1 thing to add... I forgot to mention "the worst draft class in recent memory by a specific team". That honor goes to the Tennessee Titans in 2013, which scored a -108.2 CAVOE according to ESPN. 1st Rd- Chance Warmack OL (bad pick in a bad year... started 3 years before becoming backup) 2nd Rd- Justin Hunter WR (career backup... never reached 500 yards in a season) 3rd Rd- Blidi Wreh-Wilson DB (spent 3 years with Titans before being waived) 3rd Rd #2- Zaviar Gooden LB (2 years with Titans before also being waived) 4th Rd- Brian Schwenke C (best value pick... 2 yr starter and played 5 seasons in Tennessee) 5th Rd- Lavar Edwards DE (1 year with Titans before waived) 6th Rd- Khalid Wooten DB (lasted 1 year in NFL... 3 total games) 7th Rd- Daimion Stafford DB (4 year backup in Tennessee)

The Jet's general incompetence probably contributed to their low score also. For some of these cases, it probably isn't that the front office wildly misjudged a rookie's talent but that the coaching staff weren't able to develop/utilize them well enough.

Look to their division for the answer, the Pates; have(had) a system to get the most out of mostly no name individuals that were drafted to fit into that system, getting free agents that fit the mold as well. We're finding out that one player was the catalyst, but they had the most ridiculous run in the Super Bowl era history. Looks like it's the Chiefs turn now. The Jets haven't had much of a standard, system or identity that I can recall, other than Ryan's brief stint.

I mean... a LOT of those early round draft picks that usually guarantee high AV and should have undeniable physical talents to be traded later if you can't develop them properly went into QBs - the very position where players need the most technical development and are dependent on surrounding cast and general offense, if they don't make it in the first year of play, they are labelled busts and super hard to trade on - that rarely happens to defensive or offensive line 'slot' players whose physical talent can shine even under bad coaching and who can often be traded even if they don't perform too well initially

Fun fact (about good draft picks): During the 3rd Round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Philadelphia’s GM Howie Roseman wanted to trade up and select Russell Wilson, but his power was far from absolute, and he couldn’t get it done. Afterwards Roseman said, that if another QB with Wilson’s upside was still within reach on Day 2, he would take him even if it didn’t make sense on paper. Enter Jalen Hurts.
@eaglesdude25

Drafting is one thing, but coaching and organization are hugely important factors in a players' success. A strong organization can help a talented player reach his potential. Take a guy like Travis Kelce, for example, who had maturity question marks coming out of college. Put him on NY Jets with a defensive minded head coach and close to Manhattan and I think his career goes very differently. I use Andy Reid as a prime example of a coach being able to handle guys with off the field questions. Pete Carroll is very similar in that regard. Mike Tomlin also comes to mind. I think that's why these teams tend to "draft well".

It goes to show you how important the organization is. And it goes beyond drafting the right players, but developing that talent. Consider that the Jets drafted Geno Smith early in the second round of the 2013 draft. Seattle picks him up after the Jets failed with him. Last year Seattle traded Russell for a boatload of picks and Smith goes on to take the Hawks to the playoffs.

I think the biggest problem for Dallas is Jones, but its not culture based. Its because he hires terrible coaches. Garret, McCarthy, these guys aren't in the top 1000 people I would want coaching my NFL team. Than they luck into a pretty good OC in Moore and they blame him lol. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but Dallas is going to be worse this year than last year and it has nothing to do with the talent on the field, they have a really talented team. It has to do with lack of talent on the sidelines.

@@nicholasjohn898 Those picks were pretty bad. 1) Ruggs was the outlier -- no one could've predicted that terrible incident. 2) Jacobs was a solid pick. Too bad he'll walk, which is modus-operandi for the Raiders -- as soon as they develop a stud, they refuse to pay him. 3) Ferrell was a bad pick, but in fairness, everyone else at that position hasn't done much better. Ed Oliver looks to be a one-bit player; Josh Allen (DL, not QB) is about the same; Devin White had a solid rookie year but hasn't produced much since. 4) Abram showed flashes but was too undisciplined and injury-prone. Early on, I wanted him converted to LB (since was better vs run than coverage) but seemed unwilling to make the switch. That was the kiss of death for him. 5) Arnette was just trash. Remember, in 1974 the Pittsburgh Steelers drafedt HOF WR Lynn Swann (1st Rnd, Pick 21), HOF LB Jack Lambert (2nd Rnd, Pick 46), HOF WR John Stallworth (4th Rnd, Pick 82) and HOF C Mike Webster (5th Rnd, Pick 125). On top of all that, Pittsburgh added HOF S Donnie Shell (Undrafted FA) after the draft. Those five men all played key rolls in the Steelers four titles in the 70s. I would also note that they signed TE Randy Grossman as an undrafted FA after that draft too, and he also was on all four of those SB teams. So that offseason the Steelers added six rookies that won four SBs each and Five of them were inducted to the Hall of Fame. I'm not even a Pittsburgh fan, but that is going to be hard for any team to even match, let alone beat.

Most of us are convinced our GM would have drafted Drake London over Garrett Wilson if given the chance (Thanks Atlanta!). At the end of the day, everything goes back to a meaningless Week 17 win to knock the Pats out of the playoffs, costing us a chance at drafting Matt Ryan (Curse you Atlanta!). Instead, we got a year of Favre, Mark Sanchez, and a whole decade of piss poor QB play on top of the other draft misfires.

I'm a Jets fan since 1990 and this is mostly correct. I think where you are not really correct is that fans aren't saying players are busts. The Jets have done 2 things poorly. Drafted for potential in Quinton Coples, Steven Hill, Mekhi Becton, Zach Wilson, often getting height/weight/speed guys with potential, over guys that were just flat out productive. The other thing they do poorly is switch regimes constantly, resulting in different draft philosophy every 3 years meaning they've had to gut the team and trade the players to fit a different coaching style. I'm hoping for continuity by keeping Joe Douglas and Robert Salah for years to come.

Drafting and player development go hand and hand. If there is no infrastructure in place it is difficult for young players to succeed. Were the players really that bad? Or was it the organization that failed them? This question is not targeted at zach wilson for obvious reasons. AV, in general, is subjective. The preformance of a player is impacted by others. In a bad organization everyone looks worse. Also comparing the number 1 overall pick to the 32nd is not a fair way to attribute draft value. You get a stud left tackle at number 1, obviously the AV will be higher than a starting caliber MLB at 32. The team picking at 32 would have picked that tackle too. It is far easier to just count how many starters teams get from a draft. How many games played, how many probowls, how many all pros.
