Earlier today, I signed up for a 1 hour talk by Zach Bush, MD titled The Protein Myth. I ended up signing out with 15 mins left as he was saying that we're overeating protein and we should get our protein from plant foods 🤦. I'd love to have Dr Neiman and Dr Bush in the same room to debate the science.
If you read Dr. Naiman's book, he indicates that humans can eat a vegan diet just fine, so long as they select higher PE foods, such as nutrient dense green vegetables and high enough PE beans and grains, such as soybeans, lentils and so on. It is the killer combination of processed fats and carbs (donuts!) that kills. whole plant foods, beans, seeds, and some nuts are relatively high in PE ratios... I am trying to work out such a diet for.myself...plant foods except for a small amount of animal foods to.get fat soluble vitamins...
Amazing that this has such a low view count. It should be 3.1 Billion. You won't get a better explanation of the science, the origin of our current problems and the solution in less than 30 minutes. Watch every minute of it. Thanks Dr. Ted. You killed it!
I am saving this video to have my patients watch, as it is the best description I have seen of how our macronutrients influence and affect our bodies. Truly well done.
I remember being told, so long ago, in my youth that one should not eat too much protein because you could starve to death on a diet of high protein. LITERALLY told as a young teenager that one could STARVE TO DEATH on protein. This was back in the early 1980's. 40 years later I'm just now starting to shake off the brainwashing of those and other similar words... all thanks to these awesome low carb, high protein/high fat pioneers! We live in very strange and often amazing times!
@@erick7brian yes, rabbit starvation is real. But it's not because the the rabbits are so high in protein it's because they are so lean. So there is very little fat. So it really shouldn't be called rabbit starvation it should be called energy macro deprivation starvation.. But I think it's pretty obvious that whoever told him that you would starve to death on protein they weren't making informed decision about energy macros or rather starvation It was probably just some BS they heard from vegan activists.
Rather than having an opinion on one of the food groups ie protein, concentrate on nutrition, health is caused by cell nutrition, some probably a lot of unexplained disease is caused by cell poisoning by over indulgence on grains , protein including plant protein, processed foods and in a lot of cases dairy, not because dairy is excessively unhealthy but because mass produced dairy may contain man made chemicals used in farming practise. There is a lot of misinformation to sift through on the internet but the good thing is the answers to health are available. Just avoid the poisons labeled as food and eat mainly starch, baked potatoes are really good for health, lots of vit. C and fibre as well in them, they are satisfying, seeds and some nuts if you are not allergic, legumes such as peanuts and peas, avoid most oils, no deep frying and stick to olive oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil, sesame oil , peanut oil, stay away from all vegetable oils , grape seed oil etc. Good luck I hope this leads to better health.
Lady J Yes... I was lied to early on as i tried to be super healthy, was vegetarian for 40 years, reading all the health publications that leaned toward my chosen diet. Many years later i grew a giant tumor in my throat that would not stop growing. I changed my diet and exercise regime but it was too late, could not stop bleeding and growth. Led me to get chemo and radiation to save my life. Now i know more and am once again healthy. Almost no veggies or fruit, almost zero grains/potatoes. I am healthy now and will stay strong as long as i can. A great mentor and personal trainer (very smart man) has guided me away from vegetarian lifestyle.

What a tremendous talk ! He delivers profound insights so matter-of-fact-ly that people could not realize how valuable they are. Thank you, greatly, Dr. Naiman !
This is extremely helpful for folks including myself. I am usually the one who goes for carbs like chips, diet soda, cakes and fries and not enough meat to along with it. Lots of salt if you will. And that's not good. I like this video my doctor before he retired recommended this for me, so thanks to my doctor and thanks to the man who made this video.
@@southpawhammer8644 I agree! I have never been on a vegan diet nor been interested in it, and I regularly get recommended vegan youtubers and interviews with pro vegan doctors. It’s unbelievable the push for veganism (including their fake meat!🤢)
@@southpawhammer8644 exactly! My sister is a vegan, and I remember the first time she brought the fake meat to my house, and I read the ingredients -totally gross! The texture of it was so weird. There were little rubbery bands inside of it that looked like circular worms. 🤢
This talk right here should be in every curriculum at school in every country. Vegans should watch it to learn that the emotional story they have been susceptible to is just not true. Why are people still saying that protein is bad? What is their agenda?
The 1970s food pyramid was upside down. How did they get it so wrong? General Foods and others like them did small studies that gave them the results they wanted. Cheap carbs are more lucrative.
@@gkimunge You really need to think more before posting. We did quite well without cheap carbs for 100s of thousands of years. Now we poison our soils with Roundup and cheap fertilizers to produce millions of acres of corn and wheat based junk food. Green & red veggies, berries, beef, poultry, pork, eggs, and fish will keep our appetites under control.
