How the airtrol boiler expansion tank fitting works

I take apart the fitting commonly used Bell and Gossett airtrol fitting that is attached to the bottom of the closed expansion tank used on older boiler systems.
This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. If you have suggestions or comments they are welcome.
If you are a homeowner looking to repair your own appliance, understand that the voltages can be lethal, the fuels are highly flammable and high pressures are used. Know your limits.

Thats correct! Their only purpose was to re-establish the air cushion in the EX tank similar to that of making sure you have the correct PSI in a Bladder type EX tank! The little brass tube was suppose to be cut to extent about 3/4 up into the tank to leave about a 1/4 air gap at the top. We used them in chilled water loops as well! They are more of a luxury than they are necssesity! If your sight glass was clear and not plugged and the brass tube wasn't clogged.....they worked great!😁💯

Thanks a lot for this video! I'm a total newbie to boilers. This helped me understand the ATF-12 in our basement, and how to get the expansion tank recharged.

Just reading "the shining", now I got the picture of you in my head in the basement reading old recipes and planning to plot Redrum.

Dude u are amazing. When you lifted that thing off and showed it split open like that the cutaway I hate to admit it but I got a little, well let's just say it was exciting. I really do love the business I'm in I do commercial heating and Air conditioning work and I've never known how these devices work.

I never realized the tank was part of the pressurized system. The valve going to this fitting on the tank was always closed on our boiler system. The pressure gauge on the boiler never exceeded 14psi though.

cool to see the inside of it

The ATF fitting stops air absorption from the air pocket in the tank back into the system, according to the B and G training class I took. Not sure why the video does not explain that.

Well, my experience is that it does not work. I have always had to refill tanks every 1 to 3 years. Thanks for the thoughts. GFM

grayfurnaceman I have one of these.. and an expansion tank in the rafters.. looks like 20 gal or so. My altitude gauge gets up to 25 psi from 14 when its working. Is that too high.. My B and G circ pump was rebuilt and the floors are warm. I am burping the air out and its settling down. Has a Beckett Honeywell, ten yrs old. Any help is welcomed. I wonder if I pull the air bleed valve out like you mentioned if that would lower the pressure or is it normal.. thanks

Another great video, one question. If you replace an old, steel expansion tank and Airtrol with a bladder expansion tank, do you need to install an Air Separator in the upper piping where they were removed? I want to install a ground sitting expansion tank.

Sounds like it's still a mystery to you. It's main purpose is to help prevent the air in the tank to be reabsorbed into the water
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 8 лет назад
+Glenn Hanson That does not make sense to me. The air is reabsorbed into the water by being in contact with the water, which it is in the tank regardless of the valve. GFM

+grayfurnaceman I do like your cutaway showing the guts to one of these. I'm betting that baffling is to prevent gravity circulation. The reason I saw you vid is that I have a boiler now piped without one of this PLUs downhill to the tank. At least once a year he loses all the air in his tank to the system. I'm just going to install an Extrol instead. Pretty darn good book. I traded Dan an ancient handbook for this. heatinghelp.com/systems-help-center/why-compression-tanks-waterlog/

It seems to me that you let air out as it gathers in the tank the stem maintains the fluid level in the tank I have two boilers with these on them that’s how I use them it seems to work I would like to see the official instructions for one. They still sell them new.

I have this fitting on my compression tank and when I turn my boiler on I hear a huge rattling from inside the compression tank. I think it is the copper tube banging around in the tank. Sounds like the tank is completely empty. Turn off the boiler and it instantly goes away. Ever seen that happen with this fitting?

I can't say I have. I would remove the airtrol and inspect/replace. GFM

@@grayfurnaceman I was wrong it was actually the B&g Flow Control valve that was right next to the tank. Turned the gravity feed setting back and forth and it went away. Thanks for the super helpful videos I've leaned a lot!

We see these devices these engineers put these in on dry coolers for computer room air conditioning equipment and liebert or now vertive they've never used these devices they just came into the bottom of the expansion tank and they had a side connection on it and that was it. When I first started out in the business when we went to go charge him we would make sure that the tank was about half full this would be on the labor units and then we were done we knew we had enough water in the system at that point in time. Dry coolers don't operate at the same temperatures they operate anywhere from 40° up to 110°

I don't understand how the small air fitting is supposed to "pressure up" the tank just by opening it and then opening a water drain on the other side of the tank.... Won't it only go to "zero" pressure and not to a negative pressure.... There seems to be a need for pressured air to enter the tank somehow.... Just my thoughts... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 9 лет назад
Jesse Pedroza You don't need pressure. Just drain the water out until the tank is full of air. When the water is turned on, the tank will pressurize. Hope this helps. GFM

I believe you know what you’re talking about most of the time but not this time. Just admit you don’t know what it does Or how works. When I take the little plug out air comes out of it like a tire that losses air & my PSI that was over 30 goes down. I would ask you if that’s the way it supposed to work but you seem to NOT know.

I'm not sure you fully understand how that air troll fitting works there's another fitting on the boiler that feeds air to the tank.
