Man I used to play this game all the time with my dad when I was a kid. I haven't thought about those days in a long time. Thank you for reminding me of better days as well as informative content.
Glad to see many other people have also played this with their dads. If I might ask is your dad a Zelda fan because I feel like that tends to be the common connection between this LOL
@@youhaveayds8975 All I can say is my dad gave me a Gameboy game and said "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this." My first game just happened to be Zelda. Second one was Castlevania.
this was actually a game i considered picking up for speed running years ago because ive always been enamored at the thought of running something that has a pretty small community, though i never got around to it
You should! The original Tak trilogy has a small but great speedrun community in fact Tak 3 was built for speedrunning (Tak the Great Juju Challenge) you should give them a try!
Great video. I’ve been apart of the Tak speedrunning scene for a long time and it’s great to see this game get some coverage, considering how little this franchise is talked about, led alone its speedruns. I’ve primarily ran the 3rd game in the series (The Great Juju Challenge) and its a low key really good speedrun. It’s more linear than Tak 1 but it is fast paced and filled to the brim with numerous exploits and big skips. I would definitely recommend checking out the run if you haven’t already, as well as the runs for the other Tak games.
You did a good job for sure. The route has changed a ton over the years and you definitely did a strong job explaining the new route which I wasn't even that familiar with. The whole Tak community highly enjoyed this video.
I couldn’t get past the chicken leading tower as a kid then accidentally saved after I found that Easter Egg cave on the island, which left me softlocked forever more.
I ruined a save file and softlocked myself out of completion in the area at 13:30 because a monkey got stuck between trees. I think it was because I got impatient or bored and shot it while it was traveling between trees, and so it just started looping its running animation while standing in place. I left the level and came back, hoping that would fix it, but found out that bafflingly, the game had saved the monkey's precise position, rather than what tree it was supposed to be standing next to. After seeing the throw hover trick, maybe I'll return to my save file and try to complete it after all.
I did something similar, I got 2 monkeys perpetually throwing coconuts at each other, and it reached the point where they both had so many throws queued up that they machine gunned me down as soon as I tried to pass and killed me in less than a second, then went straight back to attacking each other. This game precisely saves a weirdly massive number of object states, that's probably why a save file takes up so much memory card space.
@@skoottietv I have a strong nostalgic connection to this game, but I don't think I actually put much playtime into it & I haven't re-played it since. I don't really remember the layout of any of the levels, and that's normally something I am extremely good at remembering with most games. But I vividly remember the way I felt while playing it. It was powerful, deeply immersive, created a rich vibe that was unlike anything else I played Something about the soundtrack, the vibes, the FEEL of this game was powerful for my impressionable young brain my memories are super fuzzy, i couldn't really speak to the objective quality of the game as a 3D platformer I want to say kid me got stuck in a lot of different places - and I was usually pretty good at this kind of game but in a way that only further contributes to the particular way i feel about this game, the sense of wonder it created
I have only ever played Tak and the Staff of Dreams and Tak and the Great Juju Challenge. I didn't appreciate the fact that TatSoD just continues the plot straight over from this game. That's awesome! I also love seeing some of the Jujus I remember from my childhood (mostly the green girl and the bones guy) in this game. I need to play this.
I don't really know anything about GJC, but I know that SoD was much more linear than the first game & much more rushed in development. The original game is a proper open 3D platformer where you have to explore and discover stuff, and new pathways will open up in old levels. It was a great game to play as a kid, the weirdness and vibes were super immersive and made an impact on my impressionable young brain i don't remember the gameplay so much as i remember the powerful feelings i had while playing it just, captivated by the world and exploration and vibes, some weird sense of wonder mixed with danger and fear that I probably wouldn't be able to feel towards a game today. I don't remember another game that nailed that feeling as consistently as Tak 1 did for me. I probably would have HATED Tak 2 if I played it shortly after the first.
@@DELTARYZ I had Tak 2 growing up, and didn't play the first Tak til after I played Tak 3, and I cannot go back to the first game, to me the sequels are just so much better. Don't get me wrong, Tak 1 has an awesome artstyle and great music, but the gameplay in the sequels is just so fun that it's hard to return to the OG for me.
I had no idea this franchise started as a video game. All I remembered of it was that weird cartoon based off of it on Nick that heavily disturbed me as a child. Looks like a fun game though. Hopefully more people pick it up and run it.
The show was... awful, uncomfortable, uncanny, just an absolute fever dream that is an insult to the game it's inspired by. The original game, on the other hand, left a significant impact on my impressionable young brain. There's something about the way its exploration and backtracking works, the vibes and sense of wonder it created the soundtrack and weird visuals were just so deeply immersive and unlike anything else i played I don't even remember the mechanics or levels particularly vividly, just... the way I felt while playing it. I worry that re-playing it now might spoil its magic, maybe this is just rose-tinted glasses, but I usually seem to agree with kid me's opinions & it definitely inspired some pretty powerful feelings inside me so I definitely wish it got more attention than it does.
