Sam explores the ways in which our currently unpredictable self-quarantine climate relates to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, which marks the beginning of the end for both the Golden Age of Cinema and that of the prolific filmmaker itself. Buckle up for a video editorial which references Inglourious Basterds and Sharon Tate's rise to fame to deconstruct its controversial ending in a way you (hopefully) haven't heard before.

I find it fascinating that Tarantino was kind of a poster child of the New American Independent film movement and has a reputation of being one of those filmmakers that does things different and edgier than what traditional Hollywood wants. And yet he actually has nostalgia for when Hollywood was at its most traditional with the least amount of edge - it’s golden age. Film history might have misjudged him....

Because he still has a lot of love for every form of cinema.

Because Tarantino is ultimately not a subversive filmmaker. Perverse indulgence is not rebellious.

I watched once upon a Time in Hollywood at least 38 times now!! This is my favorite movie by Quentin Tarantino. The dialogue is extremely rememberable and still quoted today on social media. Rick and Cliff’s Broship was just Perfect!! Sharon Tate played by Margot Robbie was hired to play her alive in spirit and living her best life something that was taken from her. People seem to miss judge that, you don’t need a lot of lines to prove your worth as an actress. The soundtrack and camera work was just perfect!! 🎥

This was such a great review! This may be a strange opinion, but this film is right up there with Pulp Fiction for me as being Tarantino's best film. Your review was spot on talking about how there wasn't really a narrative thrust. That's what I enjoyed about the film; it was pure escapism, showing a bygone era I was never alive to experience. This was a great video, and I'd love to see more stuff like this in the future. Your videos are just as good now as they were years ago!

So.... I knew nothing about this film when I went to the Cinema. My wife wanted to see it for date night. We arrived at the theater only to be met by an evacuation. This delayed our entry by about 15 minutes so never saw the opening. Near the end of the film, prior to the home invasion, I remarked to my wife how Tarantino-esque the cinematography was to which she replied "Yeah, It's a Tarantino movie" I thought this was a fantastic film and most definitely one of, if not, his best and what made it even better for me was not knowing it was a QT film going so had no prior expectations. Pitt and DiCaprio were exceptional! ..my 2 cents worth anyway.

I wasn't very impressed by this film when I first saw it, I thought it had overly long dialogue scenes, I felt only Brad Pitt's scenes pushed the plot forward and that fictionalized Sharon Tate wasn't very flashed out as a character, but this review has given me another way of seeing the way she was handled, and for that I thank you =)

Same. I was entertained in the theaters for the movie but left feeling somewhat underwhelmed by it in retrospect. But this definitely makes me reconsider if I should watch it again with a new perspective.

Great to see a another video Sam. Also you once said you were going to do a video on how fandom has changed the blockbuster film industry. I think that would be a really introsting video.

Nice to you delve more into material outside of the super hero genre. Even better still to see this reviewed from a thematic pov, as opposed to a ball-by-ball format.

Apparently you uploaded another video prior to this yet somehow don't recall it popping up in my feed except for this one. But it's good to see you back again and tackling other types of films like you mentioned before.

Fantastic work as always Sam. Nothing defeats the power of cinema! My favourite Tarantino at his most meta. That montage where "Out Of Time" by the rolling stones plays with those neon signs lighting up I adore so much.

Wowowowow. Amazing review Sam! Absolutely on the nose! I admit when I first saw it it was a bit over my head with its more Coen brothers-esque restrained pacing, but after watching it again two months ago I understood why. Plus the allegories you made to today's current events was nothing short of fantastic. When it comes down to it, there really ain't nothin' like a good movie. I think this is why I'll be checking out Hail, Caesar again. Great review!!!!

Loved the movie. The only part I didn't like was the "film within a film western". The scene goes on way too long. Pitt was awesome. Dicaprio was very good. Loved how Sharon Tate was depicted. And the hippie chick was way sexy.

I prefer most of the other Tarantino movies more than this. I'd like to see Oliver Stone or somebody make a movie based on Tom O'Neill's book Chaos which explores the links between the CIA and Manson. The real story is much more interesting than the "Helter Skelter" theory reported uncritically at the time.

Hey Sam, how do you get the footage for these videos? Do you rip them from physical or digital media, or in some other way?
@SamsChannelOfficial

For this video, I managed to mostly get by on RU-vid clips that I downloaded, but nowadays I use an HDML Clonerbox Pro to capture most of my footage - it's essentially a digital recorder for anything going into the TV.

_"Yes!"_ What you say at 5:32 is precisely why I enjoyed the end of *_Once Upon a Time in Hollywood_* so much. Having known about her tragic murder all my life (occurring when I was only 2) it was quite cathartic to watch the alternate history. Sadly, while I am a Gen-Xer, and the slower pace of older films is something I'm used to and enjoy, I was utterly bored with this film. . .until that last act. I'm not sure if I should blame whatever it is that has reduced my attention span, be it *RU-vid* or the specific editing styles and overall presentation of modern media, but I feel this film could benefit from a second viewing. I thoroughly enjoyed your essay on this. You have definitely been missed. ••• Not that it matters, but I enjoyed seeing what looked to me to be a publicity shot at 7:57 for 1938's _"Holiday."_ It is an absolute favorite of mine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To an extent, do you think it would be accurate to say that Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is to the Manson family, what South Park’s “Osama Bin Laden Has Farty Pants” was to al-Quaeda? It sounds like both of them take a notorious tragedy that turned our culture upside down, then offer the viewer some catharsis by humorously making the people we feared into an object of light-hearted mockery. To also tie this back in with your older videos, it reminds me of how you explained why Spider-Man cracks jokes and insults at his opponents. Spider-Man’s gibes can both make it easier for the villains to lose their concentration, plus make him less scared of them so he can better maintain his own composure. You once said that it can become easier to not fold under fear, if you can find a way to make fun of the person trying to intimidate you, and that is often Peter Parker’s thinking.

What do you think Tarantino's last film will be? I bet it will be based around pre 9/11, and Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist legion are killed in awesome ways before the attacks.
