Once you figure out how to navigate the bizarre world of never believing any launch review of a AAA game, I've discovered that the most valuable reviews come from a few reviewers I've found with similar tastes to my own. I have a few go-to reviewers who've said "This game is flawed, but I had a lot of fun with it". So I grab the game on sale at some point, and (surprise surprise) I have fun with it.

This video is such a good reminder that negative reviews get more clicks! Also, screw easy-mode shaming lol sometimes I just want to play a game for good story and not waste several hours fighting the same boss

Tbh, Chaos legion is one of the few CAPCOM games that I wish to have a reboot, alongside other "forgotten" CAPCOM games, like Breath of Fire series.

I remember when "DMC: Devil May Cry" came out I watched a review on this to see if I might like it and was completely turned off of it just on hearing the reviewer describing one scene and the character's reaction to it, so didn't bother buying it. A long time later I picked it up in a sale (it was about 90% off at that point) but still didn't bother playing it. It was much, much later when I needed hard drive space on my PS4 that I decided to give it a go to get it out of the way so I could delete it and what I found was that I had so much fun with it and enjoyed the story so much that I still haven't deleted it. I know that's another game that still has it's haters, so to them all I can say is: if we both buy a copy of a game that I enjoy but you don't then I win. So there!

I really enjoyed this video. It's strange how some devs mock easy mode players. Heck I'm extremely visually impaired so easy mode is my go to, in hopes that will somewhat negate the issues I'm going to have. Again great video as always.

Another example of this phenomenon of the internet/public discourse shaping the way we think about games that I've experienced is that I've caught myself thinking about gaming in general from a perspective that is completely removed from my personal preferences. These days, I often play games as though I was a critic myself. I think about how what aspect of a presentation is attempting to add this or that to whatever discussion is currently of particular interest to whoever is currently yelling the loudest on social media, for example. Or how a dev or publisher is attempting to capitalize on current trends and the like. Which may - in theory - be interesting topics to think about, but I've found it has slowly turned me into more and more of a cynic. Not to mention the fact that it's me paying lip service to something I generally could not care less about more often than not. It's as though I'm continuing someone else's discussion. While I can't be 100 percent sure about whether this development started externally or whether I'm just becoming a curmudgeon, I do know that none of that was part of why I originally started enjoying videogames in the first place. In any case, I definitely think that online discourse in general - not just in entertainment media - has an intense slant towards the negative and prejudicial and I can't see that being healthy psychologically. EDIT: Good god I'm rambly.

20:05 This earned my subscription. I've been screaming this exact thing into the void for years. Everyone is on a race to reach the peak of irony and outrage but no one wants to talk about the things they actually like about video games. Not every game is Superman 64 or Sonic 06 but based on reviews you'd think every 3rd release was exactly that.

I feel like the "Western" Silent Hill games are another good example of this phenomena. Most of them are perfectly okay to pretty good horror adventure games that have at least a few redeeming qualities or are better than the sum of their parts. But most people barely gave them a chance because by then Konami was doing such a poor job of managing the IP and the games had the audacity to live in the shadow of one of the greatest games ever made.

You mentioned old Demo Disks. I've mentioned before an old Mega CD Game called "Keio Flying Squadron" (seriously, watch a longplay!). Well they made an error with the free demo disk that made it almost as valuable as the original, even to this day. You see, they'd put the entire game on the demo disk but added a bit of code to reset the game after the first level. What they forgot to do however was remove the Level Skip cheat. This meant that if you had the Demo disk you could get to the end of level 1 and then after it reset put in the code to skip to level 2 and finish the entire game. :)

Your thoughts on review bias is exactly we have cult classic works. Not just video games, but also movies, shows, anime, etc. Plenty of horror & sci fi works fall into this biases as these genres are more common in breaching the boundary of weird & trends.

I often have that reverse experience of watching movies with meh reviews and being like "Eh, its okay enough, like I can nitpick stuff, but fun in good company and not really worth complaining about"

Another great video and I completely agree with you here. I often feel like I allow reviews to run my life and, rarely, do I purchase - or download from Gamepass - a game before checking out reviews.

