An underappreciated moment in the show is when Shocker inadvertently teaches Spidey about how a man honors his responsibilities. Peter already had the whole "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" motif, but Shocker taught him an important angle; Don't dismiss your responsibilities to those closest to you. Just because you're saving the world, that doesn't mean you should forget YOUR world.

Fully agree personally. Part of what made this show so fun to me was seeing all these background characters gradually turn into the classic Spidey villains and seeing them fleshed out. It also helped play up the fact they were people being the suits, and that was nice. I ESPECIALLY love Brock, because he's introduced as this nice guy who's close friend with Peter, making his gradual descent into hatred for Spider-Man and eventual transformation into Venom all the more shocking by contrast.

I love the gradual build up towards Otto becoming Dr Octopus. It is honestly tragic. Otto was a timid scientist who was forced to help Norman turn criminals into supervillains. He expressed remorse when he believed Flint died and tried to warn Alex about the Rhino suit being permanent. He still had some morality inside him. Even after his transformation, he was considerate enough to warn May to move out of the way and even prevented Rhino from attacking until May and her friend got to safety. In his final moments before his transformation, he meekly said "I've been good". Like a scared little boy who was being punished and he didn't know why.
@tornadochaser2457
@tornadochaser2457 2 года назад
However, another thing I love about Otto is his evolution as the series goes on. When he becomes Dr. Octopus, he feels liberated and is sure of himself regarding his actions. He feels secure that his plans will work due to his high intelligence, now combined with the liberation of his ego and his willingness to take assertive and drastic action. So, when his smartly crafted plans constantly get thwarted by Spider-Man, he gradually starts to become more embittered, selfish, and cruel. He develops a hatred for Spider-Man, and there's a palpable nastiness and an unhinged state to his character as a result. When Spider-Man ruins his hard work and plans in "Shear Strength", at the end, he's fine letting Gwen and Electro die without a second thought. Electro is especially noticeable, considering Otto developed a father figure relationship with him, and Electro himself, feels nurtured and cared for by Otto. Suitably, just like in the comics, I'd say The Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Venom are Spider-Man's archenemies in the series. An argument can be made for Tombstone, who is taking the place of Kingpin due to rights issues. While Venom actually thrives on his hatred for Spider-Man, as it's in his very nature, and The Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) is cool, calm, and collected by nature, always strategizing coldly and logically to play the game of crime, and just life period, in a smart way, Doc Ock hates Spider-Man as he is extremely frustrated by him. With Tombstone, he is also noticeably cool, calm, and collected by nature, though certainly not as ambitious and driven as Norman, and there is a palpable sense of decency to his character as well, as opposed to Norman's ruthlessness. There's a respect for Spider-Man with him, but he's also firmly a villain, and will do what he deems needs to be done to thrive best in the criminal underworld.
@GamerSlyRatchet1
@GamerSlyRatchet1 2 года назад
I also liked that hints of his own darkness seeped in here and there, like his fantasy about attacking Norman just before the incident, or the way he was almost proud when talking about the features of the Rhino suit.

It seems the show also took some inspiration from the Ultimate Comics - Peter and Eddie being old friends because their parents worked together, as well as both their sets of parents dying in a plane crash - Getting the symbiote in a lab where Eddie worked - Modernizing Peter's photography by incorporating emails - Peter having a scrawnier build - Peter trying out for football is similar to the comics when he first used his powers to get on the basketball team (until Uncle Ben died) - Electro seemingly being "made of" electricity (or just generating so much that it looks like he's pure energy - Even their original plans to include characters like the X-Men is reminiscent to how often Peter interacted with them in the Ultimate Comics - Thombstone reflecting Kingpin is reminiscent to how in those comics, Kingpin was one of the first villains Spider-man dealt with, and on their first encounter, Spider-man gets layed out because he underestimated Thombstone/Kingpin and overestimated himself

Introducing a plethora of characters in the background as normal people only for them to “debut” as villains in their own episodes happens so much in the series that they even were setting up future villains for a potential third season: Cletus Kassidy (Carnage) in the rehabilitation center, Roderick Kingsley (Hobgoblin) during the gang wars, Morris Bench (Hydro-Man) when attempting to defuse the bomb set off by Master Planner, and Mac Gargan (Scorpion) was mentioned in the final episode. All of these characters would’ve likely appeared and become their alter egos in the following season.

