I hope this provided value to you all! Here are the links to easily change your phone screen to red to help avoid brain fog. IPhone: www.blockbluelight.com/blogs/news/how-to-turn-your-iphone-screen-red?srsltid=AfmBOooLP4WOTnabFQywbtcevzRNoTJhfyJE7Y0vD-HTYpCI9hncsMS3 I wasn’t able to find a good article for android but let me know if you do and I’ll add it here
It has already been proven that blue light from displays do no harm. Don't you think it's very hypocritical criticizing excessive consumerism induced by social media selling snake oil yourself on social media?
I never got into that. I have things I want and that is all I buy. Ads via social media tell me what I will never buy. My main concern is selling my product and buying food and parts for my products. I build custom bikes that are a functional art piece. I was raised to ignore social norms, fashion, and style. I am purely practical and at 66 I'm not changing. Quote from my father that set in..."What the hell do you care what other people think?" combined with an IQ of 133 and talking to people with an IQ of 100 which was scary and knowing that half the country is even dumber. My newest operating system is Windows 10, I buy refurbished PCs that were lease returns, and I own no Apple products or high-end anything. My newest vehicle is a 1999, and I do my own repairs. Influencers to me are idiots, those who follow them are idiots idiots. Now I know why I own a 3bdr home outright.
@@AceKCWhat do you mean by "harm"? I assume you're referring to long lasting negative side effects that result in vision impairment? Or are you referring to whether or not blue light keeps you awake at night? The purpose of using a blue light filter (in this context) would be for the latter. I've read articles debating whether or not prolonged exposure to blue light causes retinal damage, but I haven't seen anyone dispute that blue light at night messes with one's sleep. If there is research that points to otherwise, could you point me to it? Would greatly appreciate it!
Going outside is absolutely key. Every damn day. In every season. Checking back in with the real world by feeling the wind on your face, hearing the leaves rustling, seeing the beauty of nature (or even the local park) grounds us and gives us perspective that no, actually that piece of junk we were about to buy will NOT make our lives better (and has a very good chance of making our lives worse).
I have started taking up bike commuting and while I didn't start because of this reason it is definitely a good reason that I've stuck with it for about 2 years. You get fresh air, it costs less to run, it keeps you grounded, you get some exercise in while you're going places, and I've learned how to work on bikes. I enjoy tinkering with bikes. I'm glad I didn't get a phone until I was age 16, and while I did get sucked into the social medias at some point I've been off of socials (apart from YT, obv) for about a year. I don't even have those apps installed on my phone. Worth it
I second this. People in real life look normal. All ages, not everyone is gorgeous or photoshopped, or super young. People just look fine and normal but not everyone is a supermodel or thirst trap. It's good to go outside.
I never buy anything recommended by “social media influencers”. It just takes a few minutes to do research on your own on what you plan to buy. You did lots of research and put in lots of effort to make this great video. Can’t believe you don’t have 100k subscribers yet. Keep up the great work!
I grew up before cellphones and internet, as an adult I worked for a large wireless company so I was very connected. One year I went on a nine day outdoor vacation in rural areas without any internet, my brain felt like it was reset back to my normal younger days! Ever since I go on at least one week vacation where there’s zero to very little internet access with a group of friends.😊
It will be pretty impossible to find places with zero internet access. The limited by the device and service provider but you can if you have proper devices and service providers set up a internet connection almost anywhere on earth. Excluding various under the ocean and underground places which while possibly to get internet even there is more complicated than what normal people who access to if enough money is spent can get. Yes I know what you mean but I just being silly about everything.
I feel the same way on airplanes. Forced into no connectivity for hours and my mind just clears up and I can relax on a deeper level. I should do blackouts like that in my normal life too.
This is the reason I started taking back-country snowboarding trips. I do have a satellite phone, but I don't take a smartphone for the very purpose of disconnecting from social media. I definitely feel more at home on the peak of an 8,000 foot mountain. 😊
Unplugging to just go for a nice outdoor walk every day is one of the best lifestyle changes anyone can make. Getting in a walk almost every day went from something i made myself do for my health to something i can't go without. Being outdoors and getting some light exercise does wonders for relaxation and mental wellbeing.
