Sonic Adventure had a rather troubled development history back in the 90s, but there is a ton of details that aren't that well known about the making of Sonic Adventure and the jump to 3D for Sonic. / rocketsloth
This is our 3rd ever sonic video! We feel like we are learning so much as we work on these videos! We want to keep improving, so any constructive feedback is welcome. Thanks
Correction: Sonic World in Sonic Jam had nothing to do with X-treme. That was entirely from the Japanese side of things; that was a prototype for Sonic Adventure back when the project was meant for the Saturn. Sonic Team were given the dev kit for the Dreamcast and decided to shuttle work on the Saturn version, but didn't want to let their work go to waste, so they used what they had to create Sonic World. Just about nothing from X-treme went into Sonic Adventure other than the 3D concept.
14:05 A correction here, the SA1 port on these consoles, regardless of being an DX upgrade, it was still just SADX. It's the same thing, just with the DX content cut out, to be sold as DLC. Which is exactly the same thing they did for SA2 later on, where they would give you the "Battle" content separately.
Jam's Sonic World had nothing to do with Xtreme, it was a small part of the Saturn version of Adventure, cut out and polished up to be a small preview of what was to come. The Saturn version of Adventure wasn't "scrapped", the final game was built on the same planning but heavily overhauled. The screenshot at 9:10 wasn't even recognized as Sonic until after we first saw footage of Speed Highway- until then people thought it was an unrelated motorcycle game The rental deal for the US release was for allowing players to rent a Dreamcast console and an early US version of the game titled Sonic Adventure Limited Edition weeks before release, and it was through Blockbuster, not Hollywood Video.
Hollywood Video had systems available for rent starting in July 1999, along with a handful of games -- Sonic Adventure, Ready 2 Rumble, Power Stone, maybe others. Blockbuster might've gotten a similar deal closer to launch.
Its good that people are talking about misinformation and general lack of research. I personally was just hoping for more talk about the actual development process, which is what I thought i was promised based on the title and thumbnail. Disappointed that thats not what I ended up with very much ot. 90% is just a bunch of history i already knew.
In my opinion this game is miles more impressive than super Mario 64 or Crash bandicoot. And that this game was put together only during 16 months... it's like wow!
It's so weird obvious young people telling others what things were like before they were born. As another person said, you did not do your research very well. I feel this video should be removed for misinformation.
Hey we are always trying to improve our content and research, but could you clarify what you feel like we were inaccurate on? We utilized a lot of sources like sonic central and articles archived from the 90s. Also I was alive during this time 🤔
@rocketone STI did not work on Sonic 3 and Knuckles, they worked on Sonic 2. Xtreme didn't become Sonic Adventure, they are two entirely seperate projects. Sonic World is not Sonic Xtreme, it's an early build of Sonic Adventure they released so their work on the Saturn didn't go to waste. Didn't bother with the rest of the video.
Hi, I looked into this... you are incorrect and must be mistaken. A simple wikipedia search for Sega Technical Institute: "In 1993, STI began work on Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Naka selected the majority of the team, while Hector oversaw development. Due to the game's scope and Sega's commitment to the start date of a corresponding McDonald's Happy Meal promotion and TV ad campaign, the team split the game in half." The page cites a GamesTM article from 2007, and an interview with Yuji Naka from 2014. For Sonic Xtreme, our source was Sonic Retro. This is from the page on sonic xtreme directly, "with the cancellation of Sonic X-treme, the Sega Saturn would not see a core Sonic the Hedgehog title released on the system. Though Sonic Team, fresh from their work on NiGHTS into Dreams, did briefly work on a Sonic title for the system, they realized it would be futile to continue further, seeing as the system's short lifespan was already visible. Taking what they had, they quickly slapped together the Sonic World area in Sonic Jam"
@@rocketone1 you misinterpreted the quote. This was in reference to the fact that the Saturn didn't get a full Sonic game since Xtreme was cancelled and Adventure moved to the Dreamcast. Sonic Xtreme and Adventure were not developed by the same team and are pretty much unrelated. When Xtreme wasn't going to make its holiday release it was the Saturn port of Sonic 3D Blast that was pushed out the door, not Sonic Jam. Sonic Jam was made as a sort of last hurrah for the Saturn when Sonic Team shifted Adventure's development to the Dreamcast. They decided to port the classic games with a giant museum using the beta engine and elements for Adventure's Saturn build.
@EVDESTROY Actually, STI did work on Sonic 3. Yuji Naka left the company after that to make his own team within Sega. The video makes it seem like he wanted to do something else, but the reality he probably didn't like working with Americans. He was apparently very vocal about that. He also sabotaged STI's work on Sonic X-treme. So, yeah, he's kind of an arrogant prick. I'm sorry, I kind of went on a tangent there.
(Edit, I have a bad habit of making comments in the middle of the video. I’m sorry.) Hardest development? You forget about Xtreme? That one was dead on arrival, sadly. Would have been cool to play it.
