How the AUS v SA Edgbaston Tie Changed Cricket (4/25)

A frantic, misbegotten dash that set the tone for South Africa's future World Cups.
It was a photo finish of entirely the wrong kind when Lance Klusener met Allan Donald at the bowler's end while Adam Gilchrist broke the stumps on the striker's side to send South Africa home from the 1999 World Cup. The semi-final tie meant Australia advanced after finishing on a higher number of points, having beaten South Africa four days earlier in their Super Six face-off.

Australia were the best in 1999. But WInning the world cup elevated them and they would be too good up until Warne and McGrath retired in 2007. Australia 1999-2007 is possibly the best team in history.

"Ball 3 was a dot" Huge understatement. Donald nearly getting run out on ball 3 is what caused him to (rightfully) turn back to the crease on ball 4. All these years of "Donald forgot to run" memes but it was Klusener that choked. If Klusener hits it to a short straight mid-on that has fielder coverage in any other over or game, he wouldn't even take a single step down the pitch. This moment, he panics and charges down the pitch!

Neutral fan here (NZ). Really fortunate to have been alive to remember this match! This *was* the greatest ODI of all time! The 434/438 is the second greatest. The tie had absolutely everything in it. It was a World Cup semifinal between two titans, it was epic struggle from the beginning to the end with the momentum shifting innumerable times during the match. Not only were the two teams perfectly balanced, there was also perfect balance between bat and ball (rare to see these days). Best of all, it had the perfectly balanced ending in a tie. It is hard to imagine how this match can ever be bettered.
@bradantcliff2940
@bradantcliff2940 5 лет назад
How could you ignore the fact Paul Reifle DROPPED a catch off Mcgraths bowling that went for SIX and it was Kluesner off the last ball of the penultimate over!!!! And that Darren Lehman missed a simple run out of Donald backing up too far off the third ball of the last over which was why he was not backing up for the next ball. Donald gets all the blame for this but it was Kluesner who choked.
@hereticsign
@hereticsign 4 года назад

IMO, it was neither Kluesner nor Donald's fault. They just shouldn't have been put into a situation like this. It was the fault of SA's top and middle-order batsmen for failing to perform well enough.
@Prodigy_Fan
@Prodigy_Fan 2 года назад
Too right Klusener was to blame. There was never a single there and he panicked and then Donald did the same. Even if he'd stayed in his crease Klusener had another 2 balls to get the one run South Africa needed. He'd had a brilliant tournament up to then but he choked when his team needed him the most.

In my opinion it is one of the greatest innings ever of the modern era (comparable to Lara's 153*) just like all other Adam Gilchrist innings. I think you confused it with his 149 vs Sri Lanka in ODIs in the WC07 Final. I am not talking about that. This 149* was scored in his 2nd TEST match in 1999, pretty much kick started his career. @@DC-zi6se The 149* kickstarted his test career but he had already been playing ODI for the past 3 years. IMO he should have debuted in 1997, Gilly was introduced to the ODI squad in 1996 because of the pathetic batting of Ian Healy, the Keeper before Gilchrist. By then it was clear Healy was declining in test form as well, but he selfishly did everything he could to hold on to his test spot for 3 more years. Even as his form continued to worsen, the nail in the coffin was Dropping Lara in the match where he scored 153*. It got to the point where Healy was told behind closed doors he wouldn't have a spot in the team. Let him retire and not be dropped. He didn't ever play a farewell match.

As a kid I remember backing Australia to win the WC and remember that in order to win it they had to overcome SA twice. I only watch the AUS innings before I went to school and was worried that SA would win, but when my mom told me that AUS won by 1 run (match tied but AUS advanced because they beat SA in the Super Sixes) I was relieved. Looking back I honestly have no sympathy for SA as they depended too much on Lance Klusener to bail them out when they were on the verge of losing a game. Over dependence on Lance Klusener and ridiculous running with 2 balls to spare cost them a place in the WC final. Credit to Steve Waugh for not giving up even though Klusener bored the advertising hoarding twice.