I'd actually like you to do an exploration of the character of Rhino, from his start to his last appearance, and how the show handled him with more respect than he tends to get in the comics. In most other media, Rhino has become something of a one-note thug character that Spidey takes down with relative ease, but SSM made him a powerful menace in his first appearance, and even after that, the closest he comes to being treated as a joke is one scene where he's tricked into walking on thin ice. And he later gets to pull one over on Spidey in "Accomplices."

My suggestion is the theme of how much organized crime factors into this Spidey show. Norman was threatened by the mob and then became a mob boss himself (a crazy one who wasted military grade weaponry on gangbangers…but still). Even the formation of the Sinister Six was the beginning of Octavius cornering the supervillain market and becoming the mob boss known as the Master Planner. Another theme that doesn’t get talked about much is Peter’s life being separate from his Spider-Man one. I don’t think any adaptations since spectacular found a way to balance it. With the Peter specific part of Spider-Man being almost nonexistent in every thing afterward (with all his friends either gaining powers too, or being too involved as civilians when it comes to super-heroics)

It was crazy how it managed to be speedy, but never tripping over itself with its swift pacing. Electro shows up to terrorize Connors, and inadvertently causes the lizard serum to become supercharged, making it go from a previously ineffective shot to actually restoring the doctor's arm, and setting on the course of his mutation into the lizard. They could have had it just be an entire episode in and of itself, with Connors trying to crack the formula for regrowing his arm, and then going right into the lizard transformation, instead, it was given a boost from a completely unrelated and unintentional bit of help from someone who was seeking to do anything but help Connors.

The thing I loved most about Spectacular Spider-Man was how connected Eddie was to Peter Parker I know this is basically an adaptation of Eddie's ultimate character but how it was handled set up such a close brotherly connection it wouldn't have been a difficult jump to turn him into an antihero in season 3. Which I believe the creators said was at least partially going to be adapted in a Maximum Carnage storyline they had been planning on developing. What I would really love to see is an introspective into Eddie's character arc and development in this series that haven't been done before and is personally my favorite interpretation of the character

The show is cause and effect entirely, there's never an action without a reaction, by creating characters they created the plot, by creating the settings they created the characters, there's no wasted movement. They came in with a question and when it wouldn't answer itself they didn't scrap it, rather they tweaked the character so that their actions would answer it, even if it's just by meeting another character that forces them to action because they want to do something the other doesn't. It's so simple yet by always looking at cause and effect it created depth, it created more, and probably would be on season 12 by now with minimal wear because of the emphasis on causation. I hope more shows adopt this, asking what would happen if we created x world, what would grow there, and what do they do. By doing that, you've got everything needed to make a great show, no matter the length.

The Sinister Six episode also has this subtle untold worldbuilding that works brilliantly in that the villains actively found ways to counter their first defeat. Doc Ock was beaten by exploiting the tentacles’ battery, so he got a more reliable source in Electro. Electro was beaten by zapping himself in water, so he taught himself to keep it together when wet. Sandman was beaten by exploiting his sand biology, so he made sure to stay out of the water that was dissolving him. Vulture was beaten by getting his glider smashed, so he reinforced it. Rhino got tricked into exhausting himself in a tunnel, so he stayed away from the sewers. Shocker was beaten by recklessly blasting his surroundings, so he made sure to keep track of his teammates throughout the fights (like when he warned Vulture to move). Hell, there’s even the foreshadowing of the Symbiote’s weakness when it briefly gets disrupted while holding Shocker’s gauntlet, a blink and you miss it moment that isn’t even brought to attention.

The best thing about this show is how amazing the world building is and how great the characters are written, especially the effort it is put in fleshing it all out. Peter goes up the rung fighting street crooks to gangsters to super powered maniacs and how the city's criminal element changes. He also learns with each fight and improves with each fight. Not to mention, he needed an upgrade through the symbiote to fight against the sinexter six for the first time. Speaking of the characters....jeez. This show taps into the vast insane cast of Spidey's supporting characters from the comics and has some deep pulls and creates a couple of OCs as well. None of this feels soap opera ish or too dramatic. While each character is introduced as the template-flash being the bully and Mary Jane being the amazing girl next door....they do go deeper with exploring them beyond. And this entire show is character driven, with how peter and his choices affecting not just affecting his own life, but the lives of those around him. This show wins based on the way it understands the biggest factor that has always driven spider-man:his constant dilemma between his choices, the one he has to make between personal life and the responsibility of the great power he inherited. Then again....that's what you get from Greg freaking Weisman.

