Randomly found this and got me thinking, you could make a absolutely massive series out of this. I can't think of many things in BL2 that worked as intended or wasn't twisted in a way by players to absolutely destroy any semblance of balance in the game. But that was why I loved BL2 - everything was broken, overpowered or in some way jank enough to be hilarious.

Well i mean survivability skills in bl2 are pretty underrated because, like they make the game easier because if u go all damage skills it makes the game a lot harder on uvhm and op levels, the grog on its own is a good utility but its probably not using for most characters, since makes makes u worse at the game since its a crutch. The only time i would say its worth using is against raid bosses or the peak since they are easily the most challenging parts of the game.

@@explodifier6021 100% Agreed! I lobbied for that (and got bombed) in the forums some years back when I stated the facts you said and even more about suggestions to the UCP when it was new. (Especially with Gaige) I even hit up community Badasses on both their channel and the forums (Some of which were NOT receptive to another perspective and agrro to boot. Lol) and got nothing but dismissed. The Moxxi abuse really hindered a LOT of growth and discovery in the meta especially for certain characters and it was frustrating.

I’ll never forget when they did the 100k loot hunt, I wasn’t playing much borderlands and didn’t know the grog was dropped until after it couldn’t be farmed anymore. Watching this video just makes me miss the community from back in those days. Borderlands 2 was by far the best borderlands game in the series.

It's a NECESSARY crutch because some people cannot heal fast enough, UVHM means you're constantly getting shot to bits, and the OP mode means you're attempting a playthrough while afflicted with terminal cancer.

This was fun! I'm diggin this channel so far. I always had a soft spot and beef with this weapons which I argued about for YEARS in the forums especially when it came to Gaige and even some of the stuff you said in this video. Either way still fun watch. Thanks for posting.

The grog having 60% transfusion and in later op levels being 200-300k damage meaning only 2 shots would full heal and any damage from other weapon on swap healing plus the drunk effect made it wildly broken

I didn't know this. I mostly used the grog nozzle for slagging in UVH cuz it's basically impossible without it. To be fair, I was an Axton main, so I couldn't really abuse it as well as other classes (that and Axton is really weak) but the transfusion was great for not dying. Still, it did really increase the power level in general cuz ya didn't need to spec points into survivability

Because I've played hellborn Krieg all the time, Elemental Empathy prevented me from ever needing the grog nozzle. I see every other character depending on it and I cant help but think it seems so constricting to always have one weapon slot permanently filled with the same pistol.

Great vid, but a little surprised you didn't talk about the controversial aspect of it - Many people at the time, and even today, believe using the grog was almost like cheating as it was DLC only and as a quest only item, "you were never supposed to actually keep it or use it in other things". It definitely is pretty broken, but almost a necessity at late OP levels.

I'm one of those people who have always hated this item. Things like the Bee are already horrifically designed, and this is another one that just becomes a crutch/patch for terrible balance scaling. I never use the Grog or Bee in my plays, as I personally get zero enjoyment from using those items. I'm still generally able to claw my way to max OP if I want via very careful play and patience, but I'm certainly way slower than I would be if I just Bee'd. It's the same reason I absolutely loathe the ReVolter in BL3 - just a stupid, braindead, unnecessary item that you absolutely do NOT need in that game. It just ends up becoming a massive crutch for players with poor builds since the ridiculous damage covers up build flaws, rather than making you address your deficiencies.

When you think about it, it's kind of extremely silly that the most popular gun is that popular because of an exploit. I wonder how many players would go as far as they did if they ever fixed it.

Yeah. The same people who decry the evil smasher glitch or any exploit based on similar mechanics yet praise the grog nozzle for the same thing annoy the hell outta me. And if the higher difficulties basically require it for most players then the balance of those difficulties was for for worsely balanced than assumed. Needing an exploit to make a game fair is stupid.

For slagging enemies I mostly relied on Magic Missile, Florentine and even the Siren’s special melee ability that shoots out a big slag ball for slagging enemies. Magic Missile regenerates and homes in on enemies, Florentine not only slags but deals shock damage basically letting you damage an enemy as you try to slag them, and the Siren’s special slag ability basically lets you cast a free slag attack every now and then into a group of enemies that are right in front of you. Never really needed the grog nozzle to be honest.

