. Even if he truly believed he could have saved those people, he was a threat to the group and himself had Shane not opened the barn. 3. Killing Otis wasn’t the moral choice but it was the only way he could have saved Carl. Both of them were injured and Otis was clearly out of shape to go any longer. This was still early in the apocalypse where walkers were considered fresh and more agile. Shane and Otis would have both died which means Carl wouldn’t have got the medical supplies needed to live. Shane definitely had his flaws but he was the only one at the time who could make the tough calls for survival. Like he told Rick, “You can’t just be the good guy and expect to live, not anymore.”

Honestly, the whole reason why I can’t *completely* get behind Shane as a character is because of how he treated Lori. They both had their faults in the relationship, but the dude literally assaulted her and just generally wouldn’t take no for an answer. Their whole relationship since Lori found out Rick was alive was literally just: *Shane:* I love you. We should be together. *Lori:* I was only with you because you told me my husband was dead. I have no feelings for you. At least not anymore. Ergo, I don’t want to be with you. *Shane:* I’m gonna take that as a, “Try harder.” Obviously Shane was way ahead of the curve and I can love him for that, but the dude was out of line in so many ways when it came to her.

Yeah, she was manipulating both of them. Sending mixed signals to Shane whenever it benefited her and then completely rejecting him again a few scenes later. She told Rick that Shane needed to be dealt with and that he was trying to take her and Carl away from him. Her reaction to Shane's death actually put Rick in a rage because he spent most of the remaining time she was alive, distancing himself from her and being extremely cold. She was ultimately responsible for Shane's death and Rick knew it. If people couldn't see what she was doing prior to his death, I'm surprised they missed the most obvious sign when she rejects Rick's embrace shortly after finding out he killed Shane. It was in that moment Rick realized she loves Shane and as I mentioned, he distances himself from her completely after that. There wasn't even much of reconciliation between them before she dies.

@@panspermiapancakesin my opinion, i don't think that's why lori was disgusted. after hearing rick say he killed shane she was obviously shocked, and decided to talk to him personally. she was upset but accepted it, hugging him, then stepping back ready for him to turn towards her (as he had his back facing her). she only rejected his embrace after he told her that carl was the one who shot him after he reanimated into a walker. that was too far for her as she wanted to protect carl from becoming cold which as a mother makes sense. i'm not defending lori but she also has a right to be shocked after hearing what happened it wasn't easy for anyone. rick also didn't hate lori after that, if you watch season 3, rick breaks down and admits to lori (who he believes he's talking to on the phone) that he did still love her more than anything, but he couldn't be vulnerable and let shane's death and everything that went down get to him or else he wouldn't be able to lead and protect the group. he still loved lori and loved shane but couldn't risk breaking down and not being able to lead the group. rick is a great man who put his family and the group before himself that's why he's the goat of the show😊
@panspermiapancakes
@panspermiapancakes Год назад
@@ericacullen I just watched that scene again and I'd say you made a fair assessment. Granted, she did technically start removing her arms from around him the moment he mentioned Shane was killed. However, you're right that she didn't start breaking down and rejecting Rick until he mentions Carl. I can understand where she was coming from when considering it from a motherly perspective since you mentioned it. I know that Rick still loved her but I felt like his distancing himself from her was an appropriate reaction to how she reacted to learning about Shane's death. If we want to be fair here towards Rick, Carl was only out in that field when Shane reanimated into a zombie is because Lori was supposed to be watching Carl at the farm house but like always, she lets him out of her sight and he takes off. Her reaction to Rick still wasn't called for because the only reason Carl shot Shane is because she let Carl out of her line of supervision. I don't hate Lori, I think she is was an extremely accurate depiction of a real life woman that would have done anything needed to keep her son safe and that includes hooking up with a guy like Shane to keep him safe. The writing in the first two seasons were phenomenal when it came to group interactions and dialogue. It all felt so real with how each person was handling the outbreak. Lori's actress gets too much hate, she was doing everything the show writers wanted. lol

disregarding the whole lori plot line (don’t even argue me he assaulted her), Shane was just too prepared for the world. others in the group wanted to cling to the way things were, to hold onto the ways of the old world even if that meant putting themselves or others in danger (risking people to go and look for Sophia, even though that almost got Daryl killed). He had a level head about the way things were now, it’s just the others didn’t see things his way. he was an asshole, stubborn, and in many ways a monster- but he was the blueprint for how the group survived years down the road.