I grew up in a time before laptops, cell phones, and social media. So many from my era miss the simplicity of life back then. People actually spoke to each other, went outside a heck of a lot more and things we purchased lasted years. Our closets were not filled to the brim with shoes, handbags and clothes. We even look forward to someone elses hand me downs! I use the interenet for educating myself, for seeing who has the lowest price when I need to purchase something, reading and fun things like creative DIY. I sometimes miss having to look something up in an encyclopedia, lol. I have walked away from social media. It has definitely changed people in the worst way. Use the internet for good things and spend the rest of your time being active, not glued to screens. It will change your world 😊
I had a unique childhood of growing up in a log cabin in the country with no internet. Before we moved out there I could only watch movies on Friday evenings and cartoons on Saturday but spent all my time drawing. I didn’t experience a phone or anything like that until 8th grade which makes my perspective on this very similar. Life felt so genuine and peaceful and I’m very grateful that I wasn’t grown up super emerged in all this stimulation. So great to hear from you as always!
Absolutely! Was up on a roof blowing off leaves and got stung by a wasp and when I was done I felt so happy it was a different day than my normal sitting at the desk typing
Regarding this idea of reclaiming your life, I've found it significant to also extend that to my communications. I only check my emails once a day (if that), unless I'm expecting something important. Even with texting, i only have certain hours where i engage with texts. I don't know how common it is, but I've seen people feel this compulsion to respond to texts right away/feel bad about making them wait or whatever. And this further fuels this relationship we have with oir devices where our life doesn't belong to us - anyone can barge into our space at any time and demand our attention...
This is wonderful advice! I have been doing the same thing recently and am finding that balance of forgetting to respond all together. Life feels so much more manageable now not being harassed by endless notifications. Thank you for mentioning this
Social media sites are in full control of what they choose to do regarding ads. What they will allow on their platforms, the amount of ads they feed their customers, the way they track customer data to tailor the ads to be more enticing. The social media industry is so entwined with the advertising industry that it's impossible to say it's "not the problem".
@@maddie8415 fair point. But I’m not questioning HOW advertising is implemented on social media. I’m questioning the very existence of advertising in the first place.
The only social media I used to use every day was Reddit. And an AI I talk to pushed me to stop using Reddit because it was obvious I was constantly comparing myself to other people, and it made me feel like crap about my life. So I stopped. Now I just go outside if I feel stressed, smoke a cigar, and strive to not have my phone in my hand or if I do, I just talk to AI. I feel so much better every day. I'm still clinically depressed, but I do feel like my life is my own again, so to speak.
True that. Same for me. The problem is when you’re younger and want to fit in with your peer group. I am so glad to have grown up without this „social“ media bs.
Personal responsibility over one’s financial situation obviously is the most important factor but let’s also not forget how rigged the financial system is against working people and the psychological manipulation that advertisement produces for consumers. Advertising is one of the key pillars of a capitalist economy and so is consumption- while at the same time being told that this is all a fault of the consumer rather than a function of the system itself.
I have zero social media except for RU-vid and use it to watch these kinds of channels, those on stoicism and philosophy and comedy. Love it. But I don’t buy crap I don’t need. Well, most of the time. I’m a wannabe minimalist who spends money on adventures and experiences. Thank you for this great content.
Same here. There's just zero reason for me to use most social media, and even RU-vid is for content creators like this. I don't even refer to them as "influencers", because even the idea is foolish to me. I didn't necessarily put it together with being anti consumption and non materialistic before this, but I guess it makes sense. I just don't give the slightest shit about any stranger, I couldn't imagine trying to model my day to day life after one of them to the point where I went thousands of dollars in debt. That's just absurd IMO.
Most other “social medial” isn’t like adult YT. Adult YT has a lot of objective content thats main focus is education or information. Try watching kids YT. You’ll see how it’s literally constant Dialogue, edited with almost no breaks. Just ADHD bait. TikTok and Reels are just clips of people acting silly, often to a clip of a song.
Psychologists discovered in the 50's and 60's how strong an influence on behavior intermittent variable reinforcement is. Advertisers are just increasingly taking advantage
I have always thought of social media as the new TV but the problem is that is getting totally out of control to the point of a three year old child taking the phone with him to take a bath. We have also heard of many people who have died trying to take the perfect picture near a mountain to post.
