ngl, I almost cried when I saw the Bubblegum MV, like, everything regarding Newjeans was feeling like a nightmare at that time and it just felt fake, and I was so hyped for the release... anyway Great video as always, way too much effort in all of these essays, you DESERVE more recognition. Keep it up
I have noticed this cb isn’t popping off like their previous titles. Of course it’s doing great in Korea but here it’s not taking off, especially with aespa’s Supernova doing amazing
1m+ album sales(singles btw beating OMG record) , 3 wins against aespa and multiple kpop artist dancing with their song maybe its not taking off for you because your fave is different thats why tiktok is suggesting you different videos😁😁
How sweat and bubble gum have really good and interesting production, the best production I have heard this year, I don’t know where I would rank these song compare in newjeans discography. Attention is newjeans best song Eta is newjeans best title tracks. How sweet and bubble will have way more longivity than hype boy but hype boy has more interesting texture even It make sense to call them singles, these songs don’t feel like title track but they don’t feel like b-side like hurt either.
I like both songs but wish they had pushed the chorus of How Sweet harder. Still its a nice chill vibe and I was so happy to see their return after all the kdrama.
Most of the songs that NewJeans released previously were “popping”, catchy, bright and happy contrasting with their other songs featuring darker/more dull colour palettes, and a deeper meaning; the album how sweet is like the inbetween of both these themes, the girls appear more mature and the setting looks so natural due to their locations especially in the how sweet MV, the instrumentals are more catchy than the lyrics in my opinion and honestly it’s great to have such varity of music to listen to. The album only containing two tracks (w/out the instrumentals) isn’t as bad as I expected because their japanese debut will happen shortly after and I can never grow tired of the incredible pictures of the members😄
In my opinion how sweet and bubblegum are the type of song that would be liked by their fans (because well they are their fans) not by their casual listeners. Both songs are underwhelming.
I think their comeback this time is genuinely related to their relationship with Hybe. It started with bubble gum which is kind of the beginning of the relationship and how nice it started (honeymoon phase). Then switched to how sweet which is “now that I’m without you” which I think also relates to their now current relationship with Hybe which could explain the more monotone voice, it’s a break up song kind of. Idk maybe I’m stretching it but it’s just something to think about. As a fan from the US I don’t listen to a lot of K-pop but I can say for sure NewJeans just hits different hope everything goes well for them. I actually liked How Sweet more than Bubblegum lol which is unpopular take.
17:11 oh, yes new jeans having 40mil reach in payed playlists is such "sabotage" 🙄 please be for real. As if hybe can prevent people from listening and buying music, if they underperformed it's their producer's fault ultimately, cause these girls have close to none input in the product they put out "Hate towards young females" - well isn't it mhj who attacked two hybe girlgroups and now facing defamation lawsuit? She also literally cursed and shamed nj and her female colleague who was SAed
People were finding the niche artists MHJ was inspired by because she claimed others plagiarized her when she did the same thing. K-pop thrives on copying (whether music or concepts) so it is hypocritical of her to say those things about those groups. Trends run in circles anyway. We see it in fashion, music, etc. I think New Jeans peak musically was Cool With You and Get Up ironically. Those are my favorite songs from them. The new releases were underwhelming especially how sweet. Bubblegum was pretty cute musically, but nothing that would warrant a separate music video. The mvs were boring compared to what they put out before. Again Cool With You, Ditto, etc. had such an interesting plot. Maybe my expectations were too high for them and their company. And maybe that is why MHJ felt so threatened by Illit having a cute girl concept. It kind of proves that NJ is replaceable in the "cute girl, cute music concept" unlike groups she is trying to surpass that have a more unique sound and concept.
Also I don't see how HYBE is hindering this group at all... They debuted with no debts and a big budget. If they wanted to hinder them they could just stop all promotions and activities. NJ is one of the most well-promoted and well-rested groups in HYBE. They want NJ to do well. They want to make money and, they want to not rely on BTS so much. Crazy that some people think this way. A company wants to make as much money as possible. They just don't trust MHJ, and MHJ wants her own company and as much credit for their success as possible.
Hmm, I don't necessarily agree with you, especially on your take on the copying. Yes, there's a lot of similarities with niche/old artists and MHJ's present work. But the difference is that NJ is only just about 2 years older than Illit while the work/media that MHJ took inspiration from for NJ is over two decades old (and those artists aren't promoting or are/were active in other fields). Adding the HYBE inside "drama" onto that, will certainly make anyone in her position feel like it's done in spite of her and basically to replace her. I think she had a lot of reason to call HYBE/Bang PD out for copying her current artistic direction, even if it wasn't groundbreaking or super original. Also, copying and taking inspiration is the basis for art. You can say K-Pop thrives on copying, but so does any other art industry.
