This one explains how the mechanical bulb type thermostat operates. This video is part of the heating and cooling series of training videos made to accompany my websites: www.graycoolingman.com and www.grayfurnaceman.com to pass on what I have learned in many years of service and repair. What I don't understand is how the dial affects the thermostat? Does turning the dial affect the position of the contact, requiring the "bellow" to expand more or less depending on the temperature setting?

Great video....but....you don't say what's actually inside the Phial or Bulb.....lets say its a Room Temp Thermostat.....are we talking Air, Liquid, Sulphur Dioxide ( like the old days), etc....I have to say....I can't find any information of the actual substance anywhere.....sure the principle is simple.....but whats in it ???

After I replace a bad thermostat I like to break open the cap tube to hear if it's hisses (still charged). I replaced a t-stat on a old walk-in box that when broke open liquid sprayed out. Do you think it was r-11?

Probably not because R-11 would have a negative gauge pressure at the temperatures inside the walkin. It could be one of those substances that we could tell you but then we would have to kill you. lol GFM
