This video was great. Thanks for making it, I’ve been in despair at the state of industry and most of all felt sad at the fact I thought no one else could see what was going on but it’s great to see so many people sharing the same views and realising what’s going on so it’s not an entirely hopeless and lost generation which was a scary idea I almost got sucked into

I love the last minute of your video where you are on about the individual sending an artist a tweet, it's hard for myself as an artist also to get people to hear my stuff but when I receive messages like that it means the world and feels like what I do is worth doing, Thanks for making this video 🙏

If anyone in ANY career was only making 12% of the total profit to a company, when that person was the MAIN reason the money comes in and all, that person would quit on the spot. The music industry has a stranglehold on every musician and band that isn't already established.
@realhomerecording298

Well, you don't have to sign to a record label. Good luck making a career out of it. 12% of 1 million dollars = $120,000. How many musicians would like to be earning $120,000/year, as an example?

The saddest part is probably that we don’t get many classic-eligible albums anymore.

Th.El.Co._1 Thats not true at all, there’s been plenty of well regarded albums in this year alone. Maybe some of mainstream culture is backing away from albums but most artists and bands don’t. There’s plenty of discussion on albums if you just look at the right places. And what kind of person listens to an album on shuffle!?
@CynicalScorpio
@CynicalScorpio 5 лет назад
Um... Kids See Ghosts, To Pimp A Butterfly, A Moon Shaped Pool, After Laughter, ext. There will always be new and innovative albums that will be considered classics in the future. The only reason older decades seem like they have more classics is because the bad/mediocre stuff gets forgotten. Same will happen for our current decades, and people in the 2050's will act like the 2010's had more classic albums.

As a musician my self music streaming frustrates me it’s something that realy excites me as it makes it so much easier for people to find my music but at the same time it terrifies me cause if people have access to pretty much all music at the push of a button why would they bother listening to me hell how would they notice me at all when there’s so many other bands and artists out there especially when it’s all the terrible ones that get the spotlight and even if they do I’m gonna make no money from it I mean no I don’t do it for. Money I don’t cause I love music but that’s not the point I’d love music to be my job full time one day but I’d get nothing from putting my music out there and where I live none of the local Venus actually pay artists unless there relatively established and being people in to watch

You'll make it eventually if you work hard. Like you said yourself, it's easier than ever to discover new artists. People who have patience, talent and at least some know-how about marketing have an easier time than ever of building a fanbase without a label's hand in your pocket. Don't give up on the hussle, you will get your spoils in the end.

You don't necessarily have to be famous in order to make a decent money off of your music. I understand that there as so many talented artists on streaming platforms as well as terrible artists but the inability of streaming platforms to separate great music from the noise and promote those great songs to millions of audience is their shortcoming. Look out for distribution companies that have the potential to promote and sell music of talented unknown artists to millions of people and don't be afraid to sign off your music rights to them because at the end of the day, we all need each other and are all routing for each others success. Companies with good intentions are not out there to screw you. Good Luck!

Thanks for making this video. I'm getting tired of people saying "streaming has made music better than ever, you can listen to dozens of albums a day", while it's true that more music is easier to obtain, it doesn't make up for all the negatives that have happened due to it. People that are blindly advocating streaming are actively ruining the medium without knowing it

CDs are something I'm always going to prefer no matter how old I get.

Nothing lasts forever buddy and I don't believe paid subscription streaming will stay forever. When digital downloads came into the scene and replaced CD's and Albums, everyone thought it will stay forever but no one predicted streaming. The music industry keeps on changing constantly and new business models will take over soon that will be better than paid subscription streaming as well as give artists their fair share of royalties. I believe the future of the music industry is bright for both artists and music consumers!!!

I still buy cd’s and records and recently bought a personal CD player lol. I do this in part because 2 of my favorite artists aren’t streaming at all (Tool and King Crimson). I’m so glad Amazon and Discogs exist! Honestly the whole streaming taking over music frustrates the hell out of me. The thing I hate the most about it is that I understand why people use it out of convenience, it just happens to be at the literal expense of the artist. If a band make music worth listening to outside of the singles why not do them a solid and actually purchase their album?

I know you mean over past 6 years streaming has been doing my head in and most of the artists i listen to dont chart anymore all because of stream the UK Singles Charts have been full of crap over the past 5 or 6 years now. There a group from the Uk where am from a huge fan of he was really Big in the Early 10s he had 8 top 10 Singles 15 Top 40 Hits 2 Number 1 Singles in 2011 and a Number one Album all his Albums went to Number 1 on the UK Dance Charts he was really until Streaming Came that Ruined it all and most other artists from tha era. And i agree with you about buying Cds i still do aswell and i still download music on to my phone i dont use like Streaming i just do the Way people used to do back in the 00s and early 10s. And buying cds is a really good thing cuz it could come really handy like if you want to meet like your favourite artist and have like a picture you need to get like a cd signed like you cant just say to artist who i streamed your album hear sign my phone or tablat or whaever.

I think the streaming services does not only affect badly the artist on a monetary level, they also change the way we consume music. Before, you needed to go to a place and use money to buy albums at music store. When you are too young to have a job(me), you need to economise to buy cd. This make me crave the cd I want and when I finally own it, I feel lucky to have it and I appreciate it more. After several years of buying cd, I discovered that i prefer the music I bought myself to the music my parents already had in their collection. When using spotify, it is like taking music for granted. I am seriously afraid of the future of the music industry.