I like to think that Spectacular Spider-Man was also working towards team-ups with other heroes, as were the other series in the Yostverse. If the series were to get a third season, I would say they probably would be working towards a team-up with the X-Men at some point, and it would at point a bit earlier than the start of Wolverine and the X-Men but also setting up pieces of what we would see in the early part of that series, and the establishment of the groundwork for a mentor-mentee relationship between Beast and Spider-Man, maybe even some bits where Peter learns Hanks real name and Hank lightheartedly says to Peter in his Spider-Man persona that he might be willing to share the secret of his identity with them someday with Peter saying he's not so sure about that. In a way, the series would touch on what the prior 1990s series hinted at while establishing an avenue for future storytelling paths. There have been some storylines in the comics where Peter was part of other superhero teams for some period of time, we got a few shades of this in a few episodes of EMH that featured Spider-Man, but Spider-Man has also been part of Fantastic Four and X-Men teams in some past comics. And because of how Spectacular Spider-Man is structured with its economics, Peter might even be willing to sign up with the Xavier Institute because he'll see it as a way of both opening avenues of possible future income and lessening the financial burden on his family, maybe even having the bulk of his income while at institute going to Aunt May. And in those same storylines, the series can set up a future appearance by Peter as Spider-Man in Wolverine and the X-Men when the series makes are return. They can even handwave away why Peter/Spider-Man was never mentioned because of other concerns and not wanting to inadvertently getting him and his family dragged into the problems the X-Men see as theirs to deal with, so avoiding even mentioning him would help in taking things along that way. In quite a few Spider-Man stories, comics, and otherwise, it's implied (and sometimes openly stated) that Spider-Man might be a mutant. When Spectacular Spider-Man was still airing, my brother and I would joke about how both Peter and Gwen would cause partial blips on Cerebro, seeing how Peter's mutant gene was partially activated by the accident that gave him his powers and Gwen's "the look" could be her expressing some sort of conscious control over her own mutant gene for a brief period of time. Mind you, that was all fan theory work by two nerds that watched the shows, but it isn't without merit and could further help with the connectedness in worldbuilding between series.

Greg Weisman and Victor Cook actually had their own plans for the X-Men and other Marvel heroes (starting with a Human Torch team-up), but they couldn't do them because they weren't allowed to since Sony only had the rights to Spider-Man and Ghost Rider characters. Also the reason why I don't consider it part of the "Yostverse".

I think the main thing that sets this show apart from the 90s cartoon is that it's way less campy in comparison. The 90s cartoon was made with that specific "super child friendly" vibe with words like destroy, eliminate, and defeat instead of just saying kill despite the plots often being pretty deep and mature. The pacing of the episodes in SSM is also way better too. I prefer the 90s show solely because of how many stories it tells and it's Artstyle but you have to acknowledge the fact that if SSM got like 5 seasons it would easily be one of the greatest cartoon shows ever made. I'd say on par with BTAS. All this comes from the biggest BTAS fan ever.

I think a trait like this is especially powerful for media today with all out short attention spans. It's a difficult line to balance potentially more boring set up and satisfying payoff, with one usually relying on the other. Being able to maximize the efficiency of it all by intertwining these stories is a genius way to condense entertainment to have better bang for your buck and should be a model for people looking to make adaptations of large source materials in general

Seriously, I watched this show for the first time and I loved how every single moment was significant and always hit hard, when Eddie turns into Venom thinking Peter was a backstabber, it hurts, you feel it, when Otto pleads to not be taken by the arms again, you genuinely feel the desperation in his plea, that’s what makes this show so engaging and emotionally gripping, and it still only got 2 short seasons to do so.

I really adore Spectacular Spider-Man in how it can balance episodic nature while having connected plotline with great set ups. Something I really hate in Invincible is how it spoils one of the twists from get go, ruining built up it had prior in the comic and just overshadows any other episodic plotlines (most of which happened before and after Nolan first plotline was resolved) and it feels like drag because it lacks development up until final moments. Arcane is masterful in storytelling, yet still has similar issue of not fully developing stuff in Echo connection to Jinx and Jayce bond with his mother, which feels weird when other stuff was done well. I think "full plot, no filler" gets really hard right now and while I'm all for having shorter shows with tight plotlines, their oversaturation and some issues arising when you try to cut all side stuff is worrying. Something like "The Puppetmaster" from Avatar and school arcs in MHA, and Spectacular Spider-man Molten Man episode are great as complete stories of themselves with no need of everything being tie in to main plot, yet being great place for making support cast and themes be better for it, allowing writers to add something beyond main conflict and expand universe in fun ways.

