How The Bengals Changed the NFL

In this video, we go back to 2021 when the Bengals just finished their season 4-11-1 and hold the number 5 pick in the NFL draft.
Last season they drafted Joe Burrow 1 overall and after his promising rookie campaign ended early due to injury the Bengals are looking in the draft for the missing piece to improve their team.
Options:
Penni Sewell
Ja'Marr Chase
But who did the Bengals Draft?
They picked Ja'Marr Chase to pair with his old teammate Joe Burrow. This choice helped propel the Bengals to the Super Bowl in extremely unlikely circumstances.
The trend the Bengals started was
--Invest top resources into a difference-making top 10 wide receiver
--Pair them with another top 30 receiver where both can’t be doubled
--Create plays where the receivers have yards after catch opportunities
--Plan for the QB to pass the ball quickly to get it into the receiver's hands
Teams who followed this trend were:
Miami Dolphins
Philadelphia Eagles

“They coached Burrow to get the ball out faster” Burrow had to get the ball out faster because the oline wasn’t great and gave him almost no time in the pocket. He was literally the most sacked quarterback. Joe Burrow’s talent and resilience is what made their run possible.

What makes the bengals so effective is that Chase is gives you that YAC ability due to his speed and agility--he is a complete package as a WR--but the Bengals also have two large posession receivers who can come down with contested catches. So if Chase isn't open you have two sure handed targets that increase your chances of success on any given play.

The Vikings did something similar as well late this season (2022). They traded for JJ 2 years ago, as a top 5 receiver, and now slotting Hockenson and Thielen together later this season. They haven’t prioritized OL and that’s where Counsins’ problems have arised in terms of the no. of times he’s sacked. All the Vikings must do for 2023 is either strengthen OL to give Counsins more time in the pocket as he is pathetic when scrambling, and requires more time to develop the play, or, inquire into a new rookie superstar QB like Burrow potentially from the free-agency or later draft rounds. + The Vikings defensive coaching staff and roster need a re-adjustment. What let the Vikings down in the Playoffs against a team they had beat 2 weeks before, was their inability to contain a rushing QB. They can’t shut down opposing offenses and are always upsetting games for their offense. For example, the colts in week 15 I believe, by half time it was 33 - 3!!! A massive defensive blunder against the 3rd worst rated team in the league. We were so damn lucky to be able to get back into the game and win, but can’t happen for a Super Bowl contending team. Go Vikes + Bengals in 2023.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Tyler Boyd, arguably the best slot in the game. If safeties go deep against Tee and Jamar, Burrow will throw it to Boyd in the middle who can also get YAC. Didn't the chiefs in 2018 have one of the worst defenses that year and still made it the AFC championship game?

I'm an LSU fan. 2019 LSU's oline won Moore award for best oline. Too be honest they weren't the reason they got that award.....

The bengals haven’t changed anything, their O line will once again fail. We all saw them get crushed by the Rams in Super Bowl 56

When you pass on every down, your QB can run and when you do run, it's out of the spread, then really you don't need to invest in the Oline

Lol, he’s already blown an acl due to his line not protecting him and he’s been hit more that a majority of NFL quarterbacks this year. He’s lucky to not have had another season ending injury at this point. It’s just a matter of time if they don’t commit to improving their o line.
