Nikon asked me to take some time and test out the N-RAW image quality shot on the Nikon Z9 and see how it works within DaVinci Resolve. My thoughts: super impressive footage with lots of latitude.
So today I'll show you my workflow for testing new cameras, footage, and color grades when I'm deciding what camera to use for a project.
Hopefully this test of Nikon’s new camera will help you decide if it’s a camera worth looking into or even investing in.
Additonal info on testing footage from Nikon:
When checking the N-RAW image quality in DaVinci Resolve, go to the ‘Playback Settings’ screen on the software’s user settings screen.
Nikon recommends that you set ‘Performance Mode’ to ‘Disable’ or ‘Manual’ and uncheck ‘Optimize Decoding Quality’ before playing

Haha so I realized that I totally missed the CST for Nikon in Resolve. Sry bout that! This is still a great way to do it, but def check out the CST as you get more control over the output color space.

Just bought a Z8 for filming action, the 8K 30 12bit Nlog is sweet, very good to grade with. 45MP photos is stunning and loving the autofocus. This is a hybrid camera that can do it all. 4K 120 is good too.

Beginners tend to push grading too far and often don't know what broken footage looks like. This is a big help to me as someone new to this, and now I have an idea what to look for. Thanks!

Thanks, this is great! I use Nikon z6ii and I got the z8 when it came out. I just started video about a month ago and watch a few dozens of you tuturials ! From only using DaVinci to cut, put music and title, I can now use some nodes, having fun with the mask, planer tracker, transfrom nodes, etc. I need to focus on color grading. Thanks again !

Compared to your earlier videos, for some reason the vocals come in much lower now. I watch your videos while I work out and the most recent videos are difficult to hear even at max volume. The earlier videos tended to have better mastering and it came through clearer and louder even with a treadmill sound drowning out a portion of the volume.

Resolve colour managed has fully supported both NRaw and NLog since 17.1 (I think). Plus the CST is there.

As always, Casey, a great video, thank you. I've been looking at the Nikons, as an A1 user. I'm somewhat disheartened by Sony. That said, where they only LUTs to downscale to Rec.709? No HDR workflow.

how would you use log footage in fusion? for example I wanted to add a png or explosion/smoke vfx to my footage but when I do it the colors of the png / vfx just really pop compared to my log footage so I can't really color grade them realistically..

I always thought (perhaps wrong) that LUTs were just an easy shortcut and one should do manual grade for more control? That said should I use LUTs for footage like DJI and Lumix?

No you should def use a transform LUT or CST. Color management is the way for sure.

Does anyone else wonder why footage like this always looks awesome on YT videos like this, but when it cuts back to the host who is talking about colour grading, the footage of themselves looks washed out with the blacks? Like the Lift needs bringing down by about 0.3. Just not enough contrast and it's distracting, especially when most people seem to do it these days, as if you are all using the same LUT or CST which is incorrect for your footage.
