STP has always used such deceptively complex chord progressions in their music, hauntingly beautiful. RIP Scott, you are missed.

That’s true. Their debut single plush has weird chords and key changes. That was pretty much unheard of in mainstream modern rock at the time. I always felt like they were coming from more of a Zeppelin vocabulary than grunge

Rob Deleo wrote some sick, melodic bass lines. He was the secret weapon of that band. Kretz never rushed tempo. Quite the contrary. What a pocket he laid!! Some of Dean's solos were otherworldly with crazy bending and he never played just run of the mill licks. He got more and more tasteful with each record. Their music grew and changed so much from album to album. True artists. Can only imagine how fulfilling it must have felt with the vocal melody and lyric on top. What a band!!!

This album was labasted by the critics, which I don't think was fair. I never heard the supposed Pearl Jam sound-alike quality of their sound; Pearl Jam and STP never once sounded similar to me, from song composition and chord selection to production, they didn't sound similar at all, at least not to my ears. Pearl Jam were very much a blues rock band, whereas STP is obviously a jazz rock band; PJ were pretty straightforward in their arrangements and sound, whereas STP had a heavily layered sound. I always felt STP were one of those bands underrated by those who only gave their music a brief listen.

Weiland and Vedder both had those distinct baritone voices. I always thought that Scott enunciated better than Eddie, which turned me off of PJ. What's the point of words if you can't understand them? Scott was finding his voice on the first album. He emulated Vedder and reminded me of Cobain, and finally just did his own thing. I did love his lounge lizard crooning, though. Weiland could sing any style and any era. The any style/any era label could work for them as a band, as well.

It’s only because Plush was their breakout song and everyone thought it was new PJ because of Scott’s vocals until they saw the video. I was guilty of it myself as a 14 year old. But he hd a much much better range than Vedder. He spoke many times about how singing in the choir growing up helped him. He was truly great.

STP was the best band of the 90’s. PERIOD. I was covering their songs on drums with bands in D/FW as they were coming out. There is only one song by them I hope I never play again… Plush 😂. Not because it’s a bad song but because I’ve played it several hundred times live. It is ALWAYS in the set list! Based on that alone, it’s probably their most famous song. My favorite though is Still Remains. Cheers Rick! Great video as always.

The bass parts in any STP song are also amazingly underrated. Plush was the first ever song I learned on bass. Took me forever, and I learned so much. Learning to play anything on strings from an STP song is always going to yield even some of the most savvy, some great progressions and at the very least, respect for the people who composed these gems.

This band were so underrated. In the UK the only time I got to see US bands videos was either on Alternative Nation or Head Bangers Ball, or the Casey Kasem rundowns which ITV showed late at night. I always had a soft spot for this song although I much prefer the album version to the remixed single version. They always had delicious deep cuts as well. Love Pop Suicide is probably my favourite of them. Scott's lyrics were so good. Big Bang Baby "nothing's for free" is brilliant. The sweet spot in Creep 100% is the piece of guitar just before he sings "half the maaaan" before the last time he sings "take time with a wounded hand...". Beautiful 👍

@@EchoMountain47 Not gonna lie, it was a weird crowd. All the young kids there for STP, and a bunch of folks who remembered the Stones from decades prior in their old leathers and concert shirts, ready for the Stones. It was a huge swath of ages and races and genders, and it was a respectful crowd and everyone seemed to have a great time. Like you say, how could you not? So many memories of that night - we were 35th row on the floor on the centre aisle, and we paid $54.50 (Cdn) each lol imagine. Some guy got pepper-sprayed and arrested a few rows over (if I remember right, he was wanted by the cops and bought a ticket in his own name so they knew where to get him, I think, what a dummy) so we all breathed in the spray and it was AWFUL. The Stones hadn't been playing Satisfaction on that tour and that night we were there they did! STP did an acoustic set in the middle of their set, complete with couches and that sit-down feel... Man, I had a blast. Also, I dug up my ticket stub: August 20, 1994 at the CNE.

I’m in the uk and it was about 1995 when I was introduced to STP with their ‘Purple’ album. I couldn’t get enough of it and quickly discovered ‘Core’ and as a 15 year old kid learning the guitar I went and bought the songbooks. They were never quite transcribed right but it doesn’t really surprise me! Such an underrated band STP were/are and for me those 2 albums along with their third ‘Tiny Music’ will forever be by far some of the greatest written and produced albums ever in my opinion. I never got the chance to see STP live (with Scott) but did get to see Scott in Velvet Revolver. The chemistry between those 4 guys in STP was something unique! Great video Rick!