The most important basic discussion on food and nutrients that every human should see as a child so they understood how food works. Yet only a small percentage of people know this which is why everyone is walking around with a bloated gut and fat belly.
Cutting carbs in our diet, as he says, is important, but he never mentions what is so bad about carbs. Insulin. We need to lower the insulin and insulin resistance in our bodies. Insulin prevents the burning of fat that has been stored in the body. Until you adequately lower the insulin levels, you won’t be able to burn your energy stored as fat. That’s why low carb is so important. Carbs raise insulin. Insulin prevents the burning of fat. I don’t remember him ever mentioning the word insulin which is key in metabolic health and the “metabolic syndrome”.
he says its all about the protein to energy ratio, cause protein also raise insulin a little, not like carbs, but also raises. and people even eating high protein are still lean.
Not true, can find it in potato skins, mushrooms... even river water. These days, the only reason ppl get B12 from meats is because their feed is fortified with it lol.
@@chrismoore1372 all food causes oxidization on our body. Meat is not immune to that. The more you cook meat, the more oxidation there is. But I trust unrendered fat most>rendered fats >processed oils in how they oxidize when cooked too. But being in ketosis helps balance the oxidation equation by avoidance of other oxidizers and allowing the body to process and absorb the foods more easily.. Low insulin states initiate more cleanup/autophagy :)
I think the “don’t eat fats and carbs together” is the key to all this. You can eat all carbs and lose weight as long as it’s low fat. Also it’s healthier because you avoid all the heart disease and cancer caused my meat and dairy. Still a fascinating talk though. ❤️
Soy is considered a complete protein because it contains all the essential amino acids that the human body needs. Essential amino acids are those that our bodies cannot produce and must be obtained through our diet. Soybeans and soy products, such as tofu, tempeh, and soy milk, are rich sources of protein and contain all nine essential amino acids in adequate amounts. These essential amino acids include histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. It's worth noting that the amino acid profile of soy is similar to that of animal proteins. However, some experts suggest that soy protein may be slightly lower in methionine compared to some animal sources. Nevertheless, this can be compensated by consuming other protein sources that are rich in methionine, such as grains, seeds, nuts, and other legumes. Including a variety of protein sources in your diet ensures that you receive an adequate balance of amino acids. Therefore, while soy can provide a substantial amount of essential amino acids, it's generally recommended to have a diverse and well-rounded diet to meet all your nutritional needs.
Plant proteins are not complete, and they are also not biologically available for human digestion and absorption and are contra indicated to human health and wellbeing.

26:15 If you don’t eat mostly protein, you will still be mostly protein; and if you eat a shîte ton of protein, you will be most energy (by which he presumably means adipose), so his closing statement is just objectively false.
Excess amounts of protein will be reduced to glucose in the liver (gluconeogenesis) to provide immediate energy, used to replenish glycogen for later use, or stored as fat for later use. The order depends on ones metabolic health and status of specific hormone levels, with the big ones being insulin and glucagon. In short, there is no limit per say.
I accidentally sent before I was finished. His emphasized protein. You will die without enough protein. It is so important. But the key thing you must keep in mind if you want a healthy body is how imortant it is to avoid high insulin which causes the biggest enemy to you metabolic health, insulin resistance. insulin over dose, and the subsequent insulin resistance is the cause of the problems, not lack of protein. The insulin problem is caused by carbs overdose. Yes, protein is important, but the real problem is too much carbs raising the insulin. Do not under dose your protein, too. It is also important.
High fat and high carb isn’t the issue it’s overeating calories. Processed foods play a role in overeating due to being hyper palatable. but But not all fats and carbs promote overeating. Eat lentils and almonds and it will be hard to overeat Whole grains and carb sources are fine with fibre. This protein obsession is not right we should focus on getting enough protein yeah but more on getting lots of fibre.
Great dialogue and loved the information. Food for thought. Carbohydrates and or fats…. Not all plants. Fats naturally come from meats. So not all of your energy comes from plants. That statement is incorrect. GLYCOGEN IS LIKE FAST-BURNING TINDER, FATS are long burning. You don’t need to eat glucose… your body makes it, glycogen storage creates fat in the body. You mentioned that carnivores were lean. Fat does not just put fat in your body. They are energy and will help release fats for energy by keeping the insulin low. Once we increase the insulin, we store fat. The carbon and nitrogen cycle is so essential.
@@tinkudada5553 some plants... olives, some seeds. However, when oils are not pressed, but extracted with high temperatures, solvents, detergents, and other... then, these plant oils damage the mitochondria and do more harm than good.
