Barry Allen did NOT create the multiverse. It was the time traveling of Oan scientist, krona, AND Pariah to the BEGINNING of existence. This caused ALL possible possibilities exploded into existence. After the remaining earths (1,2,4,S, and X) were merged, there was ONLY 1 earth/universe. However, you could STILL create an alternate timeline by traveling back and changing something. This would create an alternate timeline/universe. When Barry Allen traveled to Earth-2 in FLSH ON TWO WORLDS, he merely vibrated to the other universe. Time traveling at that time was not really time traveling. It was actually universe hopping/traveling, given that all possibilities that COULD EXIST DID (because of Krona and Pariah’s time traveling explained in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS).
Considering how often the Flash is involved in multiversal shenanigans like Flashpoint, it feels quite appropriate that the concept of the multiverse in comics started with him.
@@dominoprzybilski7865 No, it’s an alternate timeline. Similar but not quite the same. He changed a point in history in our reality and a new timeline broke off from there. Still our same reality/universe
@@dominoprzybilski7865to elaborate on what the other user said, in the comic, the animated Flashpoint Paradox movie and even the CW show, Barry is the only Barry in Flashpoint and his memories were being slowly over-written the longer the timelines stayed the same. It’s not another universe in the Multiverse. It’s the same universe but with the timeline changed. “Alternate timeline” is less specific, so I’d say it’s an “altered timeline”. That’s why he couldn’t just run back home. He needed to undo it. SPOILERS FOR THE FLASH MOVIE they decided to do some different things with the existence of another Barry but he’s a younger one from the new past. The new timeline now also collided with those of other universes merging with them. So now it’s both a time travel and a Multiversal story.
I always found pretty incredible that the DC multiverse had existed since the Silver Age of Comics, considering how really simple and PC that era was. I thought it was a great creative decision that they decided to expand the DC lore so enormously and bring back the forgotten characters from the Golden Age.
that era wasn't "PC" by any standards I'm aware of, it was ruled over by the CCA which was essentially just used to remove diversity and nuance from comics. it was pretty much the opposite of PC. Cops could only be shown as the good guys (with a later revision that allowed them to be shown as corrupt so long as it was seen as an exception, so basically just pushing the "a few bad apples narrative"), anything related to LGBTQ issues was strictly banned, it was not PC
@@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868C applies to the morality of the time. Nowadays, being PC consists in openly supporring mentalities considered "inclusive" and "progressive". Back in the 50's, being PC consisted in following the strict "good and bad" moral concepts of the time and making comic book stories that had a pretty basic plot and characters. It's a concept that changes over time
This takes me back. When I was at High School, I had to do a presentation, so I decided to do it all around western comic book history and when I got to the silver and bronze age, I was surprised in the research behind this Flash issue, it fascinated me and my colleagues with it's legacy in books like Spider-Men and the context surrounding it at the time as well as how much this still influences the entertainment industry today.
The flash of two worlds is such a classic story in my opinion and tons of fun and personally was a launch for the dc multiverse at least in my opinion.
It’s fascinating how we’ve got so many movies about the multiverse in the past 3-4 years. I just hope that it doesn’t turn into a lazy writing trope in the coming years.
The first encountent between Barry and Jay has had manyvremakes through years. There's actually an 80's comic in which that event is witnessed and narated by a young Beast Boy
2:12 Wonder if you would mention the technicality that "Wonder Woman kinda introduced the multiverse first, by having her in a story dealing with a counterpart of a mirror universe". however that's more like "a precursor of the concept" and flash is the one who truly made the multiverse a thing 8:04 there we go. it got a mention
i think my main problem with marvel's use of the multiverse in the comics nowadays is main character syndrome. one of my favorite things about the original introduction of the multiverse in marvel comics was that the universe we follow was made Earth 616. DC chose for all the main universes to be special. earth 1. earth 2. earth prime. etc... in marvel, they defied that trend, saying "in a multiverse, why should we assume that the characters we follow are more important than any other universes?" but with plot points in things like Spider-Verse and Secret Wars 2015, earth 616 has gradually become more and more of Marvel's own prime earth, with the entirety of the current marvel multiverse having been created by the Reed Richards of earth 616, Spider-Man of earth 616 being "The chosen one," and Captain Britain/Betsy Braddock of E616 being the leader of all Captain Britains.
Strange to think the Golden and Silver ages were only five years apart. We're further away than that from the Civil War/Infinite Crisis era, let alone Watchmen and DKR.
Excellent review this story is the start of not only the DC multiverse but multiverse stories in general in comics i give all praise to carmine infantino the artist and the unsung legend of comics storytelling Gardner fox
I didn’t know the tidbit about the cover designs. That’s HILARIOUS. This amazing concept was hit upon b/c of…. Rivalries between the creative team. Damn, that is funny.
My wife very recently ask me who created the multiverse DC or Marvel and i thought OLC hadn't upload a video with that content. Thank you so much for this video.

Still would be nice if Marvel/DC could make a Crossover..i mean MARVEL does World ending events almost EVERY 2-3 Month so lets make a Simple story that somehow some big new Evil Unites DC and Marvel Villains and Heroes have to join forces to beat em..though BECAUSE of Marvel Event fatigue they Should first have 2-3 years when they ARE not making "Earth/Universe is in danger" event
I wonder if anyone remembers that the golden age earth II Wonder Woman had a doppelgänger first. Interestingly enough Gardner Fox originally was going to call the Justice Society Earth, Earth I, as they were first, Justice League obviously would have been Earth II, however a writers mix up mentioned Barry Allen Flash II home as Earth I. DC stuck with it saying Anthro, the First boy on Earth was from Earth One.
@@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 people think dc is copying marvel because marvel released the dr strange MOM and spiderman nwh and spiderverse movies before the flash movie which is coming out now
flash didn't create the multiverse it was perpetua a member of a race of cosmic beings known as "Hands", referencing the common imagery in DC of a giant Hand creating the Universe. She also created the Monitor, Anti-Monitor and World Forger.
eh idk about that, ATSV proves that the multiverse isn't the problem with movies people don't like that involve it. It just happens to be that some of the movies people don't like have the multiverse in them
Beautifully done! Masterfully executed! I'm an avid reader of comics. Especially the golden oldies...... (Bronze, Silver to Golden)! I don't bother with new comic's from last few years. ......political trash! Besides, everyone else's milage may vary! Anyway, keep up the great work Owen!☝