This game would probably have been super cool back in the day during PS2 era.. I probably would have been interested in it if I only had played on Sony consoles during that time.

Hideyuki Fukasawa made 2 of my favorite soundtracks of all time. Both Onimusha Dawn of Dreams and Chaos Legion capture an apocalyptic feel.

The most important thing about art for me is how every individual person experiences it for themselves. Either it speaks to you, or it doesn't. On the internet however, it feels like opinions and experiences are being formed for the individual. Instead of experiencing the piece of media for myself, I looked up online reviews and after a while, it just made me miserable. Especially because I have a very poor self esteem, listening to big RU-vidrs takes on art certainly did not make it better. Especially because way too much online "criticism" relys on being as negative as possible, because it get's more clicks. "DISASTER", "TRASH", "GARBAGE" etc., it's so fucking exhausting. Staying off from the internet and social media and spending more time with myself, in the REAL world, as well as forming my own opinions on the media I'm interested in, gave me a gigantic self esteem boost. I don't care anymore, what big RU-vidr XY has to say, instead I value the conversations I have with the people I actually care about. It's so much more fulfilling to me. But that's just my opinion of course :D

Though somewhat unrelated at least regarding Chaos Legion, this sentiment shined so true when it came to Cyberpunk 2077, anytime i said anything positive or anyone really there would be people instantly talking down on the game and it just got so boring so quickly, i personally thoroughly enjoyed it and loved my time with it. As always i love your topics that you cover Jinzee! Also also, you're so close to 100k subs! Ahhh, you genuinely deserve it 😄 keep up the stellar work :)

Writing the response to if the game sounds fun before continuing the video: It does indeed sound fun but if the first thing I was told is that you can summon legions to fight your enemies, I'd be very disappointed to learn that a legion is just a single creature. Not that I would hold that against the game. Edit: answering the second question: I probably wouldn't want to try it based on what you said of the story but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

As always you are on point. I felt exactly the after seeing some bad reviews on Final Fantasy VIII and last january I picked it up again from my shelf to take my nostalgia shot and I couldn't stop to love it. Every game is not for everyone that's all. Keep on Proper Bird, love your work.

I feel much less defensive that way and can actually enjoy things without the pressure of wondering if it’s “good” (tm). I love the way you explained it.

What I fail to understand is while early reviews like for Cyberpunk like you said, are so impactful in our perception of a new game release, it seems more and more games come out unfinished these days

I'm from México, I remember renting this game in a local business that imported very strange, niche games like it. After the first rent I never found it again but I fell in love with it, even though I didn't understand a word of English at the time.

Really interesting discussion! One of my favorite animes growing up, that spent a lot of time bouncing in and out of my "Top 3 of All Time," was Fushigi Yuugi. A few years ago I looked it up online, and was shocked to find the reception had been mixed to negative. But for me it was amazing... haven't rewatched in a long time, but bet it still would be, and the music is still in my playlist. I enjoyed The Bouncer too!

Well said. The game industry and community definitely has a problem with the idea that a game can simply be...decent. Average. Okay. You see this in the review scores too; most outlets seem to use a 5-10 grading, not a 1-10 scale. Rant: I recently ran into this very problem myself when I played a game called Hauma. It has...problems. The ideas are cool but the execution is rough to say the least. I even ran into a gamebreaking bug that forced me to start my playthrough anew. While I was writing my Steam review, I hesitated the entire time whether I should give it a thumbs-up or not. My preference would've been a neutral rating, but Steam doesn't allow that; I can either recommend the game or not. I can either be positive or negative. And that just perfectly encapsulates how people seem to think about games. I did end up giving the game a positive review. Despite its many problems, I just couldn't see the game as bad. It was mediocre, but I enjoyed poking around in it. However, my only way to express this was by writing a sizeable review outlining what the game does, because the rating system on Steam is so inflexible. I doubt many people will see that review and I suspect even fewer will read it in its entirety. The nuance that forms my opinion on that game will be forever lost under the thumbs-up I gave it. And the thumbs-up is the only thing that contributes to the game's reception.

