Taylor Knights, a Melbourne-based architecture practice, tackled the challenge of bringing light into a narrow Victorian terrace in Fitzroy by flipping the typical layout. The design focuses on inverted living, with living spaces elevated for optimal light access. Nature intertwines throughout, with each level offering outdoor access and tree-filled planters. Craftsmanship and a timeless material palette elevate the interiors, fostering joy and connection within the home.

That staircase is a little piece of sculptural genius. Great job overall - I forgot there were no side windows as the curved roof surfaces and great angles and materials held all my attention and the overall impression was light and almost Mediterranean in feel.

This is the kind of architectural work that is worth whatever it costs. The architects simply transformed this ordinary house. The central kitchen space is superb. The way the light has been brought into the interior is superb. Fantastic architectural intervention.👍

A captivating video! I recently had my first visit to Fitzroy, and it was a fun experience. The juxtaposition of heritage buildings with modern extensions truly adds to the charm of the area. It's amazing how some of these architectural gems are so cleverly tucked away, adding an element of surprise to exploring the streets.

The perforated metal, board form concrete, exposed painted brick and the Victorian detail all nod to the broader Fitzroy neighborhood. The house looks awesome.

Beautiful light, dramatic space with compression and release and an excellent balance of grit versus refined through material use. Love it. How does the second bedroom work? I see if you arrive by car you have to pass through it.

Correct about the second bedroom, but that’s the owner’s bedroom. So the reality is guests wouldn’t be parking at the back and coming in that way.
