The Cenotaph - a national memorial in the UK to the fallen - was only originally intended to stand for a week.
However, 100 years after it was permanently erected, the monument remains the focal point for the country's annual remembrance commorations.

Never knew the background to the Cenotaph so thanks for posting. This year is especially sad as the Veterans cannot march past & each year their numbers fall even further, saying that I'm sure they'll be there in spirit. To those Ladies & Gents of HM Forces who gave their lives for freedom, may you rest in peace. To those who are still with us, thank you for your service - I salute you all (Ex Met plod) 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Its a pity that they didn't mention that its a larger version of the original cenotaph in Southampton commissioned by mayor of the City in 1918 i think it was ....the mayor of London saw it and asked if he could make one for the capital
