For example, during the opening Sierra Logo, the visual sparkle effect is triggered by cues built into the fanfare MIDI track, which is why the tinkle sound effect & visual sparkle effect are so well synchronized. Often times, when there is silence on lesser sound devices like PC Speaker or AdLib (where there would normally be sound on the MT-32), the lesser devices are still technically playing MIDI, it’s just a silent track inside the same MIDI file. If the MT-32 is playing a 1:56 long track of ambient wind and rain effects, the PC Speaker is playing 1:56 of ambient silence. The game is still referencing a point in time in that MIDI file, even if you can’t audibly hear anything. That’s why disabling sound probably won’t work without outright file replacement."

I probably have more hours in SQIV than any other game. One of my favorite games of all time. The Space Quest Historian and OneShortEye together on a SQIV video? I’m fucking done. I’m in heaven. Edit: Wait… *you* had the record with the TAS only strat? 👌 This video turned out even better than I anticipated.

So many OOB glitches in super computer section of the game seems to me like symptoms of a game rushed to market. Next thing i'd expect is a glitch to get past the lasers without using the keypad

According to the developers, it's really hard to program a game in that engine without some OOB glitches. And some of those OOBs require setup that the QA testers wouldn't have ever considered. I'm mostly curious what spaghetti code powers their collision detection.

Watching a video from 1996ish of my older brother (I’m 34 he’s 40) playing this game on old computer the beggar comes instantly but I do not know why. Are people in meta still stuck waiting on beggar? I’m not sure why in the home video but the beggar is on the road when he enters the road scene the first time so there’s some unknown reason on older pc it doesn’t make you wait. The video is on vhs home video I could eventually upload it somehow and show it but again I don’t know what we did for make it insane I was 9 and he was like 15 in 1999

If you play this game on original hardware, does the Floppy version OOB clip work? If not, playing in DOSbox should be disallowed.

It would, yes. DOSBox simply emulates a DOS environment. It doesn't change the game engine or any of the game scripts. Though, to play devil's advocate, none of us own original hardware. (Well, maybe a few, but for the most part, no.) It's difficult to acquire, maintain, and capture video from. People with faster CPUs would have a hardware advantage. (DOSBox allows you to dial in the cycles.) So even if DOSBox differed in some way, I don't see why that would matter. What matters is whether it can be consistent for everyone.

"They wouldn't disable sound as that'd probably be too much" Those same runners: "hehe cycles go brrrrrrrrr If they're already speeding up the system, making the game effectively run faster than it was intended (be honest, the devs did not intend the game to run that fast, they aimed for middle of the road hardware) then restrictions on anything else is out the window. I always believed those who set up dos game categories always were too sloppy with the cycles restrictions. Just because some systems were that fast, didn't mean those were the target. All because they tied logic to framerate, rather than timing it to actual seconds. Even some modern pc games do the same, and what are the restrictions on those runs usually? 60fps lock usually, aiming to keep the game running as intended, rather than setting the restriction to something like 120, running the games faster than they were meant to.

There are some games (both adventure and non-adventure) that do mandate DOSBox at fixed cycles. The problem with this (apart from it being slower) is that, surprisingly and unfortunately, the game won't run the same for everybody. In most cases the difference is within a reasonable 1-3% range (assuming identical configs which is not always safe), but there have been a couple cases where a runner's game ran a good 25% faster than anyone else's (and no, they were not cheating). And even a 1% performance difference can be very significant depending on what the run is like. Granted, max cycles isn't necessarily a level playing field either, since some players' computers have more oomph and a higher max; but the differences are mostly minor (minor enough that the SQ4 world record was set on an awful piece of outdated machinery with hardware issues). Many adventure games are run at high but non-max cycles, which is an even more level playing field (although it's not done for equality - non-max is just optimal for speed in those games).

I *love* the idea of "Santa Claus" being _the_ Santa Claus, flying around the World on his sleigh Dec 24 delivering toys and getting all impatient, "Ugh, this is taking too long... I have to get back to speedrunning my retro adventure games! That's *all I do* for the rest of the year! Swimfan is probably pulling ahead of me right as we speak!" I mean, it makes sense - Santa is the *ultimate* speedrunner in real-life, I suppose. You don't see the Easter Bunny running around the World in one night, after all. He must boundary break through whole countries on Christmas Eve! 😄