No wonder I've been turning into 80's music lately. Mainstream music nowadays doesn't satisfy me anymore, now I know why. The funny thing is I have gotten a lot into streaming over the past year, but at the same time, I started buying CDs again. Mainly because my car can't connect to my phone, but also because it's harder for me to enjoy an album on streaming -- because of the ads and the temptation to add other songs to the queue.

I'll admit, I do stream albums rather than buy them. But that's mostly because I'm only 16 and I can't use my parent's money willy-nilly buying albums. When I get to the age that I have my own credit card, what I'd do is buy the albums on, say, iTunes, and then listen to it on Spotify (since I like Spotify a bit better). Also, if I really like the album, I'll go out of my way to buy a physical copy of it (I do this now, even), so the artist still gets money and support from me. Also, I really hope that this changes sometime soon.

I think the most common model is to stream and buy your favourites on vinyl. iTunes is still unfair to artists, they take a huge cut, then the label takes a cut and the artist is still left with little. It’s better to buy records from independent music shops and buy the artists merchandise. Plus the vinyl experience is how music should be, you pay £9.99-£15 get a huge record with nice art to keep and you get an experience that digital doesn’t offer. Plus the analogue sound isn’t compressed. You can get a CD and have a similar experience but the music is compressed, the album art isn’t as big and the feeling isn’t the same

I think streaming let’s anyone be able to listen to all kinds of music and expand their taste to something they probably wouldn’t have listened to before, but streaming probably does more harm than good. It’s just sad how stale the charts are now. Also how talented artists aren’t as mainstream/ slash given the same exposure they probably could’ve gotten in the past. There might be another great song that no one will discover.Have you ever had a friend come over with a CD or Record and be like "Dude!!! Good thing is the labels are worth less and less. The same old labels that enslave the artists with unfair deals. The music industry's worth declined enormously in 2000 with Napster and now it's easier to get famous due to internet. One day the labels will die, the money will go straight to the artist

as an avid user of Spotify, (and a person who has become really dependant on it, cause it makes it a lot easier for me to search anything I feel like listening) I can definetley see your point in here. Easily one of the worst things that it has done for me is to deteriorate the "album" concept as a whole. And I said it a lot of times, I have the age and I am of the generation of not listening to full albums and most commonly listen to everything on the charts, and the now popular "playlists" which mostly have one song by some random artist you may like and no more (not really my case, even though I like some musicians that have good performances of charts, I do enjoy listening to albums, and never really liked the playlists). It is also very noticiable on how the industry is now trying to sell everything that becomes viral. I mean, you mentioned Bhad Bhabie, an excellent example of that but there you have the Walmart Kid, who even did get a gig on Coachella.

Tbh, the only reason I'm using streaming services, because it's the only thing I can do to support my favourite artist. I'm too broke to afford album, left alone concert

This video was amazing! I appreciate all you said. In fact my favourite band (fairly obscure) is having a party at a music venue to release ONE song. It’s totally unnecessary but they’re selling tickets to earn extra money. But I guess that’s how the music industry is. On the other hand I listen to tons of music and I don’t have the money to download all of it. So streaming is my best friend. It’s not the best thing ever, but it’s the best I can do.

I agree 100% with every point you made. I just started collecting vinyl this year. I have a crappy player but I’m going to be improving my setup soon. If anyone has any recommendations on record players and/or speakers at an affordable price I would appreciate it greatly.

I still like to buy CDs & also pay for Spotify premium, it's great having access to all the music in the world at the touch of the button, I hate how the record labels take huge chunk of the money & the artist only getting peanuts, It's unbelievable nobody has found a solution since the Napster started almost 20 years ago, the music industry is dying, it's a self inflicted death for the music industry for screwing with the artist and the consumer for far too long

I definitely still do still buy CDs (bought two today). Thank goodness I live in a city that still has indie record stores! That being said, I do stream music (mainly on Spotify). I stream albums that I'm thinking of buying or that I'm just curious about. Both of the CDs I bought today were albums that I streamed first, thanks to NPR and Spotify!

Also just thought I should put out there that the industry has always been unfair. 12% is actually one of the highest proportion artists have received. Even in the heyday of the industry back in the 70s and 80s you’d have top musicians struggling to make a living as labels were taking the biggest cuts. It’s just now the whole industry is screwed over rather than those that sign a bad deal. The Beatles only made something like 1% from each album sale in their initial record contract

I buy the albums I really love on CD or as a digital download. I literally have that same Green Day shirt you showed! I probably spend too much on concert tickets and band merch. I really try to support the bands and artists I love. I liked this video, it was informative with good graphics. You make a lot of good points. I hope the music industry changes to support more actual musicians , but that will only happen when people get tired of the same boring mass produced crap.

There is only so much money and time anyone can spend on consuming music. And because the quality is low and the quantity is high, it's becoming more and more disposable and forgettable. Older fans are still enjoying the album format on LP and CD. No compression, more quality tracks.

Woooow.... so people out here really selling their souls for nothing. Just for 12%. I am going to go to school and focus on stuff of importance. Music and acting can be a hobby. However, after 5:25 I honestly can’t / don’t believe it and I rather have all my money not just some.
@shadieossei4336

The fact that talented artists are not making enough money off of their music via streaming doesn't mean music should be just a hobby. If a revolution should happen soon in the music industry and a new way of doing music business becomes adapted to favor artists more, music can be a full-time job for artists who keep working hard. All it takes to make music have real value and for artists to make millions of dollars is for there to be a change in the music industry's business model! A change will come soon!!!