I mean spoiling one of the twists from the get go was honestly the best call for Invincible. When it came to the actual comics, before Issue 8 dropped, interest was steadily declining as people thought "this is just a normal superhero story, but the issues are kinda just getting neatly resolved, there's not much conflict". So much so that Kirkman thought the story would only get to the end of the first arc, and that would be it. But the sudden interest of issue 8 brought everyone and more back on. With a show in this dsy and age, there was ppenty of people losing interest in invincible nearing the end of it's first episode, so they needed that hook. And honestly, i think it does it better in the show, speaking as someone who adores the comics as one of my favorite comic books of all time

I think what made this show really special is how they used the early spidey comics as somewhat of a base, and filled in certain gaps with stuff taken from different sources. Not just for the sake of using those sources but they knew exactly what parts to take to help their story. Oh, we wanna use Eddie but Peter didn’t meet him until much later in the comics? Let’s take the Ultimate comics route and establish him as Peter’s childhood friend. Or like how they made Peter’s origin almost exactly how it was in the Raimi trilogy. It’s great how they even do that for the little stuff too, like having MJ recite her iconic “Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot” line from the 1994 animated series, or having Sally Avril reject Peter in the first episode, just like she did in the very first comic Spidey appeared in (Amazing Fantasy #15). They didn’t just honor their source material, they made the material work FOR THEM, and that’s why the show is as spectacular as its title suggests.

I recently got the series as a birthday gift to myself and i loved every second, best $20 i spent. When seeing these characters in the background it was setting up so much that by the time their transformations hit it had already set up all the flags it needed. I think this show has my favorite green goblin out of the adaptations I've seen, being equal parts funny and scarily threatening. Not to mention i Love the idea of Ben being in Peters head during the symbiote stuff... Both from the perspective that Peter still thinks back on him when needing help, and as an idea that Ben is a person that meant so much to Peter and is so ingrained into Spider-man's origin that even the Symbiote cannot corrupt Peters thoughts of him. A perfect choice to represent Peters good side trying to drive out the Symbiote. (P.S) on a smaller note, i love spider suits that have the classic underarm webbing and the webbing looks so good in the shows art style

I'll keep myself short to not be annoying, but to answer your question posed at the end, 100% Venom. I know one could argue he is an adaptation of the Ultimate Spider-Man version of the character, but I'd say there are enough differences to distinguish him as an entirely unique take. The way he builds resentment towards peter over the course of the show is well handled. Idk, I like him. Even if I don't ever see him going the Anti Hero route. But that's okay because this time I do actually for once see him having a couple reasons to hate Peter. (Even if you could argue that him finding out that Peter is Spider-Man should technically redeem a lot of "Peter's shitty behaviour". Anyway. Other mention I most importantly wanted to make is that I think this take on the Green Goblin is fantastic, however not as a standalone but as a complementary piece to the comics/movies. Everyone already knows the Goblin's identity. So I love how the show makes it a point to keep the viewer guessing on who it actually is this time around. Norman or Harry.

It was honestly the best Spider-Man Cartoon. I’d say even better than the 90s series which was amazing. The Venom arc was amazing. Having the best Eddie Brock incarnation that really made it personal for Peter. It’s really where “We are Venom” came from. “For now on we’re poison to Peter Parker and Spider-Man. We’re VENOM!” Great origins for the villains too. Sandman and Rhino starting out as regular crooks. The evolution of a nervous Otto into the confident Doctor Octopus. And Tombstone was a surprise, when I heard “big man” and I thought for sure it was Kingpin. Also, holy crap was it h*rny. I went back as an adult and I was getting hot under the collar. Especially with Black Cat, who also was one of the best incarnations. Pete was a harem protagonist. And it’s a shame we never got to see the conclusion. I guess Gwen was gonna die like in the comics and he’d marry MJ. That’s what I heard anyway. But he had Gwen, Liz, Mary Jane, Felicia, and even Sally seemed to be getting the hots for him.
