No, an e-bike probably won't rescue you from a burning building (although it might?). But using an e-bike regularly for exercise can reverse damage caused to your body by injury or lifestyle. Although sometimes I pretend to be a doctor, I am not. So use your own judgment if ebikes are the way to go for you.

Look at how many of us are saving our lives with our E-bike! I am a fatty who is recovering from a car wreck. My E-bike is getting me back to exercising.

As a kid, I lived on my bike. In my 30s, I purchased a ricing bike for fitness. Now I am 68, with all of the above aches and pains, and I just purchased an ebike. I use it to commute each today, and I have a second ebike on its way for trail and fun riding. Everything you say makes so much sense. Now our job is to get the US state and local governments to make our roads more bike friendly (like Europe is doing right now).

Dude! Absolutely bang on! Thank You for making this clip. I'm a single male about to turn 56 in a few weeks. I used to regularly bike ride since I was a child and even had the amazing experience of cycling from Jasper to Banff in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Canada on 3 occasions. Then in 2006 my life took a radical turn. I broke my back and shattered my heels in a fall that resulted in 3 months of being in the hospital, 3 surgeries, and many months of rehab. Initially the doctors weren't sure I'd ever walk again. Thankfully feeling and movement returned and within a year I was able to walk again without aids. However, I couldn't do anything too physically exerting any longer and lost my job. Probably a good thing in hindsight. A few years later I tried riding again but my lower back and hip regions could not handle the exertion. Lots of degenerative issues due to my body crumpling like an accordion when I fell. So I rode less and less until I just couldn't ride anymore and hung my bike up in 2016. I occasionally tried taking it out for a quick spin again 3 or 4 times just to see but the pain and discomfort flared within just a few moments of hitting the road. So the spring of 2017 was the last time I ever rode. Didn't help that I then hit the bottle and became a recluse doing less physical activity, eating crap and gaining weight. It got so bad that I would hit the bottle as soon as I got home from work until I passed out and then do it over again the next day. In late 2018, my physical and mental health were beginning to substantially plummet. One day through the foggy haze I managed to realize enough that if I continue in this trajectory, I would abandon my rescue companion with an early death (a ginger cat I saved from being beaten by a man with a stick). So I had to make a choice about living or dying. In order to continue enjoying the experience of cat hair all over the place, scooping clumps out of a litter box, and taking forever to change my bedding due to a furry lump that loves to wrap itself in my bedsheets, I sought help and attended an addictions treatment centre for the month of December. Since getting out of treatment on December 28, 2018, I have been most fortunate to maintain my sobriety and began the journey of rebuilding my life. I eventually began researching e-bikes last November along with the testimonies of many people suffering from physically debilitating ailments who claim that e-bikes have changed their lives. So, as a gift to myself, I ordered one in late February and began a new journey of reclaiming a pastime that I thought might be permanently lost. I cannot even begin to express the joy and elation. I can ride again and not suffer debilitating pain! I'm exploring and feel like a giddy child. I'm motivated, curious and creative and, above all, so grateful. As a result, I'm beginning to also experience a rather strange phenomenon in a new way that has been very foreign to me for a long time; happiness. I'm still overweight and out of shape and need to work on a variety of life style changes, but I'm making strides. And with being able to navigate on 2 wheels again, my desire and drive to make my life better have been given a huge infusion thanks to my e-bike. Didn't mean to be so long winded but what JohnnyNerdOut says is absolutely spot on. I encourage anyone--especially those with physical and/or inner forms of debilitating ailments--to consider investing in an e-bike. For this middle aged eccentric burnout with a rescue cat, it's been a game changer. Okay. Time to hit the saddle and head over (pain free) to the grocery market to get some tofu and bean sprouts. Just kidding. More like bread, Temptations, blah blah blah...