Asking Shane to stay could have been out of guilt. Telling Rick what was going on could have been out of fear especially after Dale got to her. Either way she had to live with her own actions too.
@tiabeaniesemotionalsupportdmon
I’m going to paste something I responded to on another video. Lori giving Shane mixed signals all changes if you look at the scenes closely. See below: Nah, we aren't tripping... Just hear me out. Yes. Lori told Shane to stay twice. The 1st time was S2 E3, IMMEDIATELY after Hershel saved Carl, thanks to Shane retrieving the medical supplies. After Hershel and Rick go to tell Patricia about Otis, Lori turns to Shane and gives a quick nod of appreciation. When Lori is at Carl's bedside, Shane comes in. He just gives her this pleading look like, "Do I still have to go? Can't I stay now?", which makes Lori feel obligated to say yes. In the next episode, Shane asks Lori for the 2nd time, saying, "Did you mean it when you told me to stay?". He asked her because he KNEW he's asked her that at the most vulnerable time he possibly could have. Shane had heard Carl was awake, and she says, yes and that he will make it. You NEVER see him go back in that room to check in on Carl again (after he returns with the supplies), so the ONLY REASON he went in there at that exact moment was to ask her to let him stay. That was the main thing he was worried about. This makes me seriously question his motives when he volunteered to go to the High school. Yes, he would do whatever he could to save Carl's life. It's obvious that he cares for him very much, but it feels like he KNEW Lori would feel indebted to him, and that is incredibly manipulative!! Go back and watch her facial expressions when he asked her if she meant it. She is caught between a rock and a hard place... what else could she say to that?? Pressuring her like that was a pretty rotten thing to do, if you ask me. Look, Lori was a poorly written character at times, to be sure. You can see it multiple times throughout her run on the show. No argument from me there. Still... that doesn't negate the fact that Shane was a dick. He always did whatever he wanted, no matter what everyone else thought, and did not care if there were consequences. The ONLY time I saw Shane do something completely selfless was when he saw Carol stumble out of the bush after she lost Sophia. He helped her clean up, and I swear it made me wonder what he was up to, lol. Rick seemed more like a Beta in S1 and S2 to me, even though everyone else saw him as the Alpha. Even Daryl said to Dale that when it comes down to it, Rick ultimately looks to Shane. Lori only tells Rick that Shane is a danger after Dale tells her what happened to Otis. TBH, Dale really should have told Rick that Shane had him in his crosshairs back in S1. Everyone can see Shane spiraling. In S2 E9, Shane tells Lori that the two of them were "a long time coming". This shows me that Shane had had his eye on Lori LONG before Rick's accident or the start of the apocalypse. God, he was manipulative in so many ways! She then tells Rick that Shane is delusional, as he truly believes they should've been together a long time ago. Also, Shane KNEW there was a chance that Rick didn't die when the machines he was hooked up to at the hospital lost power, otherwise why would he have put that hospital bed up as a barricade in front of the door to Rick's room? He never told Lori, nor did he ever try to go check on the man who was his partner, best friend, and like a brother to him! Lori is right when she says he is delusional. He is becoming more deranged by the day. Shane steadfastly believes something that is NOT TRUE, except in his own mind. This is what makes her warn Rick about him. It's that, plus the totality of everything (minus the issues she is unaware of, ie: Dale's concerning run-ins with Shane) that scares her. She knows he killed Otis and left him behind so he could get back