I found this channel today while in sick bed and was very delighted to see the relatively low video count. Now, after having watched them all, I can safely say this channel is in my top Comfort channels. There are no loud sounds, no screaming, a calm voice speaking with just enough happpening to keep me from losing intrest. Absolutely outstanding! I can not wait to see what more you bring to the table
THQNordic promised fans a remake of the original trilogy Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge in 2018! Fans need to get louder so the remake can happen! THQNordic it needs to happen! :)
@@Im-BAD-at-satire it wasn’t based on the original video game trilogy different universe lore and even voice actors, the show is what killed Tak’s incredible legacy! Remember Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge and forget the tv shows existence
SRE originally had you throw hover aaalll the way up. The tiki skip for Numa Dunes can also crash the game if performed wrong. Yeah, I'm presuming you meant the Moonstone in Mt. Top North, Dark Temple is the final boss area. Since its not brought up, mana conservation is important because Crazy Feet costs 1 mana per second of use. Crazy Feet make go fast. More go fast means more mana use. Finally, it's "tul-ay-loc" not "tay-loc." It is a pretty hard name to be fair, that's why the show changed it.
Wow, thanks for making this! Really cool to see some appreciation for this very strange speedgame 😄That midwest speedfest shoutout gave me some whiplash for sure haha
@@skoottietv Yeah it's a great video, surprisingly well researched given how small the community is and how sparse the information is probably spread around haha. Almost makes me want to pick the game back up and work towards breaking the 1 hour barrier 😄
As an outsider just getting recommended this video, I find it once again insane how well this community can work to put together these strategies and find these tiny glitches. Just that tutorial skip alone for an obscure older game like this, its one of those questions of "How long did this take to figure out, and also happen to be the right guy to report it!?"
As a member of the Tak trilogy community I can definitely say that Tak 1 especially has a lot of underrated speedrunning tricks! I hope someone gets the 59 because more people need to see this speedrun it’s amazing to see live!
The original Tak trilogy is some of the best 3D platformers ever made in my opinion they have amazing gameplay stories music characters writing and voice acting and personality! I’m glad skootie gave the small Tak speedrun community some spotlight! :)
Wow this is an awesome well done video. I enjoyed the fun edits, and the explanation was quick yet entertaining. Plus I haven't seen Tak anything in a long while. Well done dude
11:37;17:31 That Spirit World glitch is interesting. When I played this game as a kid I was young and dumb. Somehow I had issues beating the big armored Nerbils trying to get Loc as a Balloon. Then out of nowhere the pillars appeared and I could get Loc's balloon even though I didn't beat the big Nerbils. I wonder if this is why.
Wouldn't call this the strangest, though definitely one of the wackiest. And it's cool to see more coverage on this game, too. I do love the art and atmosphere of a number of locations. Music is a big part of that, so: to anyone reading this, i VERY much recommend checking out the OST to all three games (this one, Staff of Dreams and Great Juju Challenge. Though 1 and 2 more than 3.) There's another 3D platformer-style game out there that speedrunners seem to be decently fond of, by name of Kya: Dark Lineage. Would love to see that one get more coverage as well. And simply for more players to experience it. It does a lot and does it quite well, such as skydiving, wind riding, board sliding, animal riding, and rather in-depth 3D combat that i've heard people say is akin to Tekken. It's not the most *mechanically* robust, and i think that's part of why speedrunners like it. Still, i'd say it's a fun time that would benefit from a second chance to do more with its potential.
The first three Tak games Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge actually has a pretty big community not as big as SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom but still, more people need to play the original three Tak games they deserve to be remembered because they’re amazing 3D platformers
Great job explaining how the Tak speedrun works! This IP was always underrated and it's a shame. They made this a game as well as a show, I remember Nick kept advertising the show and they really wanted this to be the big new IP, they must've invested a lot of money into making the show. The show looked great on a technical level because it used 3D animation but in a time where the graphics looked nicer compared to the original 3D shows like Reboot (Tak had some really interesting character designs), but I remember the plot of the show being bland. The game was a fun platformer though, I enjoyed playing weird games like this and Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, an even stranger platformer if you can believe it or not.
The show was actually meant to start airing around the same time as the first game and be a more direct tie-in to the games' story, but it got stuck in development hell and didn't release until it had largely fallen out of relevancy and barely had anything to do with the actual games.
Give the original three Tak games a try! Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge are fantastic games! They have amazing gameplay stories music characters writing and voice acting! I’m hoping THQNordic fulfills there promise of a remade trilogy because more people need to play these incredible games!
My dad has been holding on to an original Xbox since before I was born. I grew up on this console and still played all the way up to 2020. Tak: The Great Juju Challenge was the only Tak game I ever played, but it was a lot of fun. Also, I don’t think I ever finished the game. I got stuck at the last arena part.
I never got to play the first Tak game, but heard of it. Instead my first Tak game was Tak 2 Staff of Dreams, and I loved that game even though nowadays it feels like a fever dream just thinking about the story... Don't know about y'all but Patrick Warburton (VA for Lok) has been one of the most influential VA's for me. Great video, and keep up the good work!
The only thing about this game I remember is playing a demo where you jump on a fat bear's tummy as a trampoline, and it exaggerated the bouncing to an almost glitchy degree. That and this was a Nick show too.