Don't worry too much. We come to Proper Bird specifically to find the in-depth part of the under the radar games; or at least I do. Also use Volt, he can just keep dive-bombing everyone in the Bouncer.

For me Chaos Legion was a “well, I bought it and this is all my game money for the next x amount of time so by God I’m playing it at least 3 times through.” games. Fond memories, though. I remember you could uppercut enemies into the air and have the little crossbow guys juggle them.

I think this is such an interesting take. Just recently, I found myself wondering if I was even playing my games the right way - while playing Life is strange and MADiSON with a few friends (two fairly different games in terms of genre and play style 😅) - and even searching for "better solutions" in the internet instead of exploring the games by myself and creating my own unique kind of gameplay and storytelling. For me, there's just this pressure of having "the best possible experiences" instead of just enjoying what's in front of me...

I very much think this is in part because people seem to forget to draw the line between subjectivity and objectivity. The way I learned to draw the line was with music. I realized that I could appreciate an artists work for being objectively important or noteworthy, but subjectively not enjoy it. Conversely just because a piece on music was bad didn't make my enjoyment of it wrong. For Cyberpunk 2077, I think the story fails on every level to tell a compelling cyberpunk story and I have MASSIVE issues with the worldbuilding.... but it was really fun. And at the end of the day, thats all a game needs to be.

So legitimately rented this game from Blockbuster back in the day and I liked it but never got too far into it. Also for your shadow hearts talk so I never actually got to try any of the other shadow hearts games the only one I played when I was younger was From the new world and I really did like it back in the day I loved Frank and his whole silliness and I honestly wonder if I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if I had played the others. Also love love love me the Onimusha games and loved your video about it. Truly happy to have found this channel.

I think it is a right decision to hold on playing CP2077 until its final form. Despite me loving the game, I still have so much gripes with the game & CDPR as a whole. I simply can't turn that off. You know, the basic disappointment stuffs, etc.

I really enjoyed this video, I've always playing games since I was a child and I've developed a anxious behavior playing games in front of anyone, specially my sister and my dad, they've always mocked me for not playing on hard mode or to just being bad at some things (specially puzzles) turns out I'm not that bad but I put so much pressure that I can't act. Just when I've moved out my parents house I've explored this side of "playing should be fun" and not forcing myself into playing hard mode if I don't want to. We should be able to play games even if they're not a masterpiece and even if we're not professional gamers !

Regarding achievements: I very much enjoyed Mass Effect but with my pathological need for the best ending I feel rising pressure to make the right decisions ending in me quitting emotionally drained after one hour because I spent 10 minutes on decision making...

Another for you if you don't know it is "Gungrave" on the PS2, which in many ways is a classic betrayal/revenge story but has a lot more depth when you look into it. They've done an anime series of it which is really good.

Came across your Koudelka and Shadow Hearts vids. And this vid's insights have been very helpful! The comments on Hades' Heat system were really enlightening. I play Arknights, a game with a similar mechanic where during certain events you can add buffs to the enemy and debuffs to your own team, and I wondered why achievements and resources couldn't be gained after a certain point. Other people on youtube show off their "Max Risk (Heat)" clears so it seemed to me that a notable portion of the playerbase would challenge themselves that way But while those of us who devote too much time into that game might find achieving higher-than-rewarded risks entertaining, it makes sense if the developers want to set a hard cap on difficulty to allow many players to reach it. Set the bar too high, and you risk alienating and exhausting the fanbase. That's something I didn't really consider, thank you!

