A short video that explains the physics of a speaker and how it relates to the motor effect (Lorentz force)
CORRECTION: A number of comments stated there is only one magnet (not two as stated)
That is true. The ring magnet has a top and bottom polarity, that with the plates (a center plate and a top plate) set up one polarity on the outside and the the other polarity on the inside pole)
So apologies for my error on the magnet itself. However, the explanation of its working is nonetheless correct.

There is a mistake in the video! There is only one magnet!! the top is the Front plate or Front pole. It is a metal plate, not a magnet!! Please correct!

The highest pressure is had when the driver is all the way in, not out, assuming steady state and the acoustic environment being mass like such as free space.

On the motor effect, I’m having a hard time understanding the dynamics between electricity, magnetism, and kinetic energy. First, there is the electromagnetic spectrum. I don’t understand if or where electricity or magnetism appear on the spectrum. Is electromagnetic spectrum different than an electrical spectrum, if there is such a thing? Or is there a magnetic spectrum? I’m not sure what these are. And I’ve heard sound waves, compression waves, are on the electromagnetic spectrum. How can all these things be on the same spectrum and interact with each other to reproduce sound in a speaker or microphone?

How far do the magnets emit a wave or magnetic attraction or detraction from the magnet itself into the outside of the speaker (front and behind). In other words, how far would magnets travel in strength outside the speaker? Does the strength normally dramatically reduce in a short distance? Say like 3 feet? Would it be possible to measure a strong magnetic wave at this distance, or has it lost the significance of its power?

Although I know the biz on speakers, your great vid will make it easier to explain to my grandies when I build them a demo speaker. Then I will get them to build one. My dad was a radtech...some of it rubbed off..lol.

Hello Paul. Very nice, clear instructive video, which I may watch one or two more times to really integrate the information. I am just beginning to learn this kind of thing. I wonder if you might help me with a project I am trying to do? Can you please tell me how to daisy-chain several speakers? Just the naked speaker like you show in the video, not the ones in speaker boxes. I would like to daisy-chain 3 or more 8 Ohm .25 W 57 mm Round speakers, all with North face polarity. The first one would be attached to an output device via its + pole. The device will be a 1 kHz DC supply one. Would this kind of array even work without shorting out or otherwise failing? If yes, should they be set a certain distance apart in order to not interfere with each other? Thanks in advance!

There's something funny about the way the magnet is shown (e.g. at 3'00, 3'40") : it seems to consist of separate north and south poles! All magnets have to have both...I'm now searching for other sources that explain the magnet design more clearly.
@jasonjackson3114
@jasonjackson3114 5 лет назад
You are correct. There is only one magnet in most speakers. The north connected to the front plate. The south or the base of the magnet is connected to the back-plate and pole-piece. The pole-piece is in the centre.
@gamerakib3078
@gamerakib3078 4 года назад
But in my book its opposite. The North is in the middle and South in its both sides.Is it correct 🤔🤔

Thanks for the correction. The idea of expressing as monopole wasn't my intention ( I know they dont exist) but that is how it sounds. I have explained the correction it in the description

Thank you for the video. Why is the magnetic pole 'north' on the inside of the magnet?Are all magnets with a hole in the center this way by nature? What about the other surfaces of the magnet, do they all have a pole?

If you watch this video, it explains the answer to you question very well at about a 45 seconds in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-048tBZMt3eY.html

he explained it wrong the top of the magnet is north and bottom is south and the south is carryed to the center of the cone by the steel plate on the bottom and north is carryed up and closer to the coil by the top plate.

close but a little off you explained it wrong the top of the magnet is north and bottom is south (single pole magnets are rare)and the south is carryed to the center of the coil by the steel plate on the bottom and north is carryed up and closer to the coil by the top plate. nice video though and thanks for sharing

Nice explain... But how is it produced different types of sound like music?????
@PhysicsHigh
@PhysicsHigh 6 лет назад
Music is simply multiple frequencies creating complex waveforms. Since the input is AC but complex like the waveforms the speaker receives, the speaker vibrates with that complex frequency pattern

Correct if the current is unchanging. In a rectified DC supply you will get some vibration

Microphone works due to induction. In this case sound vibration causes wires to move in magnetic field inducing an EMF
