My relative who’s a retired architect once asked LKY how were they able to develop without resources when he visited his office, Lee Kuan Yew humbly replied that all he needed was his people to develop.

And the net outcome of that will be that more populous countries that are further behind in investment will be too late to solve their issues which will have enormous ramifications on their people whereas smaller nations like Singapore have more maneuverability and agility when it comes to survival.

The biggest evidence of this is israel, look at all the innovation that comes from that country, most of it with the incentive to outdo everyone else for the sake of its security .

Sadly, the "necessity" of the the leaders in most of the developing countries are to create personal wealth and maintain it by holding on to power, "profitability". Take examples of any nation with a political family/ clan. That's why some nations flourish and other are stagnant for decades.

Sometimes you wonder if LKY can do as good in current climates where image and perception are more important than cold hard facts. He was from a time where strict governments of tough love were considered norms and citizens' concerns many times come a distant second to "greater good" govt policies. Even right now the Singapore Govt has frequently been criticized by its own citizens as being "too soft" and lack the ballsy-ness of the earlier generations. The earlier gen leaders were not afraid to not bend to outside pressure if it truly meant that was what Singapore needed to do. Current leaders seem much softer and pliant to globalism.

@@noblestar7742 We'll see how Singapore manages it's interactions with other countries in the coming years, where I guess some may ponder whether increasing dependence on other countries may make us more susceptible/vulnerable to their influence. As our ministers are saying how it's important to remain open & interconnected, the government has also been viewed as trying to rush through the Foreign Interference Countermeasures Act (FICA), where I think the concern is that it might be overly broad & thus might be too easily used to suppress opposing views. When Singapore deported professor Huang Jing a few years ago for allegedly spying for China, I was also thinking if China would react more strongly & accuse us of betraying the Chinese race (as Singapore has the highest % of Chinese in it's population outside Greater China, & China is possibly intertwining being Chinese as a race & nationality together more closely e.g. by expecting Chinese living outside China to support their foreign policy more strongly, due to loyalty) & how Singapore's government would refute/rebut/respond

So true. I really truly believe that if we all actually paid attention to the politicians we vote for, or the governments we have, things would be wayyyy better. People vote based on very superficial things but if people truly cared about a set of policy platforms rather than a vague likability, we could do a lot. Don’t get tricked into believing a certain segment of the population is against you, and turn things into a tribal war. Always remember that if the poor and middle class succeed, the country succeeds. That’s it. Don’t try to keep one group down

Believe it or not, it’s actually easier to succeed with a smaller land area. Singapore, obviously is successful because of its connection to sea but, Signapore’s GDP % per is so high because of its lack of population and land. It’s Poverty rate, work rate etc. More people are capable of getting jobs because Singapore has a higher job market % than applicants. Something that is much harder with a massive country like the USA. Same reason Emirates and South Korea, Japan etc are all very successful countries

So am I. One can criticize his methods and decisions made. But LKY did a lot to progress so much in such a time.

Singapore's governance is a bit like Asian parenting I think e.g. it might be seen as abit disrespectful & ungrateful to question or not to trust them, given how much the country has developed since independence, & how that might've emboldened our governance. Some have described the governance here as 'paternalistic', which reminded me of when our minister of foreign affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan was asked about China criticising us for our travel ban enacted early last year against those who've been to mainland China within the last 2 weeks (due to the pandemic). I remember he replied: "What else did you expect them to say?" Then in 2018 I also recall our PM Lee Hsien Loong also said something like: "Work-life balance? But our immigrants from India, China (& other less developed countries) aren't asking for that." Which I think might then risk giving new meaning to the phrase "race to the bottom"

I was one of the "keyboard warriors" voicing ideals during my undergrad, but as I go into corporate, I know how hard is to effect change in a highly complex environment. Given the harsh circumstances, statistically Singapore should have never been able to survive, much less thrive. Proud Singaporean here too.

Also remember another instance, where in response to public criticism of the government over some floods that happened here previously (as they were believed to be due to overdevelopment e.g. building the ION Orchard shopping mall at what used to be a park, with the adjacent Orchard Rd then flooding a few times in subsequent years), our PM replied: "But the Japanese didn't complain after the Great _Tohoku_ earthquake"

@@Paciat We do actually educate everyone, at least to some extent. Iirc primary school education is compulsory and heavily subsidised for citizens. In fact, I believe it is illegal not to send your child to a national primary school without exemption.

@@shou4465 Sure, primary school is basic level. But high school for everyone, and with almost 100% of people graduating it, and then having no work after it is just bad. And if Singapore started doing that as well, just as other countries did, that wont be good.

@@Paciat The closest thing we have to high school would be secondary school, of which we had a 96%(?) graduation rate, and I believe we had something like 97-98% literacy rate? Most of us however tend to pursue tertiary education, since we were fed meritocratic ideals since young, so we usually head for further education rather than going to work straight after secondary school. For jobs, I honestly have no input on that, I barely have any job experience and none in my field of study, and besides it's difficult for me to comment on job availability "normally" due to the pandemic right now. Please do tell me more about why we should not try to educate everyone, and instead educate well, if you are inclined to do so

@@shou4465 Peoples lives arent infinite. If you spend a big chunk of your life learning stuff that you wont use in any productive way later on, what was a point of all that? At 4:19 you can hear that you shouldnt want people on social welfare relief. And avoiding that (I think) was the reason of success in Singapore or China. If you donate teachers that teach random stuff, and not carefully selected topics, you are creating an unproductive class inside a society, that will only grow over time. There will always be people needed to take out the trash, drive a truck, operate a crane etc. How much education do you need to do that and how much money are you ready to spend on it?

It's not even up there compared with European countries. Entirely different scales. It may be good for developing countries.

Think Singapore's has quite shrewdly use it's natural limitations to lower political expectations, by arguing to it's populace that populist policies would be delusional as a result (but which probably won't have the same effect in other countries) e.g. that we can't afford a welfare state because we lack natural resources, so we ourselves have to fund our own retirement i.e. CPF instead of the government (via pensions). Without pensions, the age that we get retirement payouts is also not fixed at retirement age, but starts instead at the age you start to retire, & since CPF pays over a fixed duration (20 yrs) starting from retirement, there's now the incentive for the people to retire later (as that'd mean your CPF payout ends at a later age). Probably how while people in France were protesting against raising the retirement age to 62, Singapore meanwhile had some people suggesting raising the retirement age further to 68. The government has also previously said it can't do much about inflation since much of our consumer goods are imported (e.g. 90% in the case of food) & thus dependent more on events outside Singapore. Government supporters have instead told us to practice more austerity instead, which won't have as adverse a contractionary effect on our economy compared to other countries, as it is less reliant on domestic consumption (that'd be reduced by austerity), since a greater proportion of goods consumers buy in Singapore are imported instead of domestically made. Additionally, the government can also argue that the country is small & more crowded, to argue why it should pay less attention to NIMBYs or environmentalists opposing deforestation e.g. to build a new road e.g. Lornie H'way. I recall too that MP Ellen Lee was also bold enough in 2012 to call her voters 'selfish' for opposing an old-folks home built near their house (due to worries about their property being devalued, because of such homes being negatively associated with death etc.)

Yes. there are lots of small countries that are not doing well. Many people decry Singapore's achievement by saying it is easy to do things when a country is small. Well, there is a solution to this. Just do it by cities or by provinces if the country is big. In fact, that was how China did it. It learn from Singapore and had Singaporean consultant, and started by experimenting with a few coastal cities. The rest is history.
