A brief description on the operation of the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Please note: There is an error in the explanation from 3:10 to 3:30. The correct explanation is:"Photons from the hollow cathode lamp are absorbed in the flame by the atoms of the element being examined. These atoms then emit identical photons but in a random direction so that the number going straight through from the lamp to the detector is reduced. The random emitted photons are not detected except for those which happen to be emitted in the original direction by chance." We apologise for this and will rectify this as soon as possible.

Nice video, However the atoms of intrest in the flame will absorb light from the hollow cathode tube, this will decrease the amout of light going to the photo multiplier. The decrease in light detection reguarding the sample compared to the amount of light detected with just the hollow cathode tube is converted to a measurable amount of absorption.

Very Good! But the student made an error while explaining the absorption of the lamp's light. That was actually the emission not the Absorption.

Great stuff apart from a little bit of confusion at 3:00 min - 3:15 min of the video. Photons from Mg emission in the flame are of no relevance to the analysis. This has been observed by a couple of commentators on this video. The student in the video could have explained better in terms of modulated transmitted (unabsorbed) radiation from the hollow cathode lamp versus unmodulated emissions from excited Mg atoms in the atomiser, other excited atoms, plus radiation from the atomiser itself. A supporting mention about the inverse relationship of absorbance and transmittance (Beer's Law) and role of the log amplifier would probably have completed the video perfectly.

i thought the detector was measuring the absence of light ie. the electrons absorb light, release it (in all directions) while returning to ground state and therefore there is less light reaching the detector.

Hey you got that explanation of the process all wrong! Extra light is Absorbance? I thought it was the other way around! Actually free state atoms created by the flame do absorb photons at the characteristic wavelengths (specific for the element under study) emitted by the lamps. However this causes a drop in intensity reaching the detector (compared to an unaffected "Reference" beam) and the drop in intensity is converted mathematically into an Absorbance value, proportional to concentration.

Can anybody tell me that, is it necessary for cathode to be made of the metal which is in the solution? If yes then why?
@vitalyl7962
@vitalyl7962 6 лет назад
Hello. I will assume correctly your question. To determine the element under investigation, it is necessary that your lamp (hollow cathode lamp) be of the same wavelength as the element you are exploring. To you for what purpose, tell me?
