Welcome back! Today, let's dive into the technicality of the flat sketches in The Fashion Design Book. Imagine a spectrum of fashion sketches:
On one end, we have fashion illustrations. These are elongated, heavily stylized, and more artistic than technical.
On the opposite end, we have flat technical sketches used in the garment industry. These are detailed, with precise measurements, and are more proportional to the human body. They are typically black and white.
Now, where do the sketches in The Fashion Design Book fall on this scale? I'd say they are somewhere in the middle, leaning a bit towards the technical flat side. They are flat sketches, not full-on fashion illustrations.
Why didn't I go all-out technical with these sketches? The reason is that this book is designed to be a versatile tool. Many of you will use it to create concept designs, not just for technical flats. As you reference the book, you'll likely modify style details, add design lines, and mix and match garment parts. This flexibility means that overly technical details might not always be necessary.
For those who want to make their flat sketches more technical, you can always add those details in a tech pack sketch. But for home sewists and designers who use the book to help conceptualize their ideas, this level of detail is ideal.
Flat sketches that are too technical can be hard for some people to visualize. That's why I've included less-technical flats to help merchandisers, salespeople, and buyers better visualize the designs. Sometimes, a bit of styling, like slightly curved hems, lines indicating fullness or wrinkles, or even cuffed hems, can make a big difference in how a design is perceived.
You’ll also notice a bit of styling sprinkled throughout the book, making it a great reference for drawing fashion illustrations as well.