I hope many people read your story, you and I share a commonality with what alcohol can do and what life is like without it. Almost done with my 3rd year of abstinence and I rarely even think of that stuff anymore. My e-bike has put a huge exclamation point on it. It got me un-retired and 30 yrs younger. Listen to me, join me and the millions of those who were once obese with a multitude of various maladies and who lost many bowling balls worth of fat and are now healthier and happier by learning about metabolic health. I did it with a low carbohydrate diet and no vegetable seed oils, and if you do it right, you can lose tons of fat and never be hungry again. You Tube taught me how to do it. Thank you for sharing your inspiring story. Congratulations

Great video, Johnny. I suffered a stroke several years ago, left side got messed up. My wife bought me a recumbent trike a few months later. It was fun on relatively flat surfaces but any hills were a problem, even small inclines were difficult, so I didn't ride it much. The trike just languished in the patio gathering dust. Just wasn't fun or worth the hassle of getting on the thing (very low to the ground), and having to strap my left foot in (special adaptive pedal). Also, I once went out riding and got 2 flats in the front tires after picking up a ton of goatheads in each one. After a friend bought an ebike i decided to install a Bafang BBS02 on the trike. It was a challenge to install with only one side of my body functional but finally completed it. After several tweaks and dialing the system in it was finally rideable and reliable enough to take out for a ride further than just around the block. I was still concerned about flats so I had Tannus solid tires installed. The motor makes all the difference in the world and now its so much more fun to ride. If anyone is interested in recumbent trikes because of mobility issues, I would suggest getting one where the seat is not too low for easier mounting. Trikes are fun, especially etrikes!

I used to love to ride my bike. I have MS and sometimes I’d ride out ok, but my legs were weak for the ride home- so I stopped riding. Then, I found your channel and converted my old pal into an electric bike. My freedom is back- my Bafang is my safety net. Thank you!

I cannot stand or walk at all and have been in a wheelchair for 30+ yrs. Building an ebike with the Bafang motor I can finally get back on a mtb and I’m so excited to get moving. I am seriously overweight and unfit, so this will not only be fun, it will bring my fitness level up. My bike should be complete tomorrow, as I was waiting for some upgrades to arrive.

When I was 50 built a state of the art at that time all xtr Santa Cruz blur. I converted it to an e-bike bbshd about a year ago. It's brilliant I'm back out on the trails. I go further and stay out longer. At 68 I recently upgraded the fork to a fox boxer ( craigslist) 200 mils of travel added a dropper seat Post. Both have seriously improved the experience. Changing the height of the seat really helps on long rides both for comfort and for the terrain you're riding on. Cheers just do it you'll be glad you did least ways I am.

@@MrJob91 Thanks mate! At 6 years old my right hip turned to jelly {Legg Calve Perthes disease) so for the past 60 years i've been dealing with a lot of pain and mobility issues. The hip has since been rebuilt 3 times with currently a fourth necessary as the old one is now somewhat worn after 20 years....and during he last ten years my cervical discs have collapsed one after the other ossifying and they dig into my spinal column leaving me in constant pain, with stinging and numb arms much of the time. Cycling has been my saviour! Still, for some years it became impossible as my legs weakened until, joy of joys, the advent of EMTBs encouraged me to try again and I can honestly say it has pretty much saved my life, as per your excellent video.

Heat Stroke /Heat exhaustion event is why I got into e-bikes. Very easy to overpush oneself on a hot day and BONK OUT on side of road due to Heat Stroke with a heavy bike. Especially when it's the same long tall hill climb to get home. A 46 tooth BBS02 with 32 tooth rear gear made that daily hill climb easy and safer for me. Doing 17 MPH on flats @ PAS #2 gets me around fine and pulls 250 Watts for good range. Punch the throttle for more power as needed.