Okay, Atkins. I don’t know if I’m metabolically broken but protein doesn’t satiate me. Trying carnivore and it’s okay. Added protein shakes. Protein shakes with water, I’m starving. So I’m adding unsweetened almond milk, splash heavy cream, but I’m struggling to lose weight.
you need abundant amounts of energy to tell your body and its metabolism that we got food, its all good....let er rip. so keep eating that protein at id try 30-40% and try to receive plenty of energy from fat, basically the rest. I would only add small amounts of carbs doing hard efforts as a trial once you get the other part straight.
Carb addiction will do that. It will take some time but if you stick with it, you will break the addiction and your body will stop “demanding” all of those carbs you think you need.
Well don't eat protein alone! What animal does the protein shake come from? Protein in an animal comes with fats in most animals we eat so you need to try to simulate that balance in a protein shake..or try eating real food instead of liquid protein. Protein is not the energy so if you only drank shakes and were in ketosis, youll get lean and will be hungry if youre thin. If youre obese and did the same thing, youd have more fat to burn for energy and will make up the difference just like with fasting...but you need to eat energy to let your body know you're feeding it. So I never recommend less than 60g fat/day on ketogenic diet for a female and higher for men..BARE MIN. Your protein shakes are 100% insulin spiking. If youre using them as snacks inbetween meals youre spiking your blood sugar every time which is not what you want with weight loss. Id suggest only putting food in your mouth in any form, 2x a day and no more. Eat meats with natural fats, eat some veggies if you want with a tbsp or 2 of fat. Eat in a 6 to 8 hr window of eating and fast the rest. If youre addicted to carbs go see dr cywes videos. Get them out of your life! Id also never eat liquid food when you have a weight problem. It isnt as satiating than sitting down and eating a steak and encourages you to not think about the food you eat. Think, plan, follow through!
Because, veganism is all about saving animal life, regardless of hurting human life. That's the vegan movements purpose. They're so corrupt. To convince people to go vegan, now, they're pulling the "environmental card". Which is bs! They're a very powerful, well funded, and Leftist group. There are so many vegans that cheat, too, and so many that turn away from it. Yet, the vegan authorities say, "you're not doing it right", or "you're still detoxing"...lol! India is the country with the most diabetics, and many are vegan for religious reasons. They worship cows, instead of eating them, too. That country is a bold statement against veganism.
30% protein? Why? I eat PKD and workout. I eat 120 gr protein a day and about 250 grams of fat. Never get cravings )) I'm full for 8 hours. Don't have any stomach issues. Build muscles. And if I only overeat protein and undereat fat i become hungry much much faster and I have to eat more, dear Ted. Too little protein - no problem, that's bad. But 30% for me is more that 200 grams, eating which i have diarrhea and bloating and also i gain fat, because excessive aminoacids burns just like as glucose and that disrupts fat burning. Anyways, great talk, as always
These are good points that most don't realize. Once you are close to your genetic potential for lean tissue, you accrue muscle very slowly and cannot utilize 2-3 g/kg for MPS. Metabolically it is not a good idea to constantly have upregulated MTORC pathways for longterm health
@@randyalanjones it means u have some insulin resistance. Protein higher-ups glucagon and it stimulates your liver to release glucose. Normally insulin counteracts the effect, but it fail if there is IR

Religion is always funny, as it is to watch different nutrition priests and their followers each preaching their good vs evil story; meanwhile the 110-year-old simpleton grannies are demonically laughing to their graves.
I challenge the analysis here: Many herbivores in the wild state (Any one that has eaten wild rabbits, to hunted elk, etc) Or seen what grass fed beaf actually looks like knows that the they are so lean as to be problematic from an energy density standpoint for human consumption. Carnivores do not maintain lower body fat ratios than wild herbivores. The protein to energy ratio of green leafy plants is higher than meat. A horse with all its muscle or a buffalo, make all this lean tissue with only plants. This is a proof of concept for vertebrates.
I'm just starting on this video, but judging from what I've seen of Dr. Naiman, he argues humans maintain a lower BF% with higher protein consumption, as per the protein leverage framework, because human bodies have a preference for protein, not that all carnivores, omnivores, or any other other animals do. His focus is human obesity, not obesity in dogs. The protein energy ratio of leafy plants is higher than it is for meats? Geez, have you every watched any nature survival reality show with vegans? They usually dont make the entire stretch due to poor health issues related to low energy intake, if they dont tap out themselves, and if they don't they holdup laying on their backs for most of the outing. That's not exactly thriving. Besides I got a database of nutrional data on foods and never noticed my lettuce contains more kcal than say chicken breast. Lets see. I'll check. As per my records, lettuce has a 0.2 kcal per gram, while skinless chicken breast contains 1.6 kcal per gram of weight, so I don't see how you think leafy greens are more calorically dense.