most fantastic game of sport i've ever witnessed . i'm thankfull to the south africans for their contribution to the genius leadership of steve waugh. you forced the best out of him for us all to witness. i remember the commentator describing "zulu" batting at the time as "clubbing "the ball to the boundary. so it was all over ,THEN steve waugh took the pressure up even another notch by bringing the guys in who were guarding the boundary [one of the most insane or courageous and confident decisions i've witnessed [in his teams ability to not fold and take the pressure ] .the pressure went up so much the south africans couldn't think straight and they just suffered a huge metal meltdown . so don't be sorry south africa .you were instrumental in us seeing one of the greatest performances ever by a team that could build the pressure on the opposing team ,consistently ,like no other team i've seen except the aussie girls hockey team under rachel hawks and coach ric charlesworth. "Ball 3 was a dot" What?!!?!?!?!?! Are you serious? Did you watch the last over? Ball 3 was ALMOST a run out! The entire final ball played out BECAUSE of what happened on ball 3. Donald took off for a run which wasn't there and was sent back. Lehmann had a shot at the stumps and missed. Had he hit, it was game over. The Aussies thought they'd missed their one chance. The chaos and pressure caused by that moment is what caused Klusener to just hit it and run the next ball, and Donald to panic and turn back rather than keep running. To have a 7 minute video about this match and to dismiss ball 3 so carelessly is just wrong.

In the video they say South Africa had been a dominant side in that tournament, this wasn’t entirely true because in most of South Africa’s matches that World Cup they had to chase and in most of those chases South Africa needed 100 or so runs by the 30-35 overs and they would be 5 or 6 wickets down at that point, and then Lance Klusener would perform the magic and win South Africa the match. Alas, this was the match he despite his best efforts was unable to win them.

These kind of finishes take place only in low scoring encounters with something in it for the bowlers. With the kind of pitches being made now it is a boring encounter without any competition between bat and ball.

It's unfortunate how many people claim that they don't enjoy watching cricket any more using the false excuse you are just using. Games aren't much more high scoring any more. A blip of high scoring games between 2012-2015 has made people conveniently turn a blind eye to reality. The power play changes of 2015 brought down the frequency of 300+ score back to what it was earlier.

OMG THEY KILLED KENNY! I meant the frequency of low scoring games have considerably gone down. Pitches are prepared with much lesser help for bowlers. White ball swings less and if there is no swing or seam ,its only favouring batting big time.see how many 300 plus scores are scored in England and Australia more now where previously it was previously bowling friendly. Also only under tough bowling conditions, the art of batting will be really tested like what we saw in this game.

@@ayyappalaksh2290 you will find plenty of low scoring games even today. While some pitches have transformed to be batting friendly, some have also actually turned far more difficult for batsmen. See the Chinnaswamy and Wankhede for examples. Till 2015-2016, they used to be a batsman's paradise. 200+ every T20 game. At Chinnaswamy, we played out 4 innings between us and the Aussies in early 2017, with scores about and below 250. Even the T20 games there are testament, with scores below 170. Same with the Wankhede, which is still batting friendly, but scores have generally come down.

@Raas Putin still, the players are much much better than ever before. Exponentially grown better than the 90s and early 2000s

@Raas Putin tell that to Tendulkar, the guy with the biggest bat. Small boundaries? Yeah, Brabourne used to host matches earlier, shifted to Wankhede, a much bigger ground and now to DY Patil, a much much bigger ground. All the new grounds built in India are much bigger than the grounds used till 10 years back, so don't make up stories. Who stopped previous players from using big bats? Tendulkar did it, he had an even bigger bat than those used today. They were just not fit or capable enough to handling big bats, period.

There's an error here - it was not the fourth ball where the wicket fell. It was the fifth ball. On the fourth ball they are nearly run-out by Darren Lehmann who missed a short throw he would normally expect to hit with. This added more drama and tension to the scene. It appeared the Aussies had been given one final chance & blown it. As if South Africa will offer up another opportunity! 😁 Honestly ESPN; important to get these things right.

It's the 4th. First two are 4s by Klusener. 3rd ball is the missed run out by Lehmann. 4th ball is the run out.

South Africa in cricket is like the Netherlands in football...a great team without a World Cup !!! By the way, if the D/L Method existed at that time, would it be used? And what is the result?
