How a BUCK 110 Folding Hunter Knife is made - BrandmadeTV
For well over 100 years, 4 generations of the Buck family have made cutting edge knives. Now a household name for hunters and fishermen, BUCK not only makes knives for the outdoors, but continues to launch innovative products for all types of uses, even in the kitchen. BRANDMADE.TV filmed the making of the iconic 110 Hunter, the knife that put BUCK KNIVES on the map, at the Buck Knives factory in Post Falls, Idaho.
Buck Knives started in 1902 when Hoyt Buck wanted a longer lasting blade on his knife. Demand for his craftsmanship took an upswing after providing knives for the military in WWII. By the mid 50’s BUCK became a household name for outdoorsmen with the launch of the 110 Folding Hunter. Holding to Hoyt’s original motto of the finest materials, the 100 Hunter is hand crafted and guaranteed for life.

I had no idea that Buck knives were now made in USA. Most knives that use to be made in USA are for the most part made in China. I now need a lightweight pocket folding knife, as I gave my Gerber knife to a friend of mine as a gift for a great hunting trip. My choice will now be a Buck knife. I think they should be date stamped somehow so no matter how old they are someone can tell how old one of them is.. so each one can be its own little small piece of history to someone. I imagine fathers passing their knife down to their son so it would be awesome to know how old they are. I would love to own a silver one someday and by gosh I could have used one of these when I was working on a machine called a flow-wrapper in a factory to cut that plastic. I just polished one of the brass ones up using a special handheld drill like tool and braso (brass polish stuff we have in Australia) and by gosh did it come up so pretty. I had a mess to clean up in the laundry but it was well worth it for the end result. I put it with some of my beanie boo's so they could 'hold it' so I could get a few before and after photos. Now I want a really old or dirty one to see if I can do it again and better this time. The one I polished up had some small green stuff on it but it was not so bad once I wiped that stuff away. eBay here I come for a really miserable one that needs a lot of love should I want the challenge to clean up a really sad one.

I can get more work done faster with less fatigue with a classic mora that cost my grandpa less than $1 in the 50s. Love my bucks but there are less expensive better knives. You can still get a classic mora for like $15 last I checked, that's like 1/4 the price of a 110 which is a folder and everybody knows a folder is nowhere near as reliable as a fixed blade. The moras also 1/4 the weight lol and it's a fixed blade!!! With a lot more blade!! Blows my mind.
@LastBastian
@LastBastian Год назад
@@wis1024 Mora's are great bargains. But comparing fixed blades to folders is apples to oranges. There's a LOT more work and precision that goes into a folder. A more fair comparison would be something like an Opinel. Simple, inexpensive, classic folder that performers great for the money. All said and done, the Buck is still a great classic, and one of the few *affordable* knives still made in America.

I have a knife sharpening business and have sharpened thousands of knives. Sparks does not mean its destroyed, it was not heated long enough to do anything and a blueing of the metal is not indicative of ruined temper. It polishes out. A lot of sparks shows high carbon content. The color of the sparks is also an indicator of the purity of the carbon. Old German knives produce bright white sparks.

The blade shape is great, but the blade steel is quite the opposite. Heat treating can only do so much.

So machines don’t do all of it? That means if I get a poor quality knife it’s cause of some regular joe who wasn’t paying attention.

If you get a poor quality one, send it back to Buck for a replacement. They also guarantee for life, so if anything goes bad, send it in and they'll repair it for free, postage pre-paid. Although, I've never purchased a "bad" 110, and I have collected and used them by the dozens over a few decades. I had a couple that developed "blade wobble" (I bought them in the 1970's) from wear and tear, and they replaced the blades and "tightened" them up and sent them back after I stated they had "nostalgic" value and they had offered to just replace them with new knives. They also asked me if I wanted to keep the original 440C blades, in which they would sharpen them to factory specs and reinstall or if I wanted new 420HC blades, which I selected. Class act. For knives that cost, what, 65 dollars new?

Meh. The Buck 110 is a large heavy knife that is outdated and out classed by modern materials. I would love to see one update with a modern steel blade.

My New 110 came all dirty with green compound inside the handle. They forgot or didn't care to clean it during assembly. The opening/closing is so gritty like there's sand in there. It took me an hour to clean the green junk out of there and it's still not as smooth as it should be. The workers at Buck are incompetent. How a sample like this passed final quality control inspection? Disappointing.