Your thinking of the sequel Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams an amazing game! And forget the tv shows existence lol it’s what ruined Tak’s incredible video game legacy there were three amazing games and nothing else lol Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge are the ones that count in fans eyes
Me and my family would play this and it’s sequels together a lot back then. This is one of my favorite games glad to see a video on it that is this recent.
Weird fact, in tak and the great juju challenge. Use of a turbo controller makes combat a bit interesting to see thanks to the vibrant colors of tak’s tonfa. Plus it’s hard to play in multiplayer because of how the game does split screen
Wanted to drop this flex here just cuz I was so proud of it. When I had this game, my Z button was broken on my gamecube. I just decided to play it anyway and ended up beating the game without it. If I rmr correctly, Z was the button for some juju powers (it's been 20 years so idfk), so I ended up never really jujuing. I just Takd
Yes the game came way before the show and the show has nothing to do with the game, different universe lore and even voice actors! The original Tak trilogy the video game trilogy is what fans say is the only thing that counts! Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge their amazing video games! While the show ruined Tak’s incredible video game legacy!
haven't though about Tak since they did that nickelodeon show for a couple seasons. this was one of the first video games i actually have distinct memories of playing as a kid but listening to the plot rundown in this format makes me realize why it wasn't a very popular game LOL
Actually the original Tak trilogy was very popular series Tak 2 won the best GameCube platformers award in 2004 and Tak 3 the Great Juju Challenge was up for best action adventure game of 2005! The show ruined Tak’s incredible video game legacy because it was totally different from the games different lore universe and voice actors! Remember the original games and forget the tv show
Been playing the original Tak trilogy since launch day in 2003 and since then I got to talk with the creator of Tak and this trilogy of Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge deserves a remake because when I got to talk to him I can tell so much effort went into Tak it’s insane!
I once found this strange behavior in Tak 2 with the frogs at the swamp level. There was a way you could stun the frog and push it into the water and the frog could start spinning in place. You could hop on the frog and then spam spin attacks on the frog which would move you along in the water. I used this trick to speed through a section of the swamp, I wonder how the tak 2 speed run community is this trick has probably been found already lol
Yes a even bigger skip is used, the Tak trilogy is really fun to speed run especially Tak 3 on GameCube because that game was built for speedrunning the Tak trilogy community may be small but it’s a fun thing to be a part of! :)
@@rochoe4575 I know that’s the thing with Painbow to inconsistence unfortunately great player but we need a runner that will take the game to a new level
I never played this game, but I vividly remember seeing a certain ad for it as a kid repeatedly before a certain movie. (Can't remember which one, but internet will help probably)
Absolutely howling because holy shit I was convinced i was the only person who remembered this game. I loved it to pieces despite never getting very far... Well now i wanna boot up my old ps2 and go to town...
You should try playing all three games in the original trilogy! Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge! Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams might be more your speed because it’s a traditional level based platformer :)
Tak was the first Nickelodeon game character the trilogy’s debut was in 2003 a year later we got a sequel Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and finally we got Tak 3 in 2005. The Tak from the Nicktoons game wasn’t the original Tak unfortunately different universe lore and voice actor, you should try playing the original trilogy on GameCube or PS2 :)
bro the chicken temple kicked my ass for two hours straight 💀 i'm amazed at how a kids platformer contains one of the hardest levels i've ever played in a game
The Tak trilogy is amazing, Tak and the Power of Juju, Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge are by far the most underrated 3D platformers ever made! For someone who speed runs the trilogy on his free time I can say is Tak is easy to learn difficult to master! :)
Still one of the nichest game I've played, not only because of it being a rarely talked about game, but because I got it from a relative for a while because his GameCube didn't work, only had it as a kid for a while, yeah, probably, I think that was the case
Yes! The original trilogy was a video game first! Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge! The original trilogy has nothing to do with the show however different universe lore and even voice actors! Forget the tv show lol but you should play the original games! They have amazing gameplay stories music characters writing and voice acting and personality! Jason Marsden as Tak and Patrick Warburton as Lok are comedic gold! :)
The original Tak trilogy has nothing to do with the tv show different universe lore and even voice actors sadly the show is what ruined Tak’s incredible video game legacy unfortunately
Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge was my childhood too! THQNordic actually promised fans a remake of the trilogy let’s hope we get an official announcement soon! Because the original Tak trilogy needs to be on all modern platforms there so good! :)
It's already been 20 years now and I still hate everything about Tak from its name to design. Nickelodeon didn't make it better when it had its own cartoon.
"Strangest platformer ever made" is pretty accurate - this game is *WEIRD.* And yet, somehow, it's actually pretty decent. Never would've imagined you could skip so much though! Speedrunners never cease to amaze me.
Tak 1 wasn’t on the original Xbox you’re probably thinking of Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams or Tak 3 the Great Juju Challenge I would know because I collect stuff from the original Tak trilogy
Remember the original games and forget the show lol the show is what ruined the franchise different universe lore and even voice actors but you should play Tak and the Power of Juju Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge some of the best 3D platformers ever made in my opinion amazing gameplay stories music characters writing and voice acting and personality!
