How The Cosmic Crisp Is Taking On America’s Favorite Apples

The Cosmic Crisp apple hit produce aisles across America on December 1, 2019. The variety came out of Washington State University's breeding program, which has been developing the apple for the past 20 years.
There are thousands of different kinds of apples on the market, and 2,500 of those are grown in the United States, like the Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, and America's favorite, the Gala, which just beat out the Red Delicious variety for the first time ever in production, according to the U.S. Apple Association. And yet, scientists are still developing new varieties.
But it's not just breeding programs making hybrids of the fruits and vegetables nearly everyone is familiar with.There's also scientists across the globe working on creating new varieties, whether it be apples or berries, mushrooms, or even crops like rice and wheat. This innovation isn't just the controversial GMO kind. In fact, crops have been cross bred to produce new varieties for hundreds of years.
Here’s how how horticulturists and scientists create new varieties of fruits and vegetables, and why there's space in the produce aisle for innovation.

I’d tried it recently, and I have to say it’s pretty damn good. Slightly tart like a Granny Smith, solid crunch, but the sweetness of a honey crisp. Not mushy and unappetizing like gala apples.

gala are crispy when they are fresh, and stored properly. If it is in the middle of winter and they say product of U.S, or Canada, or any where else in North America, dont buy them, the are old, stored apples. Nothing worse than old, mushy apple.

The real question I have is who is still eating red delicious apples 😝. The most tasteless apple in the market? I just tried the Cosmic Crisp this week and was impressed with it, especially for a large late season apple. It’s hard to find a good apple this large this late in the season and the price was much better than the Honeycrisps.
@JessieI

This is a VERY tasty apple. I sent my SO out to buy some in December 2019 as soon as I heard about them. And they are right about how long they last. I had one left in my fruit bowl for over three months, then I cut it in half and used it in a couple salads. The other half was in the fridge for a few weeks, it began to show a tiny bit of brown towards then end of April so I cut it up for a few salads. It was delicious and juicy and tart-sweet to the end of its life at the end of April. I can’t wait to get some more!!!

Yeah, because the problem isn't in the genetic engineering. The problem is that they engineer them to be more resistant to pesticides to allow for much larger amounts of pesticides to be used. GMO produce has much higher pesticide levels
@JessieI
@JessieI 4 года назад
^^THIS^^ this is the problem I have. Genetic Engineering, NO, not so much. BUT, genetically modified for the application of Tremendous amounts of pesticides and herbicides, VERY VERY MUCH a problem. Apples have a very thin skin, and the poisons also drip to the ground to be drawn from the soil and up into the tree along with its water. Silly me, I have a problem with feeding poisons to my grandchildren and I’m not much interested in noshing on any myself either. But not all GMO is Monsanto, nor is all GMO bad, and Cosmic Crisp Apples are not technically GMO at all.

Johnny Appleseed wasn't planting Apples for eating! Obviously! It was for drinking! Potable water was non-existent and the only thing they could safely drink was beer or wine. Without many native grapes, apples were needed in any frontier town so that they could make hard Cider and have something safe to drink. Eventually, along the way, one of those crab apple trees sprung up with big juicy fruits, like a red delicious and they've been Grafting them onto crab apple tree trunks ever since! Make a lot more money on apples for eating. 👍🏼 Btw, I highly recommend 'The Botany of Desire' by Michael Pollan

My problem with the red delicious came about in the late 90s when for some reason they started showing up in supermarkets undersized and tannic as heck. That's when I stopped buying it. The industry says that people fell out of love with the red delicious but I don't think that's what happened, I think that they got greedy and it came to bite them in the ace. The flavor of the red delicious grown well has an almost rose water quality to it and is not overly sweet. It makes the most refreshing apple juice you've ever had. I don't see it going away any time soon.

GMO reduces use of pesticide and antibiotics. But it would have a very unmanageable effect on wild plants and animals when they inter-breed. But, there are technologies to make GMO plants and animals making them infertile/sterile.

Is there a point to this comment? Many scientists are US government employees. When our government eschews science that is when you should start to worry.

@@pjschmid2251 Instead of wasting your energy to be an a$$hole; I highly recommend you research the history this country has with mad scientists from other countries. That's if your ignorant close mind allows you to put your pride to the side to make that small but rewarding effort.

WHITE LION I wasn’t being anything of the sort. In fact you are the one that has stooped to name calling. I only asked what was the point you were trying to make. I’m still unclear as to what it is. Are you against the US employing scientists, as that is how I took the statement. If that isn’t the case please clarify. I don’t understand your comment on mad scientists from other countries and how it ties into this video. And yes I do worry when the government ignores the work and advice of scientists, such as with climate change an the current situation surrounding COVID-19. Having government simply toss science out the window and declare it fake news and not worthy of attention is dangerous.

@@pjschmid2251 I apologize for misinterpreting your reply. I stated my point in the previous reply. The US has a dark history with foreign mad scientists...spoiler alert...they hire them.