I get what you mean with covers. Like with books, European versions are so pretty while North American ones are worse, often deciding to add a person's face to the cover. Going back to games I love playing as a tank in FFXIV, pulling a lot of stuff and doing lots of damage. I know I'm not technically good at it as I don't use my cool downs as best as I should, so I often feel like I best just play DPS as it's enjoyable and I don't have to worry about dragging other people down. So, I definitely get what you mean about people saying you have to play a certain way. Though I'm very glad I have Francis to sometimes play with me and she'll be healer cause I can have fun playing tank as I want as she can handle my shenanigans. This was really great video by the way. I thoroughly enjoyed it and sorry for going a bit off on a tangent. ❤

Personally I go by the metric: Game sounds/looks interesting = I play it Game sounds/looks meh = Usually only if my friends want to play it. Game sounds/looks shit = I pass Also, my main source of information is official marketing material or my friends. I hardly ever read or watch reviews, and when I do I mostly click through them because it's pretty boring listening to someone cry about how a game should be made or why a game is too difficult.

This video actually describes exactly what happened to Castlevania 64... a lot of people have been calling the worst of the series and I honestly believed that until I got to play it, the game is not bad despites some flaws for being one of the earliest 3d Castlevanias, but suffered a lot due to the reviews of Legacy of Darkness which, was not a bad game but it had a lot of things that got repeated between playthroughs... sometimes we let our judgement be swayed by people who we look up to. I have also played Chaos Legion and I loved it as a child and I am surprised to see how many people say they hate it.

I think a lot a people didn't spend enough time with the game to truly understand the intricacies of the different Legions. They came in expecting a game similar to Dynasty Warriors or Devil May Cry, but they got neither. Though flawed, Chaos Legion is a great example of the experimental game designs big-name developers and publishers toyed with in that era.

The weirdness that hit me was that I seem to have been recommended people who (well, potentially) speak the language I have been trying to learn just out of interest. I had never updated anything anywhere and even if I did, well it's still recommending people talking in English so it's a very curious case lol. This video is very relevant to my current gaming endeavor, which is to collect everything I didn't lock myself out of in Elden Ring before attempting the final boss. I have my list of collectibles on hand, the wiki on another screen, and man the amount of bashing the ENTIRE GAME AS A WHOLE gets from some people in the comments when they decide one weapon is not 100% perfectly balanced in insane sometimes. "From Software cannot code for s***", "Poor little indie game company cannot afford to balance anything", and so on. Meanwhile Elden Ring is a huge, expansive game with a gorgeous art style, super rewarding exploration, nearly infinite customization options,... but this specific weapon is a little too good and allows anyone to beat the game without any effort (it doesn't), so the game is trash. What.

Yeah, this is basically the reason why I've stopped watching RU-vidrs who have incredibly angry personas in their videos since listening to their reviews of games has made me ignore games that ended up becoming some of my all-time favorites later on.

I loved The Bouncer when I played it. Think I rented it from Blockbuster. Never finished it, but found the hate for it... Weird

I avoided FF15 for 5 years on account of the negative press. I bought the Royal Edition on a steep discount for $6.50 brand new at Best Buy and am loving it so much that I'm at 140 hours and still only halfway through the main story. Next up is the FF13 trilogy that I never gave a chance for the same reason.

This was me with Dragon Age 2, I loved the hell out of that game, only found out it was supposed to be bad when I started following the release of Dragon Age Inquisition, then I realised everyone hated it except for me (it felt like at the time). Also Cyberpunk 2077 really has a fantastic story and characters and did from the start. I’m, as they say in reading communities, a “character focused reader”, and if a game gets me to fall in love with the cast I’m gonna enjoy the heck out of it. Haters gonna hate. 😂

Chaos legion is the best hack n slash game I played growing up during ps2 era . I loved DMC but after beating them I felt empty like what else is there to do. Instead with chaos legion I kept revisiting and grinding out leveling my legions. But it's also the reason I Bought Astral Chains which is like the Switch's Verizon of this game . But I still go back and revisit CL every now and again .

