🔥We learn how a "strain gauge" works, how to pass from resistance changes to voltage values and read that with an ADC and then how to use these with a load cell and create a precision homemade scale.

Thanks for this video and web page. I'm currently working on a mostly 3D printed bench-top dynamometer with a Nextion Enhanced touchscreen and a Arduino Pro micro. Features include volt meter, amp meter, tachometer, 10A relay, 10Kg load sensor, a geared stepper (to control the break from the touchscreen) and a buzzer. I was trying to work out how I would incorporate a calibration sequence into all this. This was the most helpful video i found. Many THANKS!

I've made a few bicycle power meters using strain gauges. I use a simple amplifier and the Arduino’s own ADC, very basic but actually gives decent power data when set up correctly.

When you need twisted pairs, you could use LAN cables disassembled. Each cable contains 4 very well twisted pairs. If you need longer cables, you can use RJ-45 connectors !

Thank You - I have the idea for a project weighing seems to be the easiest way to measure. Your explanation was excellent - Thank you I am just learning about Arduino and it is simple enough plus flexible enough to handle my project. It is to easily measure volume (via weight) and control the temperature of water for a mash-lauter tun.

Good job. I think you should choose a thicker wooden base. This one is thin and thus some of the strain or deformation is occurring in the base. This can lead to a lower reading on the device.

For most average users with arduino background this is a great tutorial. Your gage handling practices in this video and adhesive info need improvement. The HX711 also has many issues with it's reading due to it's overly simplistic and antique architecture. A MUCH MUCH better BoB uses the ADS1120 or ADS1220. These are by FAR many orders of magnitude better be it more complicated. Selecting STC code, bridge arrangements, creep code, dealing with thermal issues (passive, manual, active) material installation, compensation for temperature range, gage protection, and more as well as proper gage installation techniques (glue dependent).

For the load-cell setup with a panel attached to it: is there a difference in the measured force depending on where on the panel the force is applied? The force I am measuring is very localized (small contact area), not vertical (not a scale), and is very weak (tens of mg), so I will need to compensate for such a difference if it exists.

for the 4 load cell setup with 1 load cell in each corner, how accurate is it when it come to weighing multiple items. like for example, what if there are like 5-10 items on the scale and the items are spread out all over, like some items are in different corners and some in the middle. Will this mess up with the total weight reading or will the scale be able to measure total weight accurately even with items spread out all over the scale?

Did you need to amplify the signal with additional components when using the strain gauge? I've also read that using more than 1 strain gauge can reduce error (for example, configuring 4 of them in a wheatstone bridge). Might be an interesting video.
@kwakeham

While the HX711 I generally regard as fit for the trash, it does have a built in programmable gain. This combined with it's old sigma-delta design gives generally better quality and less noisy data (SAR uses sample and hold, Sigma-Delta "integrate" over time). There are many many strain gage configurations depending on what you are mechanically trying to sense. Poisson setups, bending arrangements, differential beam arrangements, etc. Each using multiple strain gages. Search Omega Strain positioning PDF for a quick reference.

Greeting I have one question and maybe two :-). I would like to make one bee scale, but simple. Is it possible that there are only sensors under the hive or possibly hx711. And when I want to know how much weight it is, I connect only the arduino and it reads the state with hx711. All this interests me because of the consumption of the arduino and the batteries are quickly discharged and the weight is canceled again. I hope you will be able to help me and I am weak with this technique and thank you very much in advance.

You cant make correct mesurement like that. You have to put things exactly at the center of the platform or you need 4 legs and 4 sensors to compensate the position. Yes, there is something like torque.
