What's up NUB NATION! Today I set out to the challenge of creating a surfing documentary in 24hrs. It started out as one thing & turned into something completely different, but a surf video that I'm extremely proud of. If this vlog helps one person get sober and find there passion in life then you've done your job. For me... you do this everyday for me. Hey Ben! I recently picked up surfing after moving to California for sober living. I’d just lost everything and didn’t even know if I wanted to be sober. Picking up my board was mostly a irresponsible bad financial decision but it was something I had to do after months of battling it out getting destroyed I finally got up and the hook was set. I’ve since gotten incredibly serious about surfing but even more serious about my sobriety. I feel the same way about California as you do about Florida. This place and surfing saved. From here it’s just good health and clean living from this point out. Thank you for what you do and always pointing out that it’s supposed to be fun.

Congrats to 5 years Ben! I moved back to Sri Lanka to find myself. I was 38 when i started the never ending journey of surfing. Suddenly that was more important than my drug addiction. I don't know what happened but it was something. In february it will be 1 year clean and sober. And i will be 40 years old. Drugs and crimes for so long, now waves and saltwater... Thanks for the motivation! Stay Humble!

Yaaaaaa! I moved to satellite from Miami to slow down and simplify my life.... Been focusing on surfing and removed a lot of the negative stuff from my past and life is just so much better man. I've been sober two years now, and you were an influence. My life has improved immeasurably. I've written this in a comment before: "The perfection of means with the loss of goals", a bit of Zen Buddhism I got turned onto decades ago. It means do "Now" right, and the future falls into place. You can't do "Now" right when you're fucked up. Forget about the future.

Greetings from Portugal/Nazaré It's been 22 years since I last injected heroine into my bloodstream. I had literally nothing, was parking cars and sleeping on beach imagining the best rides because I had no board nor strenght, or even will. Today I run my own company and I'm cool with my parents, friends, new girlfriend that I know since high school. Four years ago next January, 2020 I lost my wife, even though she was.clean she suffered from hepatitis C and sadly couldn't make it. We have a boy, however he doesn't fancy surfing that much, he's into boxing and rock climbing. I don't why I'm telling you this, but I believe in you as much as I believe in myself. We have that power. Once you get started, and you'll only know that when destiny suddenly shuffles you into big tests and difficulties that you'll have to overcome while you're in recovery. Life is awesome, go.for it. 😉✌

I was 10 weeks clean and sober yesterday and I’ve been back into surfing since my then, watching job and you and for the first few vlogs had no idea you were in recovery. I just thought, “ that guy has something I want” and now I know why. You are dead right about living and nurturing ALL of life cause when you have been as low as us it’s so scary to think I could be that sad and lonely again. It was a psychic change that I need ed before drugs and drink so I definitely needed one after they had gone. Keep doing what your doing Ben people are on this journey with you brother! Peace

I like this video so much I had to go back and watch it again, this was posted on my birthday and got me thinking back to the old days.I'm born and raised in Florida grew up surfing mostly at Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna Beach and remember surfing with Kelly and his brother when they were teens in local competitions. As a fellow East coast surfing addict, I have also found happiness from surfing, I used to be depressed and a dickhead to everybody but surfing has made me change in such a positive way even outside of the ocean, I stay happy even when the waves are flat, because I know a swell will eventually come, there is something about reaching that flow state while surfing that can’t even be replicated with drugs, love you Ben

Life is what you make of it! Thank you for choosing positively and inspiring others to do so as well. My wife and I lost everything when the kilauea volcano eruption took our home in June 2018. I had a regimen of surf every morning at the break near my home, Pohoiki bay, which had a number of different breaks, was also covered when the lava entered the ocean. Then shortly after I had full shoulder replacement surgery, 40 plus years of paddling takes its toll. The past year has been a difficult one, but honestly your videos have been of great help for my mental wellness. I'm finally at a point physically where I can paddle again, but I'm a little scared, it's still sore and about 70% strength. Coincidentally, we are moving to Melbourne beach next year! By far the best video you've ever done Ben. Inspirational story mate.....I beat a 17 year addiction to heroin and opiates, so I can relate. I'd like to see you share this testimony to a lot more people...not just the surfing community. man i started watching your channel right as u went through rehab on ur knee, I was in a dark place also struggling with mental health and university at the same time ! ur videos and stoke level made me feel better. Then I saw ur brother hobs channel and started watching him too ! so good to see you are happy. I love your vlog!!! I've been dry for over 25 years now and I believe the only way to really know yourself is to be without drugs or alcohol. I made me learn who i am good and bad and there's no excuse. When I got clean i never wanted to say i did something because of drugs or alcohol. If i make a decision it's because of me and my crazy mind! Keep being a great example that life is amazing!!! I’m living in Melbourne, grew up absolutely obsessed with the water and taught myself to surf from age 5. I am now 23 I got pretty close to losing myself and everything that’s ever made me who I am. I’m not saying I’ll ever be able to earn money from it or anything material, but seeing your show was like seeing everything my soul knew was righteous and true manifested in the real world.
