I remember the favorites were Brazil, Germany, France and Spain in that order before it started. for Spain it was a bit rarer to see someone predicting them to win, but I never saw predictions outside of these 4. the first 3 were pretty close though

most of all since germany had been polishing their newest golden generation since 2006 with 3 semis and 1 final at tournaments from that tournament onwards. they were definitely the most deserving team over the past few tournaments combined.

I didnt even knew Brazil were the favs for 2018. I believed it was France with Belgium behind. I mean France was the best team in the world at that point, I cant comprehend why they werent the favs.

There are even those who consider the 82 team more talented that the one from 1970. Outside of the 2 cups we hosted, that’s the major heartbreak we had. And you make me happy bringing up Reinaldo, as a Atlético fan. But I didn’t have much of an opportunity to see him playing, his career ended way too soon

Yes I think this is a very western-centric, if not British-centric view of who are favourites. 1994 was a bizarre tournament, with regular stops for players to rehydrate in the high humidity. Most of us were probably assuming Qatar would be similar, but the air-con in the stadiums mean the spectators are getting rather chilly!

I overlooked their defeats to Switzerland and Czechoslovakia in the 30s. 36 Years of failing to even qualify plus the whole lack of broadcasted matches globally still meant that people didn't consider them favorites. The world didn't even know what formation they played in. The world Cup was the event that introduced the world to Dutch football.

@@NoonyJW I think they'll be fine. Mbappe plays better alongside Giroud and Benzema hasn't been as good this year as he was last year anyways. They got good back-up at CB and I don't rate Kimpembe that high anyways (good in 1 on 1, bad positionally). Pogba is an overrated diva who plays a few good games each year (happened to be last time around those were during the WC) so hit and miss.

I looked at it a year ago, for a similar conversation, but from what I remember only 2-3 players were different between the loosing and later (unfairly) winning teams. That wouldn't explain such a different result. However the rain, Germany having studs and Puskás being unfit does.

The difference is that for Brazil not winning is a disapointment. For most teams its about how far they can go.

Major european nation? How is Belgium a major european nation in football? They have zero World Cup or Eurocup titles! And Brazil has already beaten Serbia and Switzerland, two decent European squads so far!

@@educarvalho6516 Dude, that 2018 Belgium squad was world class, with a solid defense and one of the best attack trios in the world with those 3 players in peak form. Belgium might not be a juggernaut but that team was far better than, let's say, Netherlands in 2010.

Brazil is looking good so far but they haven't played a very good opponent yet, and even the Swiss managed to slow them down for a long time. I'll believe in Brazil if they beat Spain in the quarters.

To be honest, they are huge favourites in 1974, 1978, and 2010, but none of them ended as a winner after reaching the Final.

Well, wikipedia is known to be unreliable at times, and Alfie likes to do more than that, likes to be thorough. Wikipedia as the only source is questionable.

For example the wikipedia entry for the 1954 world cup states 'Hungary' were the favourites without actually linking the source material so yeah, wikipedia is unreliable.

I am not saying it should be the only source, but many wiki articles have links to to other sources and that can be helpful. Also, Hungary *were* the favorites in 1954, so there's that :D.
