If you are a seafarer, you must have faced the following questions from a landlubber-
How does ship stop in the water? or
How does ship brake system work?
A ship can be braked, but not by using a conventional braking system. It uses various methods, sometimes applied individually, and sometimes combined, to brake and maintain station (geographic position).
In normal conditions, the Marine Engine of the ship is reversed or the CPP propeller pitch is altered to change the thrust direction of the propeller, which gradually stops the ship.
When the ship needs to stop in an emergency, Crash Stop Maneuver is done, or the Anchors of the vessel are dropped, in case the main engine is not available.
A ship is a sluggish body, and therefore it has a certain lag of response to the action carried out to bring about any change in its motion. Ships are not braked conventionally, instead, cannot be braked conventionally primarily because of the medium in which it moves.
This video helps in understanding the physics behind the stopping of a ship at sea. When at harbour or port, the station is maintained by mooring lines that tether the ship to the berths.

Not *entirely* true that a sudden stop isn't possible, but that is referred to as running aground. After all, the only thing harder to stop a water craft is stopping a spacecraft. I'm also old enough to remember how synchro motors that the old engine telegraphs required. A ship can stop on a dime, it's just that that dime has to be pretty damned big, as in miles. Unless it has a handy continent to run into, then it'll stop swiftly, but few will appreciate that kind of a short stop. Excellent video!

Won’t reversing the direction of the propeller while moving forward create a vacuum and make the rudder usable and cause a loss of control? This seems dangerous, and I doubt captains would ever stop like this.

for the crash maneuvering topic, you have said fuel cam will not change its position due to running direction interlock as per my understanding running direction interlock only stops fuel injection by sending signal to cut out servomotor, it is no where responsible for stopping cam rotation . should'nt it be when we give astern command on telegraph , air distributer cam and fuel cam reverses direction ,but when we give air break fuel will not be injected due to running direction interlock. my doubt is fuel cam should also turn, please clarify

Can't we reverse the ship at full speed to immediately stop it and when it stops the engine should be kept at stop position, will it work?
@marineinsight
@marineinsight 4 года назад
When the ship is moving at full speed and to stop it, fuel is curoff....due to the speed of the vessel and the momentum, the engine will keep rotating in the ahead direction till it comes to rest. For immediate stoppage, crash maneuvering is done by applying brake air.

Bit confusing it is. How the changing firing order will reverse the direction of rotation of engine crankshaft? Suppose it is 4-1-3-2, what will be the order to reverse the direction of rotation? And how it is possible? As pistons are getting fired as usual. It is 2 stroke engine having suction compression and expansion exhaust at a time. For changing crankshaft rotation you have to change the direction of force application on crankshaft.
@marineinsight
@marineinsight 4 года назад
As you said correo, for change of direction , the direction of force applied on the crankshaft needs to be changed. The crank webs are scattered at different angles for each unit. Hence, for revesing the direction, those units firing order are choose Whose crank web assist in reversing the engine.

In normal operation, when the engine is shut down in neutral, how much time is needed for the engine to switch from ahead to astern?
@marineinsight
@marineinsight 4 года назад
As soon as the fuel kicks in, the crankshaft hence the propeller will start rotating in the astern direction, however, due to the momentum of the ship which is still sailing ahead, it will take little time to get it in the aster direction.

Power of displacement when any obeject enters in water it displaces water equal to its own mass thus water exterts upwad force on it so if the obeject is denser than water it sinks but jf its less dense it floats . Steel ship floats because of this air inside the ship makes air ship combo less dense than water hence it floats for eg when titanic hit iceberg water statred entring it displacing the air when enough water displaced air and took its place ship water combo became more dense than sea water and it sank

If there is space the fastest way to stop a vessel is to make a hard turn. Keep full speed, give full rudder (best effect is if you turn so the propeller effect is helping the turn) until 90 degrees from the initial course. Then reverse engine until stopped. This manoeuvre can not be done in restricted waters, like in a canal or river. In more restricted waters it possible to make repeatedly zig-zag manoeuvres to help reduce the speed. This way you will have a bigger surface area against the direction of movement.