It's sad to see people on the internet (and offline too, from my experience) try to make others feel bad for liking something that they don't because it has some noticeable flaws. I've been one of those people and I understand why it's an issue. It's the same reason why T.V. shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000 are so enjoyable: it's fun to make fun of things you don't like with others. But there are things, even in bad games, movies, etc. that are genuinely good and make people happy. When I voice a negative opinion about a game, etc. I'll try to state clearly "I don't like this" so that it sounds subjective, rather than objective. It's my preference that has me feeling that way, not anything solid in the work. Also, I phrase it that way to hopefully avoid implying that I think people who do like whatever piece of work are lesser in whatever way. So it's not "This game is so stupid, I don't understand why anyone would like it!" to "I don't like this game, because X, Y, and Z ruin the experience and fun for me." I mean, I've really had to emphasize that when WoW became the juggernaut that it did. I tried it multiple times, and could just never get into it. I've tried other MMORPGs, and I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like those kinds of games. It happens. I'll give a couple of more positive examples of me either trying something that I heard bad reviews on, or liking something that has a lot of negative criticism. For the former example, I will cite a game from the XB360/PS3 era called "X-Blades". It's a deeply flawed hack-and-slash game with very flat characters. The characters really have no personality at all, with the most notable thing about the player character being her ridiculously skimpy outfit. I decided to try the game out after seeing it on sale for $2USD and wow was it a mess! I had a lot of fun riffing on it to friends, though. However, the game's flaws also helped me to realize and appreciate something else: hack-and-slash games actually sound really difficult to do well. The mechanics are such that they have to provide the player with a diverse number of attacks, encourage them to use all those attacks in different combos, make the camera behave so that the players can see what they're doing, point out environmental advantages, secrets, etc. without holding the player's hand, and really do all of this without making it obvious. With that realization, I did actually come to appreciate the game, though I won't say I liked it. It also encouraged me to seek out that studio's follow-up; "Blades of Time". That game still has a number of flaws, but the devs learned from a lot of the flaws of their previous venture! For an example of the latter, a game that I thoroughly enjoy, but other people do not, look not further than "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain". Oh boy. So...the story? It's uhmm...well one of the criticisms I've heard is that the story doesn't really make any sense. I agree with that criticism. Another criticism is that there are weird examples of fanservice that make people uncomfortable, particular concerning a side character named Quiet. I agree with this criticism as well. Unfortunately, MGSV is not really a game you can just jump into with no knowledge of the previous installments. It is a VERY weird game, but if you have played the other MGS games, you know that's Kojima's hallmark. There are a lot of plot mechanics that are clunky because of the number of things that Kojima has retconned. Some people, myself included, have learned to just shrug and roll with it. But if somebody tells me they don't like the game, I'll say "Oh yeah, I don't blame you."

Your summary of the script/story makes it sound like it was written by that wannabe author in P5 Strikers.

As someone who really loves the Soulsborne series, I find it rather funny how people claim there was ONE way to enjoy these games, given how every tool in this game is there to adapt to your personal play style. Especially those berating people for using the ashes... I really don't get it. I mean, given how integral they were to the games advertisement, I felt like FromSoft really *wanted* the players to use them however they find it necessary and have fun with them.

I got this game really cheap, love it. Very underrated gem. I still have my physical copy in my PS2 collection... Oh and I love the Chaos Legion main theme, I would listen to it all the time back then.

I am always aggressively open about only playing games on easy or the lowest difficulty. I refuse to feel shame for trying to finish as many games as fast as possible and hope that saying what difficulty I play on normalizes it for others!

The randomness, and assumption that we consumed every piece of random media associated to the game reminds me of the chaotic mess we call Kingdom Hearts.

I had the exact experience with a game called drakengard to the letter. Loved as a young teen. Found out as an older teen it had a bad rep. Played again and almost only saw the flaws. Been trying to grapple a lot with positivity these days. Seeking it out when I can and and I'm starting to get over that hump to where now I can just enjoy things. Still read reviews here amd there though I gotta admit, most times I don't get a lot out of them. Mainly I know my own tastes well enough by now to be pretty sure whether I'll like something regardless of what I hear about it.

Negative reviews usually have the opposite effect on me, I go in with low expectations and end up pleasantly surprised, except in the case of DS2, I feel like everything they said was wrong with that game and everything it was praised for for were accurate.