My best mate fractured a vertebrae and a ruptured disc in a work place accident six years ago. Just to make matters worse he was also diagnosed with scoliosis and arthritis during his treatment. He lost his job which also meant he lost his company car. He developed a painkiller and heroin addiction and suffered from severe depression. Two years ago his family bought him an E bike. At the time he was furious and thinking "what am I going to do with this"? Fast forward two years and he has clocked up over 4,000 miles on his bike. He's off both painkillers and heroin and his pain levels have fallen. The bike has given him enough mobility to visit friends and family and made it possible for him to do his own grocery shopping without having to catch a cab or pay for delivery. It mightn't sound like much but he has also increased his fitness levels to the point that he can do a bit of dog walking for "pocket money". Aside from his small apartment, his bike is his most valued possession and gives him a sense of pride that he would otherwise be without. I can honestly say that I've witnessed Johnny Nerdout's hypothesis tested and realised.

Combined with other exercises like yoga ( to keep some balanced muscle and posture) an ebike has helped me tremendously. Over the last 35 years of back pain I've tried lots of things, pain killers were the worst, walking is ok but hard on my hips and knees which scream in pain after a while so I limit it. Cycling without electric when I can is ok but suddenly finding myself in a ton of pain and unable to cycle home is not good so I diy my bike to ebike and it's fab. It's not just the physical but also the mental stimulation and feel good factor really lifts my mood

Asthmatic checking in! It's not just about pain, lots of folks with breathing issues out there as well. being able to use a bike while not having an asthma attack to help get back in shape is also a game changer!

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and can barely walk even with crutches. Discovered a couple years ago that I can ride a bike without my hips or knees dislocating, but would run out of gas pretty quickly. Immediately started saving for an E-bike then 2020 decided money needed to go to bills, so now I'm trying to figure out how to build one. Haven't worked in years, so no stimulus checks for me. slow and steady, it'll get there. Great advice for anyone who needs to get off the couch.

Great video, Johnny! So sorry about your brother. Wife got me a BBS02 for my '89 Cannondale XM (that I bought new!) and i'm riding it a lot now. For me it was the exhaustion factor - after 20 miles of riding even on a nice road bike, i'd be wiped out for a couple days. Now, I can do a 20 and feel refreshed and ready for the next one. Contemplating same treatment to my road bike. Hmmm. Dig your channel!

Ebikes are great, if you live in a hilly area bikes can be a pain in the ar5e. My wife hated biking and wouldn't go on any bike ride that involved hills. But now she loves it, she does pedal assist and its more like a brisk walk but you go muck further faster.

Painkillers are dangerous in two way: First avoiding those without reason when pain began and stay. Secondly when come addict to those caused of avoiding first. Electric bikes are very good for start exercise. I started having intermittent knee pain that is felt when walking but not while cycling.

I strongly agree, sitting in a car keeps you in one position and makes you lazy. Riding an ebike gives you fresh air, exercise, and gets you anywhere and everywhere a car can, sometimes a ebike can also be quicker. Since riding mine I've lost about 13 pounds commuting to work with a round trip of 18 miles. Still trying to loose about a good 15 more but it works.

Just got my Electronic E bike for $800. Just using it for 3 days I can feel my body, balance and mental health improve. I had a foot injury and the bike doesn't seem to make my foot hurt. I can feel it in my core, thighs, lungs and butt. I tried hiking and I would end up having down days. This I can do every day! I'm 65 and tired of being the old fat lady especially since the pool and gym are closed.

And horrible for handling. I'm willing to bet you never tried a sidecar rig. Worst of both worlds. Off camber or leaning destabilizes handling. Not what the mobility impaired need

Strenuous. The key word. So, Ive rode bikes on and off my entire life, ( not a long hauler, marathons etc) but short bursts for exercise so on and so forth. Now I'm 69 and counting, but I have lung damage from exposure to asbestos when I was 20 or so. I've spoken to a mesothelioma lawyer about the extent of the damage I have...and you know what he said.. you're riding a bike with asbestos on your lungs??? So needless to say I wasn't happy as it is a strenuous endeavor to bike when your lungs are calcifying. So I got an ebike from a local bike shop ( I love motion and the emotion of motion) and pedal assist is priceless. I always pedal just enough to exercise but never to the point of aerobic which is counter productive to my health, though I'm not sure of my longevity. My point here is, these e bikes are very beneficial to someone with my condition and are worth their weight in happiness. P.S. great content is Priceless also

