I really appreciate your perspective and agree 100%. Getting Certifications shows your willingness to learn and dedication to a goal regardless of the certification. I personally have been in the IT and Technology space for the last 7 years and I have been the most successful when I have been studying for certifications and taking classes. Cool. I always thought about this in the back of mind. However, did you already have experience in computer science. This may not be good for someone starting from scratch? Or maybe it is?
The best value is to take it through the Coursera Online Learning site. If you sign up for the yearly membership which is called Coursera Plus you can take multiple classes for around $299 - $399 which is roughly the cost of one community college class. Good Luck !!