Hybe shade huh? if MHJ had a stsrt up co. or if these girls debuted in a small company, no matter how talented and charismatic rhey are, would they be able to afford an amazing mv director, would they have the luxury to travel around the world to shoot their mvs, would high end brands and products give them a time of day? The reality is ador hir a jackpot with these amazing girls that fits perfectly with MHJ vision but bec of greed and unrivalled conceit and delusion of being the only clever artistic one in the industry MHJ has to ruin everything that the GP has already started to cherish... why are we not satisfied with 13x stock option why we have to demand for 30x, why are we not satisfied with 75 million dollars and has to vye for hundred millions more, why is 1.5M+$ annual salary not enough when u know very well u are the top most paid ceo in the industry? huh i dont know how can a person be happy and be satiated?
i love your videos and do agree we are spending too much time fanning MHJ's ego like- that whole situation got weird really fast. Both sides are weird. How did you make that media player?
Both of these are not bad songs by any means but they feel boring compared to all their previous releases. It feels very underwhelming. Also i feel bad saying but this comeback feels soulless and cold. Maybe its the styling or the clothing or the song itself? Or possibly the mood itself. Does anyone else feel that?
or maybe because youre not newjeans fan😂😂 1m+ album sales(singles btw beating OMG record) , 3 wins against aespa and multiple kpop artist dancing with their song
I just discovered your channel through this review! I really like the new comback of NewJeans. Althought i think Bubble Gum would have been a better titletrack. I hope the girls are good after all that drama regarding HYBE and ADOR it was so sad to see. I will definitely check out more videos from you. Wish you a good day!
The downgrade of the creative direction and music is evident in this era. It was one of the most flat and uncreative visuals I saw of this era. Musically, this is just repetitive with whelming production. The songs have little to no dynamics, and it's lacking that extra oomph and texture. I always expect Ador to work only with 250 since his production works are influenced by hyperpop in the sense of adding textures to his work. The instrumental of Hybe Boy and Attention are so interesting because there are so many unusual textures used, and they sound rich and full of depth. With How Sweet and Bubblegum, it's as if Ador has restricted 250's production style because the textures he used sounded a lot safer, and it's not as eclectic as Attention or Hybe Boy. Even in the get up ep, the tracks produced by 250 have distinctive and interesting production despite its repetitive nature. I am just tired of being disappointed.
Calling it a downgrade is kinda dramatic.. that's your personal opinion, imo I think it feels like a more mature version of debut era woth a mix of simplicity of 90s 80s
I love your videos so much. The way you talk about music with love and passion but through calm delivery is just perfect. Thank you for the video. Our thoughts align really well. The only thing is that i probably would not change anything in 'Bubble gum'. Something in simplicity and, once again, calmness of this song catches me. It feels so intentionally minimalistic. Also really like this city pop (?) type of synth that sometimes pops up. It gives a feeling of levitating and bouncing from a cloud to cloud. So soft and pretty. In case of 'How sweet' i totally agree with everything. With both criticism and praise. The only thing i can add is that i am absolutely in love with this drum machine sound in intro and chorus. It reminds me of the sound you hear when shooting something in retro games but mixed in melody. Really cute. And i also kinda can see Hybe shade too. But, i think, any empowering break up kinda song would feel like this in the situation given
i will always support newjeans through even bad comebacks because they are always experimental and I really respect that. They could've replicated their debut songs concept in the get up ep but they chose a different concept and sound which was a bit risky. Same with this comeback. Its experimental and I'll always support that.
I think the min heejin hybe drama has affected them negatively also rhe music is getting samey in that their vocals are the same in every release and there is no variety. Also for me the songs are sounding unispired tbh.
honestly i've been thinking about making a standalone review about it but i don't think a lot of my subs are orbits 😭but it is hands down the most ambitious post-loona project, it's so adventurous, futuristic and has eclectic productions, but i am STILL missing the charms max & match, love & evil and [x x] had on artms and jaden in this post-loona era
it’s okay i think it’s just the song is not that much formulated to be a #1 hit in the first place 😭 but im pretty surprised ‘bubble gum’ didn’t get a PAK.. because korea loves this kind of song
