When you eat something loaded with sugar, your taste buds, your gut and your brain all take notice. This activation of your reward system is not unlike how bodies process addictive substances such as alcohol or nicotine -- an overload of sugar spikes dopamine levels and leaves you craving more. Nicole Avena explains why sweets and treats should be enjoyed in moderation.

The best way that I can describe sugar withdrawal is that it feels kind of like when you are extremely thirsty, and feel a great urge to drink water. Sugar withdrawal is similar to that - kind of like you are "thirsty for sugar" - and this is definitely quite unpleasant to go through during the first couple days.
@ArcaneWaveAudio

Or months.
@ezgi6392
@ezgi6392 2 года назад
Very accurate. That's exactly how I also describe sugar withdrawals. It almost turns into a physical need after you don't eat for some time.
@0ptimal
@0ptimal Год назад
Yes, similar description for drug addiction. But magnified. The brain and body adapt to the presence of a substance, wiring itself to function with it, and when that substance is missing the body urges the person to seek it, because now the system is out of whack. In essence it adopts the substance as its own, forms strong attachments, which becomes it's new reality. Pretty amazing process actually, and it permeates everything in our lives, these adoptions/integrations and attachments. Even non physical things. But there is an optimal balance for our evolutionary make-up, which is something we must obey, and many attachments we have are not beneficial for it. It's like a piano playing a beautiful song, and someone randomly adding an off note, or many. Eventually you may get used to the sound but at it's core it is distorting the fundamental structure of the song.

+aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa define regular basis in general terms and define regular basis for the cerebral cortex. isn't it possible to crave whilst abstaining in order to reduce or halt consumption? self-control, willpower, disicipline and focus, to name a few, are characteristics that can help enable change if or when necessary (even in the midst of somatization, to an extent). unless it's a medical or severe somatic problem.
@Funwinxpixee
@Funwinxpixee 6 лет назад
its true. Once you 'understand' the negative effects of it on your system instead of just forcing yourself to not consume it...you will start to control your sugar intake. If you do it for a month it becomes a habit
@moyga
@moyga 6 лет назад
It's true that the cravings die down and your tastebuds do shift, for example, fruit starts to taste much sweeter and better than it did before, but for many people, myself included, if you eat processed sugary foods again, they will instantly retrigger those high-level cravings that you had before. It's similar to having one cigarette after not smoking for 2 months. Unfortunately, if you are predisposed to finding sugar highly addictive, its difficult to try to have it in moderation. It will trigger binge eating, heightened appetite and cravings.

@luckycharm1212
@luckycharm1212 2 года назад
You can't find balance. And that's why you keep eating it. It means you got or getting addicted to sugar. If that's the case then you need to treat sugar like any other drug. Abstinence(not moderation)is the solution for drug addiction. But if you believe that you are among some of those people who can take a few bites of dessert and stop or eat it occasionally then you can enjoy sugary treats. Else you are going to feel like a failure. And that's not your fault.
@ForTheGoodOfHumanity
@ForTheGoodOfHumanity 2 года назад
@@luckycharm1212 I could not agree MORE!!!! An alcoholic can’t drink in moderation, so why do is sugar addicts think we can just have ‘balance’. It might work for some, and by some, I mean 1% lol. You really do have to have an ‘All or nothing’ mindset with getting rid of sugar. There is no ‘sugar on the weekends’ or ‘sugar at special events’ bc for some that’s just a rabbit hole and it leads to binging. All it takes is that one piece of cake or that one cookie and BOOM you’re sucked in again. It’s a very VERY viscous cycle. As someone who is overcoming a binge eating disorder, I find that not eating sugar and bread keeps me from going off the edge. I love fruits! I eat them a few times a week! As for things with added sugars, for my health and my sanity I plan to never eat them again!

I had a sugar addiction, it really can be called that. I had been buying myself a bar of chocolate or a candy bar for a year or more on a regular basis (every couple of days), this is if you don't count the sweet tea that I constantly drink. I just couldn't do without it, I couldn't concentrate on anything until I ate the damn sugar... and yes, my teeth are affected too. The problem was getting worse, and I decided to finally end it. I did not completely give up sweet purchases (I have already said why above), but I reduced the dose gradually, and now buying sweets is an exceptional rarity for me. Saving money and saving your health is what you will have if you prevent sugar addiction.

Good food has long term effects - making you feel much better throughout the day, whereas sugar will give you a momentary spike and you will feel worse because there is little to no nutritional value in sugary food.
@rdm8180
@rdm8180 4 года назад
its because you eat to much sugar, increase sugar levels, the body is taking in alot too fast, your stomach gets bigger, then you need to eat more because your stomach is bigger but your body is still the same and only needs at around 1100-2300 cals (different for everyone), but when you restrict the sugar your body will "reset" its calorie intake and boom, you are on your way to a better life. It's how I did it, i went from 318 to 179 in two years

@albertalbert7958
@albertalbert7958 8 лет назад
You don't like socializing still you come to RU-vid to post...internet has become a new way of socialization especially for people with poor social skills, awkward or too sensitive. Nothing wrong with that but be aware that there are many ways of socialize. Even watching TV could be considered a way to stay involved in social interactions. Unless you spend the day doing meditation, studying or creating something chances are you are socializing in some way.
@parnianx
@parnianx 8 лет назад
I can understand your point. I'm the same way. You don't have to be awkward, sensitive or shy to not enjoy socializing. Some people just don't get energy from spending time with other people the way they do spending time alone, even if they have awesome friends. Ain't nothing wrong with that, and I know awesome successful people who have no problem admitting that they're like that. Check out Jason Silva and his videos, he's one! And I promise you will love the stuff he talks about! :)

