How Sweet, the Ugly Duckling, and the meaning of “NewJeans is everywhere”

I too wonder about the 'Supernatural' EP release coming in a month. So far "Right Now" relates to wanting someone right now and not caring about what others think. The MV should be released in about a week or two just like "Bubble Gum" MV. The 'How Sweet' EP was SO GOOD and "Right Now" also sounds amazing, the members recently said they have many things prepared and fans wont be able to rest this year so I am VERY excited. Especially since their album is still scheduled for release in the 4th Quarter of this year.

I can’t help but seeing this song in the context of ADOR’s feud with Hybe.

I really like your point of highlighting how the sweatness of apples contrasts with the sweatness of bubble gum. To me it makes the choice to do Coca-Cola product placement more mystifying though, as that totally coloured how I read the sweatness. The instrumentation for Bubble Gum as feels more natural than the instrumentation on How Sweet. I guess there being hidden meaning under the surface is a pretty consistent theme of NewJeans though. I'm still not sure how I feel about whether it ties together for me.

Also, the apple could be a biblical nod, as in consuming the apple of knowledge, and leaving Eden. Their parent company, and its financial support, could be seen as the garden they’re escaping. The encountering of animals along the way supports this, as animals would be the only witness to the people leaving Eden. There’s also the nod to one of their biggest partnerships - Apple, whose logo is an apple with a bite mark. ADOR has always prioritized independent budgeting and financing - when they say “it’s like biting an apple,” they’re also saying, we already have big backers, and we achieved this without our parent company.

Okay, one standout line that I've noticed in this song is "It's like biting an apple". This got me looking more in-depth into the lyrics of the song. And it almost reminds me of Eve and how she found the apple in the Garden of Eden. Could it be New Jeans narrating the relief of biting the apple, seeing how sweet it tastes, and finding the knowledge that leaving that person they were in love with is better for them? Having a burden of knowledge tastes sweeter than being with someone who sucks/or is not compatible in innocent ignorance. Could that demon in the lyric be the serpent tempting to change the girl's storyline with new knowledge? Again, I'm not Christian, so I could be completely inaccurate. So please be forgiving of my analysis. edit: Very detailed analysis indeed!! I enjoyed this video so much. Could the narrative of this song be aligned with their current situation?

Great video as always! You basically broaden what I already had as theories for this music video, and explained it better. I had one theory though about how How Sweet relates to everything happening around them, that goes in perfect tandem with your ugly duckling theory. It makes sense with newjeans being the ugly ducklings, because hybe is activately trying push them of the company with this whole ador-hybd scandal. A lot of their fans are turning on them for the dumbest of things now too, (Hanni's new hair, Hyein's "attitude", Danielle being quiet, and Minji being loud. Haerin is the only one whose safe) and other fans are busy making the fandom look bad by hating on Ilit and their fans. People only seem to give them the time of day to hate on or criticize them. Also, many of the lyrics seem to be pointing to the scandal as well. "I've been praying for a miracle" is reference to the girls hoping everything will be alright. "All the drama it's good karma" Minji wishing that hybe gets what they deserve for trying to throw them out. Finally, I think that the chorus could saying that being with hybe was sweet because of the opportunities they got, but now it's coming to a close. Plus, I'm betting "the toxic lover" and "little demon in my storyline" is hybe. The only bad thing in their careers is hybe, because they wouldn't references the things mhj did. Anyway, good video! That's just my two cents!

this is what I love in newjeans. you can interpret it in diff ways. your interpretation is good an valid. everytime I hear it seems this is related to their connection to hybe while bubble gum is their connection to members , team and bunnies

My guess was that they died from the car crash and nobody could see them as they came back as ghosts. Supernatural will be a continuation of this.

I'm sorry if I missed it, but where do you explain your interpretation of "NewJeans is everywhere"? 🙂 To me Bubble Gum has been summer Ditto since the first full listen and with How Sweet's musical direction I can confidently say that this double disc is like OMG and Ditto summer edition and that's a compliment in the best way possible! I'm actually VERY excited for Supernatural and Right Now! The collaborative designs with Takashi Murakami are great and the images for Supernatural on their site, especially Hanni with the orange wig and the translucent nose piece, give off some slight futuristic vibes but we'll see. I really enjoyed these 2 songs, as much as I wish it was a longer EP or even an album I knew that probably wasnt going to happen due to their company issues rn. I did see a redit thread saying that we are going to get 2 full length albums in 2025?? IDK if that was just a rumor but it would make some sense as they only have like 15 songs.

