Should have mentioned that some vehicles have two temperature sensors, one two pronged sensor for the ECM and one smaller single pronged sensor for the temperature gauge. They're usually located near one another on the thermostat housing.

Yes ! They are an NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistor !!!! I had one fail on a hybrid 3 litre Nissan in line six (RB30DE) which caused the idle speed to run too high !!!! The RB25 sensor is has the later Denso style connector whereas the RB30E single cam engine used the old Japanese (Hitachi) type of connector. So, I just ran the older RB30E sensor in the RB25 inlet manifold with an aftermarket connector. I could've used the Bosch type sensor used in the Buick V6 & connector if the Nissan one wasn't available. I know the turbocharged RB30 engine was a GM only option in Australia & ran the Bosch type of fuel injectors,they were never fitted into a Nissan at the factory !!!!

Story:: on my 1981,Volvo 245 the cold start valve is controlled by a thermal time switch, Question:: is a coolant temperature sensor the same as a thermal time switch and can they be substituted, because they look basically the same. but are priced increasingly different.

Great information thank you! I was looking for a bit of a reminder of the circuit as I trouble shoot a friends vehicle. ***Warning Note*** A warning maybe noted, after you check the unit at operating temperature or near, Wait to remove the unit! The fluid will be hot, thus under pressure (The sensor gets its reading by contact with the fluid. Ensure you are not under the unit during removal, move fast or catch. I've had a few privates learn that one the shower way on HMMWV's in the Army. :)

Hello, my car is a fiat bravo 2 2008 1.6 multijet diesel. Since I have it from the last summer the car does not have a stable idle. In the winter that problem was gone. This summer it is here again. I tried a lot of things but nothing is helping. Now I have error codes P01EA and P0487(for EGR). P01EA looks like very generic code but it looks like the ones for engine coolant problems. So I am thinking is it possible for a faulty coolant temperature sensor to cause an unstable idle when the car is warming and hot? For example, maybe the coolant temperature sensor is sending wrong information to the ECU that the car is still cold and the ECU is pushing the wrong air-fuel mixture as if the car is cold? Thanks in advance!

My 2018 Acadia temperature gauge stays on cold although the engine has ran for a while and the cooling fan runs constantly. Didn't know if the temperature sensor is bad or the thermostat is sticking because it works at certain times then it doesn't.????

I an NOT a mechanic nor teckie but only a beginning hobbiest. I read somewhere that a blown fuse is very unlikely something to look for and presumably change. To keep people from not thwarting the true mileage of their vehicle, the mileage is tied in with the other important lights/gauges etc on the dash. If it was a blown fuse nothing would be working in the console. Alternately maybe there could possibly be an in-line fuse on the sending unit wire (unlikely). So if everything else is working on the console, I wouldn't bother looking to the fuse box.

Any hints on how to install? The coolant level sensor is very hard to push on. Is there any way to help put it on?
@CollosalTrollge
@CollosalTrollge 8 лет назад
Nor sure, i would not imagine it is hard to put it on. Isnt it just a mater of taking the old out and then after some coolant pours out...then just put the new one it and it has a thread to turn so it will be forced in no matter what ?

my pontiac g6 has a cobalts ecm, does anyone know if this is the reason why my temperature, rpms, oil level, and gas gauge dont work in my instrument cluster? the speed and lights work on it though
@65Superhawk
@65Superhawk 10 лет назад
Ok.. The sensor doesn't "send" a signal to the ECM right? It is just a variable resistor which probably is part of a voltage divider. If the resistance drops then the ratio between the two resistances in the circuit is changed and the ECM will "see" a different voltage than if the resistance was at normal state (cold engine). If the ECM does not see the sensor, some cars will automatically turn the fans on as a failsafe. So if you do such a test, dont be startled if your fans come on the minute you pull the connector off the sensor. my sensor read 2.6k with a hot engine. May not be working or in the alternative, my coolant may not be hot enough to drop it. Anyone know the normal stats for a Taurus 2002? 3.0L

In My Car From the last month I am facing weired issues: - Fuel Tank Got Shrinked Which caused wrong fuel indication. After installing a new Tank i am seeing whenever I open my fuel tank cap, air vacuum releases. - Another problem is. My temperature gauge is going 1/4 only. 2 months ago I serviced this car. Oil change, Oil Filter change, Air filter change, Installed thermostat which was not installed before, After servicing I ran 150kms. Everything ran fine, But now I am facing these two issue. Steps I have taken : Checked temperature guage by grounding it. It works fine. So I installed new temperature sensor. But same thing happening.

crank position sensor
@CollosalTrollge
@CollosalTrollge 8 лет назад
hi , what is crank sensor, i have heard of this also,. My car battles to cold start. It is a mystery though because it battles to start 5-7 seconds when i leave work at night .... it starts with no accelerator but its a bad idle and then 30 seconds the idle starts getting better. (first crack scenario 1a) When i leave home though every morning, the car seems to "want to start" better ... you can hear it almost catching....if i can say that ....but then i let go of the ley and it doesnt start. (first crank scenario 1x) IF i had to do that though whilst pressing accelerator in a 2000 rpm position.... then it starts fist time. (following first crank scenario 1a)...after i have tried to start it and it fails to "catch", I now turn the key again and it tries to start but it takes like 5-7 second before it start and i seem to NEED to press accelerator also. I have had this issue say for the last 2-3 years, with i can solve it. I am not a mechanic and not really a DIY person but i have bought jack stands and a jack(jack seems to be useless though since it doesnt raise the car enough and my (tyres/tires) seem to still touch the ground). I am willing to learn theory and do some stuff on my car. I have cleaned my ICV using carb cleaner and even soap and water and leaving it to dry in the sun, I have even tried a new ICV and then i managed to get a proper throttle body spray cleaner. I have also changed my Air In take pipe and the Air sensor it comes with. I have tried 3 sensors. I have tried to play with the ICV by unplugging it from the harness and my car idles erratically so it means it work? I have also tried to take out my MAP sensor plug and my car idles erratically so i guess it means it also works. Yeh anything to try and fix this and understand this stuff, it seems that cars are simple and yet they are complex so i dont know. I guess almost like being married. LEt me know if you have ideas,, thanks.

@348loadedlever3
@348loadedlever3 5 лет назад
Ali Mohammond yes a bad sensor will make a truck not start, unplug it and turn the key it should fire up, if you flood the engine trying to get it started then unplug the sensor, it may not start, so wait a day and try it again ( make sure the sensor is unplugged). What is happening is the sensor is shorting out and the computer thinks the vehicle is severely overheating and it messes up the fuel and timing. Hope this helps