@@boxerfencer Protein to energy ratio, not protein per gram. As for the rest of your comment, I have little hope of persuasion from rational argument, when you prefer to comment before watching the video...
@@robertos4172 yeah the specs I put up are kcal to gram, and although accurate and not protein to gram you thought I referred to, they don't address your claim that leafy greens contain a higher protein to energy ratio than that of meat . Good thing I have specs on that too. Let's have a look. Lettuce has a protein to kcal of 8.6%, while skinless chicken breast is 20.4%. There's nothing left to interperate there. Lettuce does not have a higher protein to kcal than that of chicken. Just so you dont think i cherry picked those two items, Im happy to check any other food items i have on record for you. I watched the entire talk now, and did notice the doc perhaps made an over arching claim, that being higher predators are always leaner. Is that the point you contest? A higher protein diet makes for a higher thermogenic effect, and as per multiple studies done by dr. Antonio and confirmed by others, such as Dr. Campbell, leading to leaner body fat levels, at least in humans. It may not carry over to all warm blooded predators, for who knows why, so in this the presenter may be wrong, but as far as humans are involved, a higher protein intake improves body composition.
@@boxerfencer Brother you have serious comprehension issues. I responded to your first post about the higher caloric density per gram, by explaining (again) that my statement concerned protein to energy not protein to gram since you clearly did not appreciate the distinction, and retorted with something irrelevant. We are starch eating animals, we never have protein deficiency on a starch diet. Agriculture started the over indulgence of carbohydrates, which has caused the majority of inflammatory diseases, wheat, rice, sugar equals processed ‘food’ and fibre deficiency which equals disease. Refined Carbohydrates are also the culprit of dental disease. We stop eating when we have enough starch, fibre and nutrition. This talk is a mix of truth and mostly misinformation to increase protein sales. Too much protein causes kidney infection/disease plus more. @@LTPottenger We are not in nature and have abundance, that's why people are poisoning themselves everyday with an excess and incorrect diet, over indulgence in protein which in small quantities is beneficial but very few people eat small quantities of protein and is only one of the reasons we have such an inflammatory pandemic in the west.
All I can say is ‘if you believe that you probably get your information from the same people that the beef lamb, chicken, plant based protein produces get theirs’ good luck with old age, arthritis, inflammation, kidney disease and all the other wonderful diseases you are inviting into your body because of abundant protein consumption, enjoy the pain! The reason why alot of americans are obese is that they worry about the little things too much instead of focusing on the bigger factors , its the same for the people that don't believe in Calories in Calories out, its so simple but they choose to believe some bullshit that says "just eat right" and you'll lose weight. People wanna believe its that easy but its not, i myself used to be 350lbs at 5'9" Obese as shit and I've tried all the fuckin fad diets you want but the bottom line is EAT IN A CALORIE DEFICIT only after doing that for many years now im a healthy 172lbs with some muscle too. The only macronutrient you need to watch for is protein, as long as you get enough like 1g of protein / 1lb of body weight then just count the calories, all that bullshit about inflammation from proteins is utter nonsense to a healthy adult. Before thinking about inflammation and all that shit fix your obese epidemic first
Rabbit starvation anyone? Humans can't process more than about 30% of their calories from protein long-term. Eating only protein literally kills you in a couple weeks. So the bit at the end about eating "mostly protein" is nonsense. Some populations are extremely healthy on energy dense diets, for example the Inuit under the puffy clothes looked like athletes, and they ate 80%+ fat. So the bit about eating "mostly energy" making you fat is also nonsense. That said, I think he touches on the ideal human diet: real food which is low-carb, high protein (not over 50%, but 20-35), with fats to fill in extra energy need. In other words, fatty meat and organs.
What a dumb comment, look at the people on carnivore that only eat beef every day 🙄 dead in 2 weeks. Lol... You don't have a clue and should educate yourself.

There is another specie - Frugivores! And that's us, humans (as well as the great apes). And we eat fruit And when you think about it, Fruits are the only type of food that really wants to be eaten.
It helps a seed get nutrition and compost when it falls from the tree and breaks down. Many require to be eaten to be broken down by digestive juices and pooped out to reproduce. Fruits are not the same as they were when humans became human..how does that even make sense? Not to mention there are no essential carbohydrates. Do you know what sarcopenia is? Do you suggest adults only drink breast milk as a survival tactic then since its so beneficial for babies? Do you realize crappy diets are the likely reason brain sizes in adults are shrinking as we arent supporting the brain energy needed? Fruit as we know it didnt even exist in primitive human times.
