Hi Dyllen! Thank you for talking about grind culture, which is seen especially at the “big” universities. At USC, I seen a lot of what you mentioned (I’m an engineering student too) and because there is so much to do, sometimes class takes up such a great chunk because you are actively trying to understand what it is your learning, but then it leaves such small room, if any, to explore other learning opportunities such as taking in a work study job, joining a number of clubs, or trying to self-learn new skills to expand resume, etc. For me, it had to come to a point where I had to drop a core math class, and as math is key to your course plan, it suddenly feels as if you are a failure or you begin doubting whether engineering is even for you. No matter how hard you work or how much you truly love your major (compared to others who may be more influenced by money than actual enjoyment) it still doesn’t work. Just like you, I went from 18 units to 14, and realized that I had to drop that math class to realize that it is okay to take it in the summer. It is okay to shift your course plan around. It is okay! It taught me that college, after all, teaches a theoretical side of engineering, but what will truly matter is your understanding and your ability to apply what you know to your workplace. Walks, I relate with you on that one! Healthy habits and doing just the right amount of things that YOU can balance, is something that should not leave our minds. I can see your love in what you do (I bought your course in 2020), and appreciate you calling attention to the issues that can lead up when you get dragged by the majority. Exactly, it's totally okay to do what is best for YOU! Needing to take a smaller course load or take more time to rest does NOT mean you are less capable. Practicing self-care is ADMIRABLE!
Congrats on Stanford! I think it's pretty universal to many colleges, but especially places like Stanford where students are used to working so much and overcommitting themselves.