At least watch a video that was researched thoroughly and actually done by someone that loves sonic and knows what they're talking about. This RU-vid did none of that
yknow, i feel like we are tired of hearing about 06 and boom in every single video we watch, just listening to the intro made me feel like clicking off, but overall good video, some mistakes here and there but good
I just want to point out that 16-18 months was actually the standard for video game development time back then. Crash Bandicoot only stayed in development for 18 months (2 months longer). Also, Mario 64 was in development for 2 years. I know that’s more time than Sonic Adventure and Crash, but still significantly less time than games stay in development today. So if you ask me, Sonic Adventure being in development for this short amount of time is really nothing special.
huh! I had no idea you guys had a second channel, and you cover games from another franchise I like! Weird how the venn diagram of Halo and Sonic fans is nearly a circle.
Actually, Sonic Jam was entirely developed by Sonic Team, including the hub world, which was a prototype of Adventure, as it was originally developed for the Saturn. SA1 and X-Treme were 2 different projects, X-Treme was developed by STI, and SA1 was developed by Sonic Team.
I was just literally playing SA on the Xbox Series X. Unfortunately, as much as I love the game, I couldn't handle the bad controller and the bad camera angels
@@leoleonvids Not to mention how a lot of games made good use of the screen. I enjoyed playing Code Veronica and *not* needing to pause to check my health.
Solid video brother, thank you for making it. I am wondering, if you did cover Sonic X-Treme, how would you stand out against the many others that have already done so (aside from your already quality editing and narration)?
@@ShadowPlushGaming How about you hold off on the critique of another creator's content until after you can at least break 100 views on one of your own videos.
@@willrichard6921"You're not a popular RU-vidr like him so your criticism is invalid!" Your comeback argument is so good that the guy deleted his comment.
We really failed as a community when people started to allow Sonic 06 apologists to speak instead of just laughing at the ridiculous garbage they spout
Don't insult Sonic Boom for no good reason. The Boom games were enjoyable while they existed, and 06 can also be enjoyable if you look past the weird story. Just keep an open mind with these games because Sega did work hard on them, and Rise of Lyric reminds me of Lego video games, but more open world and have more quests, which I'd enjoy playing if I could.
The Boom games were not enjoyable. Rise of Lyric was dogshit and Shattered Crystal and Fire and Ice are both okay. Also, the Boom series is kinda responsible for destroying Sonic's reputation whenever Rise of Lyric released. Also, Sega clearly didn't put any effort into games like 06 or Rise of Lyric. I'm sorry, but that's just the truth. They just wanted those games to be rushed out the door by December so they could cash in on potential holiday sales. In short, there's plenty of reasons to insult Sonic Boom, and they're all well deserved. Only good thing that came out of that era was the Boom TV show, and even that can be painfully mediocre at times to sit through.
Chill out on Biggs fishing. Japanese games before and many after SA have had fishing mini games or segments, yet no one cares. But SA does it and its considered a mistake? Lol ok
Everyone saying how bad and awful Sonic Adventure 1&2 were, saying heroes was trash and saying Unleashed and the story book games were garbage yet they praise real trash like Colors, Sonic SuperStars, Frontiers, Boom, Forces and stupid Sonic Prime? -__- and love reatard the hedgehog in the new Sonic movies? I'm gonna offend EVERY Sonic fan here but.. everything since 2010 HAS BEEN AWFUL and the only decent things we have received since 2010 is a FAN GAME that got the green light from SEGA, which was Mania and Sonic Generations which was a COLLECTION of old games from the past that people USED to love Look, the old games had cheesy lines, had bugs and some gameplay problems but so does every game released by Bethesda yet people still love those games due to how good the story, characters and plot lines were, Fallouts world is really unique and so is Skyrims, Sonic's world was too at one point in time, everyone loved the idea of having a selfless hero who did whatever he could to make the world he was in a better place and he gave you life advice on each and every adventure he took..so what Sonic is full of 90's cheese and dialog? It made him unique, no other character in any other franchise was like Sonic, none of them had that classic 90's attitude, i personally loved that about Sonic, it made him stand out, he was unique, having that "rad and cool" attitude and it was the only franchise that truly felt like it was Rated E for everyone.. it wasn't made for complete moronic babies to sit and drool at ..there was a actual story to it, even in the classic era, if you read the manuals, they all tell a story that was clearly meant for someone with a brain to understand..unlike the Sonic today, where even a two year old can play Sonic Colors since extra lives aren't a thing anymore and Sonic treats you like a no brained idiot that can't understand anything "HA HA BALDY MC NOSE HAIR! look I CAN BREAK THE 4TH WALL CUZ WHY NOT!? NOBODY CARES LOL my audience IS STUPID SO I CAN BE STUPID LOLOL" We went from having actual characters die, having to learn to deal with the loss of someone you care for, Sonic teaching you about how to keep moving forward no matter what hardships you face, to him playing with toilet paper in the new movies, making fart jokes, laughing into the camera 24/7 and having dumbed down, babfied storylines.. VS where the Adventure series showed you how to stand up and