Also in Hamburg, I think they have an - old tunnel below the water for bikes and pedestrians. With an elevator in each end.

The tunnel build started in 1937 and was completed in 1942….so it is not very high tech. But sturdy.

You can also cycle underneath the Oude Maas, from Rotterdam to the Hoeksewaard. (Vice versa is also possible of course.)

great Video again, there is a story about de official opening, during the war, at the north end, there were nazi official for the opening, lots of propaganda planned, but another guy , who was what the story says an engineer, didnt like that, he went to the other side.. waiting for some real rotterdam kids.... he said to the kids, "go the other side. " the nazi's looked stupid, it was already in use by kids, before the official opening.

We have all kinds of cycle infrastructure, have you seen the flying cycle roundabout in Eindhoven or the cycle bridges over the Amsterdam-Rijn kanaal?

Never been in this specific cycle tunnel but I would guess that the surface of the road is just your "everyday Dutch ZOAB". The type of asphalt typically used in the Netherlands for roads and paths. In this case it just isn't red. Asphalt is all the same you might think but if you ever drive over Dutch roads you will quickly realise that this is not the case. ZOAB (Zeer Open Asphalt Beton/Very Open Asphalt Concrete) is soecifically developed for (Dutch) roads and cyclepaths. ZOAB for car roads is different from that for cycle roads.

We have a bicycle tunnel in Antwerp under the Scheldt since 1933. And the escalators are made of wood, so this is nothing new. The tunnel is called Sint-Annatunnel

I am a born Rotterdammer, 70 years old and live 5 minutes from the tunnel. The Maastunnel is the oldest immersed tunnel in the Netherlands. It connects the banks of the Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam. The tunnel includes four tubes: two for cars, one for cyclists and one for pedestrians. Construction started in 1937 and was completed in 1942. The Maas tunnel was necessary because fills arose on the two bridges that connected the banks at the time, because everything had to cross the bridges, trams, horse and carts, trucks, etc. After The tunnel has been restored for 75 years (2017). As a little boy I often went through the tunnel by bike and there were sometimes more than a hundred people queuing outside to get in and then all the escalators were full of people, so many people. The tunnel was used, but it is no longer so busy.

The fact it's not new, isn't the case. The bicycle tunnel The Maastunnel (NL) and also Sint-Annatunnel (BE) is a special and interesting phenomenon for people abroad. Both projects are very nice.
