This is a story of a bouncer
It starts from the 1975 west Indian tour of Australia
It was right at the steps of the 1975 world cup
And it was being labelled as the champion bout
On hand we had Clive Lloyds along with his young bucks including Vivian Richards and Gordon Greenridge
While the other had the legendry line-up of Thomson Dennis Lillie and the chapel brothers
They were hands down the best 2 teams in the world
And this series was gone decide the champion
Well
It could have
But Australians armed with the bouncer made quick short work of the calypso style of cricket
The entire west Indian line-up was so bruised with the 5-1 thrashing
That after returning home they even lost a series to India in the port of Spain
Failing to defend a target of 400
And so the captain Clive Lloyds decided to shift to an all pace line-up
Which in time became the terrifying pace attack that dominated world cricket for 2 straight decades
And while that pace attack wqas maturing
The master blaster viv Richards…himself started perfecting his persona
His attitude
His swagger
His image
In time becoming the Symbol of west Indian cricket
And then
As for the preparation of the 1979 world cup
West Indians once again visited Australia
This time armed with the fearsome foursome
Michael Holding, Colin Croft, Andy Roberts and Joel Garner
Who in matter similar to the Australians 4 years back
Went on to destroy the Australian line-up with their bouncers
But
While this tit for tat was going on
In came a hit to Viv Richards head
And the psychological tactics that went in after that
They for all intent and purposes
Shaped what was to soon come
This is a story of revenge of comeuppance of thrilling finish and lessons learnt
This a story of the birth of a dynasty
This is a story of a bouncer

Actually more than Viv, Clive Loyed was more devastating and punishing to the Australian fast bowlers. But more than his batting he was famous for his captaincy. In 1976 actually WI had very good spinners and fast bowlers couldn't do good against even Indians. But still on Fifth test he put his captaincy, even his place in the team on edge and kicked out all spinners from WI team ( including his own cousin Lance Gibbs), and went with those 4 inexperienced fast bowlers and directed them only to bowl fast. That was a watershed moment of a captain's life ever in the history of Cricket. No other captain in history took such a courageous decision ever... *And rest is history* ....

Richards did face Garner, Daniel, Holding, Marshall,Patterson,Walsh and some lesser known fast bowlers over the years in WI domestic cricket. Rather sorry to say that he didn't have a great record against them and batsmen like Gavaskar, Gooch, Wessels, Lamb,Border had far better average than him when it came to facing the four fast bowlers of WI with any combination. Richards never faced 4 dreaded WI fast bowlers together and even then his average against 2 or 3 of them together was much less than that of his famous contemporaries who have been mentioned above. Kapil Dev, Hadlee and Imran Khan also dismissed him cheaply a number of times. How many sixes did Richards hit of the bowling of these 3 bowlers? It was the overall strength of the WI team that paved the way. Many instances when Richards failed with the bat and the West Indies still won those tests and ODI's due to the efforts of other team members.

Thanks for making this. Although I remember how dominant the West Indies were for so long and remember their inaugural World Cup win, I just assumed that their rise to the top had started around the time of that victory and continued uninterrupted. Their heavy defeat in Australia following the World Cup had completely slipped under my radar.

You tell the story well I watched that awesome foursome as a kid. I played rep cricket in 80’s no helmets it’s hard to explain to those now wearing helmets how mentally fatiguing high quality fast bowling was to face over after over. The 4 were all great bowlers wonder how well they would go now, one major issue was under 10 overs per hour. For Malcom M who came later was the best of them and the one who would have dominated even today.

Yes in 1975 Australia was intimidating but led by the genius of Clive Lloyd, they turned the tables on Australia and world cricket. Their fast bowlers were incredibly intimidating and dangerous as Australia found out especially when playing on the Perth wicket. As Alan Border once said, theirctop bowler has a spell and another just as fast takes his place. A relentless attack. And Richards? He was phenomenal.

Whoever you are, the bouncer were first introduced in the infamous Bodyline series between Australia and England way back in 1930's. when Australia were on the other end. But having said that, Sir Viv Richards was the greatest batsman of all eras. he cleared boundaries in SCG and MCG when there were no ropes around the boundary line
@agbeagbe7772
@agbeagbe7772 Год назад
Incorrect. Bouncers had been used by fast bowlers ever since overarm bowling was legalised in the 1850s. And 'Bodyline' - the dreaded combination of bouncers with 'leg theory' , where you have a packed close leg side field - had also been seen in cricket before. It was often used on flat pitches in county cricket in England in the 1920s. The Nottinghamshire captain A.W. Carr, for example, was famous for deploying it in the 1920s, so Sussex player and future England 'Bodyline 'captain Jardine would have seen it often. In fact, Bradman was famously subjected to a bouncer barrage in a Australia match against Notts,I think, who had Larwood and Voce, the future Bodyline series opening bowlers, in the previous 1930 tour. This first gave English players the feeling that Bradman didn't like the short ball. So you're mistaken.
@chetia666
@chetia666 Год назад
@@agbeagbe7772 I cant disagree with those facts but the fact still is that Sir Viv Richards, cleared fields on SCG and MCG when the boundaries were not shortened, for the gallery. Cricket is the only sports where apart from the 22 yards pitch, the ground has no real kind of measurement, in terms of rules or shape. But having said that, one of the reasons why a lot of sixes are being hit is mainly due to the quality of the willows which have been scientifically advanced. Not in older times when one has to knock those bats over a period of time. Nowadays one gets bats which has sweet spot all over them. And further more, during present times since the boundaries are shortened considerably, the batsman knows one good miss hit will clear boundaries. The primary observation was about *Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards*
