How to Test and Replace an Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor P0115 / P0125

In this video I go through the steps on determining why you may have code p0115 and/or p0125.. Ultimately, it comes down to two things, the harness connector or the coolant temperature sensor itself. A simple diagnosis that any one can perform at home. This was performed on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.

P0115 - An excessively low or high voltage from the sensor is entered in to the ECM.
P0125 - Insufficient coolant temperature for closed loop fuel control.

Just writing to say thanks. You helped me get my temperature gauge working again. This was on my 1990 Volvo 760 GLE with the B280F Peugeot V6. (I have been told that this engine was used in the Delorean). Following your diagnostic steps, on my sensor connector, one pin read 12V and the other 0. Then I switching to OHMS, the other pin read open circuit. So I reasoned that there must be an open in a ground connection somewhere. But instead of trying to fine it , I just ran a new wire from it to ground, measured the voltage again and it dropped from 12V to 5v . I started the car and the gauge now works.

Thank you very much! You shared a piece of gold information quickly in your video. You suggested doing a google image search for the location of something on your engine. I was sifting through videos trying to find temperature sensor on 97 outback. Less than 5 minutes after watching part of your video and I'd found it on google images and located it on my motor. Thanks again!

I have a 2004 VW Beetle. A couple of days ago it starting acting strange. The engine wouldn't run right and the air conditioning wouldn't work. I suspected it was the coolant temperature sensor. This morning while the engine was cool I tested the resistance across the 2 ECM pins which should have read at the most 2.5 kilohms. It read 416 kilohms. I replace the sensor and now it runs like it's supposed to. I am so thankful.

Hello CarsNToys I want to say great video and I was able to locate my temperature sensor on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 for I am getting a ‘gauge not working’ on my gauge-digital dash and temperature gauge does not move. I had replaced the temp sensor and I still get the ‘gauge not working’ error and my temp gauge does not move ( I let the vehicle idle for 15 minutes). I did the following test with my voltmeter: 1. Voltage to temperature connector as indicated in your video and I get 4.9 volts. 2. Tested the OHMS continuity on connector and it passes by giving audible sound. 3. I ran the Kilo-OHMS test on the old and new temp sensor and I get 5.0 on old sensor and 4.5 on the new temperature sensor. 4. I brought a new temp connector, which I had not replaced yet because the voltage test to the original connector works showing 4.9 volts. 5. My electric fan turns on when the engine is idling and when the a/c comes on. Any ideas on how to test this ‘‘gauge not working’ on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee? Thanks,

The thermostat in question is called a "fail-safe" thermostat meaning that when it fails, if fails in the open position. If you look at the top you will see where the carriage containing the pellet has locked itself in a notch on the body to keep it open.
