It's interesting how this is made of 168 steel plates welded together, yet they are polished so well and the craftsmanship is so good that there are no visible seams now.

I remember when the bean was first unveiled, it had rivets visible at all the seams.

I think what you saw was tack welds, generally the seams are tacked every so often so the panels can be aligned flush with each other before final welding.

Those weren't rivets. We tacked welded the panels together. Then the finish welding and polishing came after revealing it to the public for the remainder of the summer.