I totally relate to what ur saying about addiction on drugs, off and on through out my life, i am clean and have been for awhile, since i got an DIY electric bike, its been addicting lol , this addiction on electric bikes is much better than drugs 👍👍👍👍👍 , i have 3 electric bikes, one is broke down temporarily , i tacoed my aluminum Forks so i got a pair of steel ones , so im gonna be getting my first e-bike back together sometime soon, i learned that you need more than just one toque arm, once you get up to a certain wattage, i got 3 hubs, two at 1000w & 1 at 1500w, use at least 1 toque arm on each side of ur forks, if u can, 2 on each side as in having a toque arm all the way around ur forks , both front and both back of the forks , but definitely 2 , one on each side , i had my first experience with a hub spinning off , luckily i wasn't going fast and didn't get hurt ,having 4 on my beach cruiser, not afraid to b doing 30+ mph , just don't hit bumps, ouch , but no need to b going fast all time , i have 2-700c - 1-27.5 & a 26" on the way , e-bikes are fun , much more fun than drugs !!!👍

Hey yeah! I hear all the time that people say, aw- e-bikes is cheating. You don't get good exercise on those! And to them I say, well good for you! You are probably fit and healthy, and quite capable of using a standard bike. But my father has had both his knees swapped out now after a long life as a plumber. He needs to use his new joints as much as possible, and the doc recommends biking. My father has been biking every now and then most of his life, but after the surgery he's only able to do very short trips, and he can't do hills without getting off. He bought an e-bike, and his life is very different now! He's biking everywhere, all the time. Even choosing the bike before his brand new car, if he can! He is in much better shape than in a long time, and the knees are doing great! This would not have been possible without an e-bike! Not nearly in the same timeframe, anyway. Another thing is that since he got his bike, he's been talking to all his friends about how it has changed his life, and made it better. Now many of them have bought bikes and joined him, and the go on trips together on paths and in areas they have not been in years and years! His e-bike is actually changing other peoples lives as well! Also, I have a lot of different issues myself, bad knees form injuries and a plumbers life, chrons, chronic joint problems etc. witch now has led to me getting diabetes T2 on top of it all. Thanks to YOUR videos, and what I've seen my father do, I'm now about to order a conversion kit for my bike (witch I got years ago when I hurt my knees, but haven't been able to use enough lately). Can't wait to see how this will help me, ´cause I used to love biking. I went EVERYWHERE on my bike in my youth. Maybe all is not lost, after all!? Thank you!

This is very good advice. My wife and I have decided to get back into cycling. The group that we are are going to cycle with are all younger than us, so she need some help. I have just ordered a mid motor kit to convert her cruzer bike into an ebike. (I was finally convinced by one of your videos to go this route) . She is not very technically savvy so I am looking for some guidelines to share with her on when to shift gears . This is to prevent the motor straining the chain and other components which i believe could easily happen when you have an 500W electrical motor assisting..i.e you don't feel the strain as much in your legs as before. I guess the Wattmeter on the display may help here?. Do you perhaps have video on this subject?
@michaelsprinzeles4022
@michaelsprinzeles4022 3 года назад
If your display has the option, I'd suggest monitoring amps instead of watts. Amps will give you a better idea of how much you're straining or heating up the motor. You don't want to run a motor or controller at the full potential amps (or watts) except for short bursts!

I would suggest adding a shift sensor to cut power to the motor when shifting. Johnny does mention this in one of his videos, don't remember which one though. But a lot of install videos from others show you how if you have a Bafang middrive motor.