Same here, I remember having a grog nozzle at one point, but I didn't really use it. The Firehawk/Krieg thing sounds kind of fun to try, but also sounds like it would get old rather quickly. I was more interested in having the Rough Rider using the hulk out skill and melee killing enemies to restore my health when I first played him

Most of the moxxi weapons kinda became crutches since they all had life steal but the rest were fun to build around. Like salt the wound fire kreig with the fire hawk shield and heartbreaker. The slippery crit and hail are like the only ones that are bad tbh (the crit can be amazing though)

The grog nozzle sounds defs like a crutch, the way you describe it as a weapon that overrides the need for survivability skills reminds me of the release version of the Grinder Perk Deck for Payday 2. The one where at the time, you could literally run Overkill heists at level 0 and could also choose not to pick survivability skills and instead opt for both Utility skills such as the Technician skill tree and pistol skills for akimbo to improve in fire rate for the stronger pistols.

I used a bladed grog for UVHM solo on Zer0. It was... very, very, very strong. Due to overkill, i couldn't be oneshot, and i could heal all my HP with every melee hit. So long as I had an enemy within arm's reach, i was hard pressed to die.

Haven't touched OP10, but coming off of multiple thousands of hours on OP8. Using a grog on Maya or Krieg is just kinda silly, they don't need it at all and still pump out plenty of damage. Axton also doesn't need it, but it sure does help. Fastball+grog is a very fun way to play him Not trying to downplay the grog at all, it's ridiculous, but it's not a 100% must have like a lot of people will claim

goddam, that combo would DELETE anything. Even Terramorph, which was considered hardest (or one of the hardest) bosses at the time. You pay 4 eridium, walk in the boss arena, shoot a mag into the boss and hes dead, just like that. I was pretty bummed out when they patched this but i was a kid back then :P

As a melee zer0 player: Ya gots to have a rapier, to do enough dmg to chainkill AND you have to set it up properly. Meaning you have to drop the entire mob to about 50-60% hp, have them slagged, have a Terra-Shield equipped and have your shields dropped, then enter deception, Kunai enemy#1, kill it, throw Kunai on enemy#2, kill it, etc. No, without "Death Mark" dmg bonus, roid bonus and the 200% of the rapier it does not work reliably (well, maybe against the lowest garden variety types). The Nozzle (Ruby doesn't cut it for the Glasscannon) comes out when Decepti0n is on CD and/or the target is in Killing Bl0w HP range.

7:05 at level cap not really. You already have pretty much all the damage you can get in cataclysm. Then you'd either go for scorn or sub-sequence in a regular gun build, and you have the points to get life tap either way. I'd use grog while leveling though.

Man I miss when gearbox weren't afraid to let us absolutely break the games apart. I really cant get into BL3 or wonderlands because everything is constantly nerfed, and it makes working on a build discouraging when it gets nerfed.

One of the main reasons I stopped playiong BL3 was because they Nerfed Flak for like no reason. But gearbox has a track record with that kinda thing, like nerfing deathmark stacking on zer0 in BL2 while leaving moneyshot (the skill that one hits raid bosses) alone. Like if you're gonna try to balance the game, do it. Don't just nerf things randomly.

I both love it and hate it... I like the drunk effect that gives you extra free projectiles BUT the healing and how it felt like the end game was built around it was absolutely stupid... granted, anything healing in BL2 is really sad, im fortunate to play Krieg and that usually allows me to play however i want instead of clinging to Moxxi weapons or Fusion nades...

I never use the grog. 1 - I'm not a super technical player and I don't dip into the "pro strats" much and 2- I usually main krieg and I spec into the buffs from having low health

Games like Borderlands are great I own all of them and all add ons but once I get OP the games suck for me. I never farm for anything, once you start that long farming process the game turns into a job. And I never use exploits. Salvador just happens to be a walking exploit so I rarely play him.

Grog isnt a crutch because at any op level higher then 3 slag is a necessity and in some content even without op levels it still is say saying grog which is only used for slag is a crutch is like saying your slag betties for taking on terra is a crutch
