how the electric bicycle is transforming our lives

What if we chose the electric bicycle as our primary way of getting around? Instantly lowering our costs of living, reducing our carbon, increasing our health, supporting the autonomy of young and old, reviving a vibrant local economy, on streets designed for everyone? Swapping our car for the ebike took some courage, but with safe, connected trails like the Salish Sea trail network, it would be an easy choice for many. This little film imagines the possibilities.

You’re absolutely right that a road is a public space that connects private (and public) spaces. After all, the same roads not too long ago were regularly used by horses and carriages, bicycles, oxen and other livestock, and even walking trails by natives and early settlers in some places. Nowadays some people definitely take the roads for granted and think their cars have priority, but should they really?
@appleturnover

right? i think some pretty exciting possibilities open up when the space is shared safely.

I love what you are doing. I commend you . I am living with a young man who's love is the powerful fast car. To get through this and come to where you are is a very long journey. It has been the young coming of age have loved the swift ness of speed. As the motor car is designed to do. A male off spring is certainly different to a gentle female. And dear Eylse I am using my son's comment to say this and I myself am Josephine who you know.

hi josi! yes, driving cars and coming-of-age have been closely tied. it was a rite of passage for me, too! but we can feel the speed on a bicycle where we are alienated in a car, i have never lost the euphoria on a bike. and the ebike gets you back up robinson on the other side too. i think the culture will have to shift. not easy x

"What if a road is a public space that connects our private spaces. Surely then we should all have equal rights to use this space. Right now we grant that privilege to the car." Absolutely true!

Legally, the road already is, with the exception of freeways. However, we have allowed the automobile, and its drivers to bully their their way close to exclusive use. Every automobile driver should be required to ride a reasonably busy stretch of roadway to experience how automobile drivers treat other road users. Most don’t even recognize their boorish behaviour. In Salt Lake City, huge portions of the roads in the downtown core are painted to proclaim the rights of bicyclists as road users, forcing automobile drivers to grant right of way to bicyclists; possibly we should consider the same.
@appleturnover

perhaps we should. there must be lots of ways to help folks get perspective on ways to use the road in a sociable, equitable way.

It should not be too much to expect to live & use our roads in a safe manner. We are constantly reminded of this fact by TV & Radio messages brought to us by ICBC & Government Agencies yet the drivers ego & impatience is what still dictates their aggressive behaviour. I think addressing driver attitude will have the biggest impact on keeping everyone safe.

it seems like this is true in many parts of our province. i don’t recall it being so, when i learned to drive in the 90s. i wonder how we make the connection?

I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest in Oregon. In the cities there are some good bike paths marked clearly with green paint. I live in a rural area however, and we don't have room for both bikes and cars to safely be on the road together on many streets 😕. I used to love to take my bike on my errands when I lived in the suburbs.

it’s so similar all over. i hope we can culture a big change now. wishing you bike paths and the end of car-dominance and inhuman speeds.

thanks for making this film, and making all of what you do: it's really essential work. as a sunshine coast girl who is living in germany right now, I was totally impressed by how incredibly well-connected and well maintained the bike paths are here. it is very seldom that one needs to bike next to cars at all... there is almost always a separate path that takes you anywhere and everywhere you'd like to go. i miss a lot of things about home but the aggressive logging trucks tailing me on a crisp, beautiful fall morning commute is NOT one of them. it's really apparent how much the bike infrastructure here contributes to a biking culture. i see even the oldest folks out on bike touring trips, biking for several days with their luggage with them. thanks for making these films, and I wish you many beautiful and safe cycling experiences on salt spring! I hope canada comes to its senses!

oh, amazing! thanks for your kind words. it helps to see how normal cycling is in other places. i know exactly what you mean about germany, i went to art school for a bit in munich and i just adored the bike paths. and they’d been there for decades, that was 20+ years ago! very well considered. thanks for writing, your encouragement means so much.

Just found your channel. Very nice content. I feel compelled to say that if you ride bikes on roads with cars you will eventually get hit by a car. I knew a semi-pro cyclist who was hit 3 times. He walked away with minor injuries each time. When I was a kid I had a couple of very close calls. Personally, I would never bike on roads with cars.

thanks for your concern. i agree that we need to change the culture of our streets. it’s slowly happening, the law here just changed to make motor vehicle drivers responsible for vulnerable road users safety, as well as to add into law the safe passing distance. other places have slowed roads and i would love to see more separation…but we can culture respect in how we drive and reimagine our roads as shared spaces with a priority on safety, not speed. til then, i take my chances (with blinking lights and caution!)

This opportunity works well in smaller communities, and those without winter ice and snow. As communities become larger, and sprawl more, other options are needed. Similarly, winter not only brings colder weather which makes bicycling less enjoyable, it also adds safety issues, such as ice-covered, narrowed roads. Making our communities more walkable with amenities in reach, lowering speed limits, offering quality public transit, and implementing car share programs, are all steps which can make it easier to switch. When we moved to our current community, we consciously chose a dwelling within walking distance of the downtown core, with the express purpose of ease of access by multiple transportation modes.

yes, carshares and all of that helps so much, then the bicycle fills it out neatly. we were so interested to learn more about how northern countries cycle year-round, with their bicycle highways linking communities. there’s even a winter cycling conference! wintercycling.org

“The Winter Cycling Federation’s vision is “winter cycling for everyone” - a world where cycling year-round is understood as normal and practical, where cycling is a viable transportation option for people of all ages and abilities.”

What I’m not clear on is what you are asking the government to do exactly. It would be more costly and less environmentally friendly to build cycle lanes and not very enforceable in the countryside and the majority of people still use a car to get around - so they are the majority on the road. I’m all for a change but not clear on what you are asking for - do you want tougher legislation for speeding or tax incentives for not owning a vehicle or what else? I’d be interested to hear your plans/opinions.

have a look at bc’s active transportation guide. they’ve laid out clearly what’s needed, and they are voting on safe passing right now. as i said in the film, a poll showed that a majority would choose to ride their bicycles if safe infrastructure were in place. our mla and our mp are huge supporters of this work.