If you want me to start linking to primary research articles (which as a medical student and biology teacher I can), that's fine too but very much more tedious to general readers who want answers quickly. :)

For me if I don’t eat dessert or snacks like candy or chips for a long period of time and I see it on the market after I exercised I literally can not move away my eyes it’s like I want it so much. I am watching this because I have noticed a significant decline in my memory, short term specifically, and losing concentration and focus. I forget small things, easily lose my track of mind, and forget what i'm talking about often. It has gotten to the point that it hurts my head to think because I know the information, I just can't remember and it scares me. I know I am addicted to sugar and I have my whole life. I do not eat many fruits or veggies or take vitamins either. It is hard because I don't gain weight and have always been fit, so I assumed I never needed to change the way I eat because I never had an issue, but the real issue is inside and not on the outside. I am also so tired all the time and I have a hard time finishing tasks, thinking with my Dr I may have ADHD. But when the medication isn't "working" my concerns go elsewhere. This video was very informational. I have always been very creative and intelligent, but I am clearly noticing a decline as I get older. Any easy ways to begin shifting my diet would be appreciated.

I become more compulsive too, and have fatigue as well. And I am someone who is very fit but also has been vegan for 12 years. I can’t remember anything! The harsh reality is to give up sugar but I keep thinking I can live a “moderation” lifestyle. It never works :(

I think there is a slight confusion. Sugars are note necessarily bad for you, it is just the fact that most of us, like, probably almost everyone in the US, eat way too much of it in general; And way too much of particular types of sugars as well. Also, I will say that I think we hone in on Bleached Granulated Cane Sugar (Table Sugar) when we hear the word sugar, but other sugars like fructose (When eating a fruit) and Honey are much better for you.

Sugar is not bad for you at all, why is it that every lean person I know eat most of their calories from sugar, and yet are skinny? Well, its because it gives you energy, as well as not all of the sugar gets used. Some of the sugar goes to glycogen stores, but excess sugar goes through urin. You would have to eat a bunch of it to begin fat storage. But when you eat fat as well, the insulin stores the calories from fat as fat. When you only eat sugar, insulin only stores the sugar in muscles, but fat cant be stored in muscle. A diet high in fat and low in carbs also makes you thin, as no insulin can store the fat calories. But you will not have as much energy, and you will strugle during workouts and such. Thats why it can work for sedentary people, but carbs are not the enemy.

The WalkingJoke Personally I don't base whether something is bad for you on how fattening it is. Avocados are kinda fattening but are very good for you like most veggies. But if I cut back on sugar I do feel healthier. I once cut sugar almost completely for three weeks and people commented how great my skin looked. but it does affect everyone differently.

Well yeah, it's not bad, but problem is, most people consumed table sugar alone each day. They said the maximum amount for sugar consumption everyday for healthy male is 35g. A can of coke contains 35g of sugar. Lots of products contains tons of sugar, people just don't realize they actually consumed it.

fructose is not necessarily better for you. Of course eating a fruit is not unhealthy, but e.g. softdrinks contain a lot of fructose and that is not healthy at all

I was lazy to the point, I developed diabetes and heart disease. I had a eating disorder. If I didn’t eat food I would cry. I used to 40-90 cookies a day. Drinking about 20-30 sodas. In like two days in total.

That's the issue. As a once overweight and obese person who loved sweets, even now when I'm at a healthy weight when I eat sweets I totally binge out, and almost always the whole day. Like I become a psycho eating sweets. I can eat 20 cookies and eat a burrito and although I'm dying of fullness I eat other shit. How do I control that? That's why I'm scared of eating sweets because of my lack of control which really isn't healthy for you. And it puts all my hard work to waste. Anyone has any tips??? Thanks loves.

Try some l-tyrosine, the amino acid precursor to dopamine. That may help…google for more info.

Ariana, I think eating sweets and sugary foods in moderation is okay. Don't try to quit cold turkey. Your body will revolt big time. I think the problem is that the more sugary food you eat, the more your body craves it. So, the trick is to try to replace sugary food with a more natural sugar like fruit. Even carrots are sugary. Then taper off. You'll have to track what you eat in order to know how much sugar that you are consuming each day. Have you ever used myfitnesspal.com? That is a great, free tool in tracking your nutrition.

Have you ever looked into overeaters anonymous? The symptoms you describe of just not being able to control yourself sound similar to many members. Like an alcoholic who just simply cannot have one drink, many people who have eaten compulsively in the past have developed lasting addictions that they can experience recovery from if they seek help and support. It has totally transformed my life, my happiness and my body.

Starch is NOT just sugar, it is a polysaccharide, or a complex carbohydrate, unlike sugar which is usually a monosaccharide (though disaccharide is also common). Not articulating the distinction in how these molecules are metabolized is not doing this topic justice. Also, presenting the brain's craving of variety in food being due to a strategy to gain varied micronutrients is a misrepresentation as it doesn't account for the brain's fundamental preference for variation/diversity/novelty in nearly all areas. Also, this video didn't at all examine insulin resistance and increasing need for higher levels of sugar to promote similar blood glucose levels as the initial surge and that such promotes further sugar consumption, unlike a balanced meal.

In my case there is no such thing as addiction to sugar, after eating a lot of sugar you get that unwanted feeling of yours that feeling of sick which discourages you from eating sugar again. But a little sugar once is very useful.

It's all about balance. I have been struggling with eating disorders, eat blinge, but now I'm good. I don't take to much sugar I as used to, just one time per week. I'm going to have lettuce for lunch, but I must confess that I'm thinking about the delicious ice cream I'm gonna have in the next 10 days. It will be worth the wait.