believe in yourself no matter the circumstances and showing you how to "live and learn" from your mistakes? No no, just THROW all that out the window since the older games had bugs and glitches, yep they were nothing but garbage due to the issues they had -__- does anyone realize the older games had actual EFFORT put into them? Even the older shows and movies had more time, effort and care put into them than Prime, Boom and the awful Sonic movies, The only true Sonic Movie was the Sonic OVA and I will fight anyone that says otherwise, the battle between Metal and Sonic, him almost killing Sonic in that movie? No, no, let's not make anything serious like THAT ever again, or anything dark like the SatAm series..even UNDERGROUND was better than everything new we have today If it wasn't for SEGA wanting to have Sonic and Co SING in every episode, Sonic Underground wouldn't have as much hate as it does, it was set in the same universe as SatAm, as proof, King Max's statue was seen getting destroyed at the very beginning of Underground, it was supposed to be connected to SatAm, they both had a darker tone with every animal being turned into a mindless machine with their homes being destroyed, which is funnily enough, what Sonic Prime tried to copy but made it less serious and more "HA HA FUNNY" :/ this series is now a laughing stock, designed purely for mindless babies.. and it didn't used to be this way which is why i get so angry when people hate on the old because the old was BETTER it was what even MADE this series to begin with, we had a actual compelling storyline at one point in time but now? I can't even describe it, this franchise has become Teen Titans Go levels of dumb, where it is PAINFUL to sit down through a single episode of Sonic Prime or Boom without wanting to slam my head into a table..and the movies? Remember when everyone hated Sonic X because Sonic apparently needed the help of a human child despite being able to take down giant monsters and mechs all on his own? Yeah..now we have the stupid version of that! At least Sonic still did things solo in that series and Chris Throndyke didn't CRIPPLE him ..actually Chris was a better character for the fact he gave Sonic and his friends the freedom to come and go as they pleased and didn't TREAT them all like a bunch of babies unlike the guy in the movies *don't remember his name because i hated the movies* and Chris actually made gadgets for Sonic and Co so he wasn't completely useless in the show either, he actually contributed to Sonic and his friends, he wasn't insufferable like the cast in the movies God this franchise has just gone so down hill..
The movies weren't just Sonic acting like a total goofball, for starters he is not the same Sonic that is in the games so of course he is going to have a different character. He learns to be a hero and then helps others like Tails or Knuckles. He isn't just a walking joke, he has character development and is an enjoyable character. He makes mistakes and grows for it like when he almost got Tails killed? In the final battle between Sonic and Doctor Robotnik, Sonic was about to die if he didn't get encouraged by his family to become super and defeat Robotnik. You are clearly just ignoring shit so you can prove your stupid point. Sonics character is way better in the newer movies then in OVA
The Newer Sonic movies didn't need to be taken that seriously because they are based on the classic games. Which didn't really have a dark or complex storyline. That's why the tone will be different for Sonic 3, it's taking inspiration from SA2 so it's going to have a darker storyline. The movies aren't afraid to tackle serious moments. Sonic loses Longclaw who was basically his mother. He is probably one of my favorite Sonics because of how likeable he is. Now not everything he does is something that I enjoy, like when he's flossing or when he makes fart jokes, but I understand why he does it since you know... He's a fucking kid.. Of course he's going to make immature jokes... Either way. Sonic in the newer movies is one of the best interpretations of Sonic because of how they don't just make him a "way past cool but bland character" like in SA1 SA2 and some of the other games. Don't get me wrong I like Sonics character in those games since he is someone to look up too and inspires others to be the best they can be. But having Sonic be the inexperienced teen who is still cool and motivates others but also needs help from time to time. I expect Sonic in the 3rd movie to be more experienced and grown up as well as be closer to the Sonic in the games.
Tom in the movie treated Sonic like if he was his kid. He didn't treat him like a baby. Stop talking about this stupid shit about how everything is becoming dumbed down for babies. You're just a nostalgia blinded geek who can't just accept change. Chris was basically useless. Tails could have done everything Chris could have done like make him gadgets. There was no reason for him to be there. His character sucked and was annoying and had no enjoyment factor. It's funny how you call the new movies dumb and babyish while Sonic X has a character like Chris who was a whiny annoying brat who was only put in to be some type of comical relief for the kids who watched it. Tom in the newer movies actually was important since no one else was there to help Sonic. Without Tom Sonic wouldn't know how to get to his rings. I'm honestly not going to try and argue with the rest of your statements. Your opinion is terrible and extremely biased. Sonic Colors is good, Sonic Superstars is good, the Sonic movies are good. Sonic Heroes, O6 and the storybook games sucked, get over it.
Sonic did things in the Movie. Stop comparing the two as if they're the same Sonic. They aren't, Movie Sonic is way less experienced so it makes sense he needs more help. It doesn't make him bad or anything it's just a different take on Sonic.