to her and Carl. He says he loves her and that they are supposed to be together... and this puts her husband at risk!! When Rick hears this, he realizes she is right, as that is EXACTLY why he himself killed the two guys at the bar- so he could get back to his family. He says, "It was gonna be me [that lives] and not them, no matter what". She clarified the he killed the living to protect what is his, and that Shane thinks they are HIS. He thinks Rick cannot protect them and is going to get them killed. She is NOT wrong when she says he is dangerous and won't stop. They know him well and are aware that he will do whatever he wants and is unconcerned about the consequences... as I said earlier. In S2 E10, when Rick pulls the car over to talk to Shane, he admits to Rick that he killed Otis. When he hears him say that it had to be him who survived and Otis that died, Rick knows without a doubt that Shane will see it the same way with him. When Rick says it took everything in him not to beat the shit out of Shane when he realized he'd slept with Lori, Shane sees how mentally strong Rick is (compared to himself), he knows they will end up fighting, and that Rick won't go down easily. He hears him say that he will stay alive in order to keep his family alive, and Shane realizes he will have to try to kill him. Shane then sees that lone walker in the field. I think he knows that if he doesn't change course, he will end up just like that... and SURPRISE!! Shane becomes a lone walker in a field at the end of it all. When they arrive at their destination, Shane does confess that he doesn't think Rick can keep them safe, just like Lori said. Then, when he realizes Daryl has now become Rick's right hand man, he sinks even deeper. Yes, Lori inadvertently opens a can of worms when she goes to talk to Shane by the windmill (and that’s not her fault), but here's the bigger picture: she goes to APOLOGIZE to him for her part. She says she is sorry for putting the two of them at odds, unnecessarily complicating things. I think she thought he and Rick had let things go and were starting fresh, as that can happen sometimes after guys fistfight. She is empathetic with him, saying she knows how hard it must be for him that he might be the biological father, but that the baby can never be his. She also thanks him from the bottom of her heart for protecting her and Carl, and for being there for her. She genuinely apologizes for things getting confused between the two of them (for him AND for her), but at NO POINT has she EVER let him think there could ever be anything between them again, and that she is committed to Rick. Her coming to him to thank him and to apologize for the bad times IN NO WAY means she wants him back. I do not understand why someone would think it does. To me, it seems like the entire group, minus Shane, wants to move forward and get along. She was being the bigger person by going to him in order to clear the air. It is NOT her fault that he assumed there could be something still there. Shane just heard what he desperately wanted to hear. When someone assumes and doesn't communicate to be clear, it makes it incredible difficult to have a conversation in the future. It is immensely frustrating and does nothing to help the situation, and it may make that person feel unable to approach them again. Shane wasn't wrong about everything. He was spot on about stopping the search for Sophia after coming to the conclusion that she was probably already dead by then, about what to do with Randall, about the walkers in the barn, and about Rick being more concerned about the hostage than with his own son. He is simply too aggressive and refuses to listen to others' viewpoints... then he goes and does what he wants anyway. He is headstrong, and is NOT a team player. Add all these issues up, and take into consideration that he is becoming increasingly unhinged, and you've got a BIG problem!!