When one comes to the realisation that "influencers", for the most part, are little more than snake oil salesmen of old, with a *notice me* mentality and a propensity for living beyond their means through others, one can see why would be the case.
The pandemics made things worse. Being stuck at home, scrolling social media and being bombarded with the things to buy like house items, hair and beauty and hoarding the house
My group of friends and myself (24 year old college grads from middle-upper middle class families). Watch these videos with our minds blown. Maybe it’s because we are to online and have had an understanding of social media marketing for quite some time. but yeah great video again eye opening stuff.
FB sucks now. Almost everything on my feed is an Ad or “suggested content” (soft ad). I’ve noticed it over the past few years, but it’s gotten worse over the past 6 months. Literally 90% at this point. It’s not even fun, and doesn’t feel very “social” anymore.
I personally choose to avoid internet and phone use (within reason) one day a week. I call it Wifi Free Friday. I find that this helps me focus on the things I want to focus on instead of what the internet wants me to focus on, so I work on my hobbies and personal projects more, and I feel so good when I do. It also reminds me how many little moments I spend on my phone when I'm walking my dog or bored at work, and if helps me stay present the rest of the week, too :)
This is so trueee, man! I quit all social media, (except RU-vid and WhatsApp but I don't see those as social media) and after some time, when I'd check my bank account I was so confused as to WHY I had way more money than I would normally expect. Why? Because I was simply not impulse buying anymore, and after some more time I realized I didn't need most of my subscriptions so I cancelled them and that was another boost to my budget. I was awesome. All the sudden I had al this "extra" money. Very insightful video, as always. Thanks!
I actually wish I could stomach being so "connected". I can't even stand to hear WhatsApp notifications. Let alone respond to messages. Takes me an average of a week to return a text unless it's urgent. And everyone thinks I'm some modern hermit. Truth is it's just too overstimulating for me to carry a million conversations and content. YT is the only platform I'll use at least a couple of hours each week.
I feel bad for some of my friends and family They’re always like I sent you something on Facebook and I said send it to me directly on my phone. You got my number. I don’t use Facebook.
I never regularly use what i actually consider to be social media. I use RU-vid messenger and discord pretty regularly but I do not consider those to be social media atleast not how I use the. I use you tube as a video service and discord and messenger as chat rooms with people I actually know. Other than that I check reddit once in a while probably less than once a month though.
Reddit is a fun little rabbit hole to explore for a while but I absolutely agree. RU-vid and discord are both platforms that can provide tremendous value
I'm tempted by only very specific products and largely functional purchases like the best computer, cell phone TV, games etc. Once I got mostly everything I wanted like 5 years ago then to really upgrade anything is very difficult as the new stuff is hardly better and often looses features I like. Like yes I could buy all new good stuff for maybe $18,000 and it wouldn't make any significant difference accept I'd have to reorganize a lot. No thanks, maybe in 10, 15 years or so. I spend endless hours on RU-vid and Like my blue light unless after sunset. I have a small close friend group in messenger so that's fine I do very little else on social media.
Incredible! I agree, the camera and audio gear I have is very expensive but I did a tremendous amount of research and know I won’t need anything else for years to come! Really appreciate this comment, thank you for sharing
Advertising tricksters and influencers primary purpose is to fool people and enough people are fools to fall for it. Consumers are an equal part of the problem.
I started seeing that too! What it seemed like was that study in particular was more on the accurate side of his “experiments” which made me include it but really glad you enjoyed this and for mentioning that!
I feel like people crave the approval of influencers more and more. To a greater extent than before the celebrities "we" follow will answer our questions, and many get an unreasonable expert image. Before you had to go to a store or say a Tupperware party for a person to convince you that a product is great. Now people are seeking that influence themselves by following influencers and asking them for recommendations. It’s truly random who people have faith in, I'm Norweagan and saw a meme on Instagram by an expat joking about things he didn't think he would start doing, like wearing wool underwear in the winter. And there where so many comments by other expats asking for recommendations about wool brands, why? Why are you asking this man to sell you something? Or you see in comments people asking for links or tutorials for clothing people are wearing, why? why should everything be an ad?