I’m playing Cyberpunk right now, after having it for 2 years lol. I had to leave my ps4 on all night while it downloaded all the patches before I finally got to play it. I love it so far, tbh. I ignore the internet when it comes to games I want to play. Reviews are only helpful if I’m on the fence

First off you're about to hit 100k subs really proud of the growth here and on Twitch Second, I agree, Resonance of Fate is a game I thoroughly enjoy but is usually mixed also most Sonic games fall into this bucket. Third, however, I can see why consumers depend on reviews. Games cost $60 + add-ons and so on. No one wants to regret a purchase.

this is exactly how i feel lately. even watching reviews after you play the game may affect your appreciation to it. I abolustely LOVED twelve minutes, and avengers, aand No Man's Sky. But reading reviews took me away from trying them for years. I quit watching reviews of games i want to play.

I vaguely remember reviews about it from around that time, and they match what you're saying. Just an average game. I think people imagine reviews worst than they ever were. And i don't think most people are looking for negativity either.

Love shown for Chaos Legion - I sub. Simple as that. Wait... also love for Koudelka and Onimusha? If I could double and triple sub - I would. But on topic: The only thing that makes you hate a videogame more than a bad faith critic who is just looking to mock something for cred is the person who overpraises one game and causes you to hate it by association. Chaos Legion is part of that PS2 era of highly experimental action games when devs were still poking around what works and what doesn't - it doesn't change the fact that controlling legions was a novel idea and something that was only (somewhat) recently redone with Astral Chain in 2019. Yeah, Chaos Legion was a mid-budget game with not the best quality, but at least it was interesting in what it did.

Another quick one for you. I've been going through my PS2 collection again and one game I thought you might find interesting, both for the story as well as how people felt the PS2 version was handled, is "Maken Shao - Demon Sword". If you don't already know that one then give it a look when you have time.

I honestly had to relearn how to just... enjoy things. I've always had a certain tolerance for janky/buggy games, due to growing up with older tech. Our PC growing up was always second hand and so if a game ran at all, that was fine. Then in highschool I got really into competitive games, and "playing the right way", I spent more time upset at games I was playing than anything. One day I just... stopped. I decided it was better to try and find why things were fun, instead of nitpicking for reasons to decide it was bad. The last 8 years or so of gaming, and enjoying media in general, for me have been great! Some of my favorite games have been weird and a bit buggy, and when people are ripping apart a show or movie adaptation over details I'm usually just pleasantly enjoying a it.

Amazing video and a really interesting topic that I was recently thinking about. I've been playing games for roughly 25 years now and I definitely had a period where I would "follow the words of the angry crowd", but over the last 5-6 years I learned not to take other people's opinions as facts, they are just that, opinions. I do read/watch reviews but at the end I am the one that makes the choice, if I like what I see and think I would enjoy it, I'll buy it. This way I enjoyed plenty of "bad games" that I would otherwise probably not have played. Anyway, I really dislike this outrage culture, it's like a group of people that just waits for a game not to meet their expectations and then shred it to pieces online like it's the worst thing ever.

Man you deserve more views, your content has a refreshing take on some more niche JRPGs. Really dug the Shadow Hearts vids.

Wolfenstein's difficulty setting wasn't the first time, in Wolfenstein 3D back in 1994 it had the same options so if anything it was a callback in the new order that i appreciated but i also think Easy mode should be renamed to "Game Journalist" Mode I played Chaos Leigon and i had alot of fun with. after Devil may cry it was one of my favorite action games. I do agree Reviews and Hype can affect how we enjoy a game but i think the opposite is true. the nothing but praise for Horizon Zero dawn, all the scores are high and people just gushing about the game. i played it. i had lik 6 to 7 hours and i just do not enjoy playing it. i sank 5 hours into the game just to have a friend say "oh you are still in the starting area" and my desire to keep playing took a nose dive off a cliff with weights heading for the bottom of the Marianas trench. i tried for another 2 hours but the core gameplay was just not enjoyable for me. Every game should have a Demo

Barely remember any of the story other than the names, but I used to really like that game.

Oh hell yeah. I loved Chaos Legion. The soundtrack was absolutely bonkers.