In my opinion, The Governor significantly impacted group by changing their perspective about people and viewing everyone as a threat. They had numerous chances to assassinate The Governor, but they chose not to, and that it cost them everything. The Governor took advantage of the fact that they were still somewhat civilized toward everyone and attacked them twice, destroying their home and killing many of the people they cared about. That changed them forever. Their perspective of people was changed as a result of those events because to The Governor. They eventually came to view people as being more dangerous than Walkers. I agree that Lori is very clear with Shane, verbally. However, it seems pretty obvious that she is hedging her bets, and making sure Shane will still be there for her, if something happens to Rick. She doesn't let Shane get too far away, before she reels him back in with her actions. I like to think this is why there's so much focus on Rick "leaving his family" to go on various runs and undertake various tasks. It's meant to elevate the possibility, in Lori's mind, that perhaps Rick won't return from one of these outings, and she will have to go back to plan B. If there's any doubt as to her intentions, it's made pretty clear by her reaction to finding out that Rick killed Shane. Shane was her back up plan. Rick took away an option for her and her burgeoning family, and she resented it.

Shane was very far ahead of the curve, and that's why most people hated him at first and why TWD fans cringe when thinking about Season 5 Rick, since Season 5 Rick became what Shane was in Season 2. Honestly Shane was one of my favorite characters early on in the series and it sucked to see him die and leave the show, however I take solace in how Negan more or less replaced what would be Shane and that could be why I liked Negan early on as well. They're both people who knew that kindness can only get you so far in a world without order and that has man-eating monsters roaming around. Maybe the similarities is why Rick chose to save Negan? Maybe he regretted killing Shane and wanted to try and make up for it to Lori' spirit to prove that he hadn't become a heartless man and still has some compassion left in his heart? In a panel with Jon Berenthal, the idea of the scene where Shane dies is that he was supposed to know that his gun was unloaded the whole time, meaning that at the end, he actually wanted to get killed by Rick. After i saw this it actually changed my whole perspective of the scene. Shane was a good guy deep down but he went mad crazy with Lori, and even then, he felt bad about sleeping with Rick's wife, and i doubt that he tried to kill him with that Key, he had all the chances then and also before. After all the lies and going insane over a sexual adventure, he probably reached a point where he couldn't take it anymore and wanted to die, and at the same time test Rick to see if he had what it was necessary to protect his family.

One of the biggest problems with Shane in my mind is he was ruthless. Everyone in the show is ruthless now but not like Shane was. He shot ottis in the leg and left him behind as bait so he could escape. None of our characters today would do that to someone who is an ally. They might do it to an enemy but in my mind that’s different then doing it to someone who is part of your group. Ottis shot Carl on accident and never did anything to threaten the group he was quick to volunteer to get the supplies to help save his life.

The Walking Dead demonstrates better than alot of media that the right thing, the smart thing, to do isn't cut and dry or set in stone. Shane murdered two people and tried to kill Rick, so Rick killed him, and that decision saved his life. Later when Carol murders two people in the prison community, instead of killing her, Rick sends her away, that decision also saved his life. In Season 5 Rick basically became a feral pack animal, and that kept him and his family alive. Season 6 onward Rick transitions slowly back into a much more compassionate and trusting person, and in doing that he became a great leader and an essential figure in the rebuilding of civilization. Ultimately the biggest difference between Shane and Rick is that Shane was completely willing to let his surroundings change him, whereas Rick at his core is someone who wants to change his surroundings, and throughout the series we see the give-and-take of both philosophies.

And season 4 mid season finale wheh the governor was choking out rick , it should have been Shane coming back to killing the governor to save rick and for them two to reunite as best friends again and have Shane come back since leading at the beginning of season 2 a new man meaning just him getting over Lori and not wanting Rick dead and them finally getting along . And yeah Rick would of course have to tell Shane that Lori died when he was away before he came back. And then we see him finding out her lose and it makes both shane and rick stronger then ever with working together and see Shane feel sorry for rick losing her . Rick and Shane would be more unstoppable if they were together throughout the show

I think another cool idea would be to have Shane come back (after being banished) as Negan's right hand man. After he sees what Negan does to Glenn, he begins to question himself and who Negan really is, which leads him to eventually betray Negan. After a while of Shane sabotaging Negan's operations, Negan eventually finds out and confronts Shane. Shane, seeing the writing on the wall, tries to kill Negan. They get into a fight, Shane stabs Negan, almost killing him, but another Savior comes in just in time to kick Shane off. Shane, now at gunpoint, and Negan exchange a couple of hostile words, and Negan orders the other savior to shoot Shane, killing him. Negan, now gravely injured, is bedridden and weak, something he desperately tries to keep hidden from Ricks group. Nevertheless, Rick learns of what Shane did and of Negans state, and they launch a hasty attack. They storm the savior compound at night, catching everyone off guard, and, after suffering a few casualties of their own, they manage to take a good portion of the compound, thanks to the Saviors disarray with Negan absent on the battlefield to give them orders. They make it to Negans room, which is ultimately how they capture and imprison him in Alexandria.