The one that i always love from newjeans is their obscure and surreal concept, that always deliver some mysteries and have a pretty deep philosophical meaning Anyways good breakdown, i never thought about it

I also think, relating to the biting an apple lyric, that it can refer to the symbolic loss of innocence and ignorance that they had under Hybe. Paralleling the biblical story of Adam and Eve when they were deceived into eating the apple from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They are no longer afforded the grace that they debuted with under that company (relationship) and are forced to enter a world where they have to fend for themselves, and which not everything is provided to them. Now that they have the knowledge of what’s going on, as does everybody else, what will their decision be? In this case, they decided to leave the relationship. I wanted to add this point of view to your analysis because MHJ has alluded to biblical stories before such as when she was at the press conference and described her conflict with Hybe when it relates to NewJeans. In short, in the book of Kings, two women come forward claiming to be the true mother of a baby and King Solomon suggests that they split the baby in half, knowing only the real mother would never allow this to happen under any circumstance. Of course, the false mother doesn’t care and agrees to this but the true mother cares too much about the baby and insists that the false mother just takes the baby instead of seeing it destroyed. MHJ alikes her pain to the true mother.

What I love the most about NewJeans is the unique story behind each song, the meanings are beautiful and you can tell there was effort put into it. My first favourite was “Ditto” catchy & the meaning was behind it was inspirational. NewJeans new single is different, it’s usual addictive aura has changed. Each song has different lyrics but the same addictive, satisfying feeling but now I can feel a difference. It’s more addictive and very good, I was like “hm, this feels different but I can’t put my finger on it..” NewJeans are going to change the K-pop industry, I can’t get enough of their songs..

i loved your video, you had an amazing analysis !! while it initially sounds like newjeans is referring to a toxic partner ("how sweet it tastes now that im without you"), but they could also be referring to toxic presences in a broader sense, like how you mentioned going into the meta; "everything is typical" and "i know it’s an old trick, it’s a very simple formula" in reference to the rigidness and repetition of the industry; "done scrolling a thousand times" in reference to viewers mass consumption of the industry's content. overall a huge part of the mv is just different point of views, how different can someone see the world/a situation through their own lens?

i think this is about a particular conflict going on. the conflict has religious elements. in the coke studio interview, Hyein is wearing the number 80 and a bandana that looks like a certain flag. the numbers 17&80 can be seen on the license plate of the truck carrying goats. look up the religious significance of those two numbers. And in a certain alphabet the 17th letter is associated with the number 80... In this MV tho, Hyein is wearing snake print. There is even Noah's ark/flood themes, like the rivers (St.Lawrence ontario, nile river, 98.2fm Radio Riverside, the water in the Lizard) and the rainbows that can be seen due to the fire hydrant. Then there is the constant presence of animals. And the raincoats. so in short, i think this music video has to do with certain young people not being here anymore (a war) and that seems kinda dark and evil but then i realize Hyein is missing from this comeback so unless she is a sacrifice i think they are on the other side of the conflict, idk. but they are also telling us to stop paying attention "done scrolling thousand times" "no more drama it's good karma" 해서 그렇지 이런 헛소리 (No more) How it's supposed to be 'cause it's clear" There is also a call back to the hype boy MV and to the ASAP MV when Danielle puts on the Ring-pop she is in the mirror (Alice in wonderland) and than Haerin licks the lollipop. Also, in the beginning of one of Bubble Gum performance (inkigayo) Danielle is wearing a ring that looks a lot like the ring the creepy bunny is wearing in ASAP and the shadow claw turns into the yellow bunny. I think Danielle's ring turns from silver and green (like in ASAP and the Inkigayo performance) to gold and green. this can be seen when Haerin is poking her Takashi Murakami 'Right Now' plushie. I've also seen Danielle doing dog ears at the end of one of the performances this come back and in the doodles in the very beginning of this MV the dog is smiling at Haerin's name and Danielle has spirals in her name (Alice in wonderland). In Danielle's '10 fav things interview' she said she loves the cactus toy. A cactus is worn by Haerin on the back of her jacket in this MV and in some performances, plus the toy is in the connivence store with the ring pop and green lollipop. Haerin also had a cactus BDay cake. In addition, there is lots of CCTV in this video (beginning animation and camera perspectives) I think this is about the surveillance state we live in where you cant express your opinion. Hyein is also wearing a shirt that says "Hysteric" in this MV. I don't know why cows are in the beginning illustrations because they aren't in this video. The animated spider always has coca-cola inside. Now for connections that im less confident about: I wonder if the lizard has anything to do with that far out conspiracy theory of entities who rule. Oct. 29th is at the beginning for some reason. M4.2 (seen in the train scene) is 24th of May backwards which is when the song was released. there is also an arrow pointing that way.
