Karen Hall is a prolific TV writer, producer, and convert to the Faith. She has received seven Emmy Award nominations and six Writers Guild of America award nominations. Chances are excellent you’ve loved watched shows she has written. (Start the list with Hill Street Blues, M.A.S.H., Moonlighting, Northern Exposure, I'll Fly Away, Judging Amy and The Good Wife).
Her new book, her first non-fiction work, tackles the silencing of Father Paul Mankowski, SJ by the Jesuit superiors who could not abide a practicing Catholic in their midst. Mankowski, who died suddenly of an aneurysm on September 3, 2020, was a scholar, philologist, confessor, and professor of Scripture. He was also a writer of immense talent: charm, force, and wit.
He was modern in the sense of addressing contemporary crises with Catholic truth, but also a true son of the Company of Jesus more in the mold of its founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola than the typical lavender-liberal Jesuits that dominate the landscape today.
He was also silenced and sidelined by his superiors for Wrong Think. And yet, he obeyed and persevered to a degree that must be called heroic. Hall’s very enjoyable book is not just a spiritual biography, but a window onto the chain-of-command dynamics of the post Vatican II Catholic Church, which have become even more severe under the current Argentine regime in Rome.
In this episode, you will learn:
How Hall applied top-flight storytelling skills to tell the tale, with admirable detail, of an unheralded hero in the Church.
The reasons why Mankowski stayed and fought in his own way against Church corruption by remaining faithful to his vow of obedience come what may
How the faithful Jesuit’s witness led to an upgraded edition of her novel Dark Debts
The inciting incident-criticizing pro-abortion Jesuit Congressman Robert Drinan, SJ- that began his targeting by corrupt homosexuality superiors
Mankowski’s fervent, often humorous critique of the sacred cows of the Catholic left: feminism, liturgical innovation, and “social justicism”
Why we need more witnesses to the gospel without compromise

I have been calling the Faith the "Church of Silence" going back to my years when I was an altar boy in the Episcopal Church but attending a Catholic high school. The situation has not improved in some ways. Sadly the rot and predation goes back to the sixties. I'm a late-in-life convert and it is people like you two and the late Fr. Mankowski who have kept me in the Church. Wonderful interview and a surprising one. How much television and movies have changed from the years of Fr. Patrick Peyton.

Those who claim Pope Francis teaches heresy and error, are themselves ignorant of Catholic teaching and Canon Law and Holy Scripture! Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink!

Perhaps they are not so ignorant but rather see what in front of their eyes.

@@user-od4rw2ft7s The elders thought the same of Jesus Christ! They though "what the say in front of their eyes", was heresy and a demon! Yet, their eyes were truly blind, like those who claim Pope Francis teaches heresy and error, for in doing so, they are truly blind to Catholic teaching and Canon Law and Holy Scripture! What "in front of their eyes", is heresy and demonic in Pope Francis? As lies were told of Jesus Christ at His trial, so too even now of Pope Francis by modern day elders! Praying for their conversion! Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink!

@user-od4rw2ft7s what alleged heresy and demonic actions of Pope Francis are "right in front of their eyes?". The elders thought they too saw heresy and a demon right in front of their eyes in the actions and teachings of Jesus Christ! Again, those who claim Pope Francis teaches heresy and error, are themselves ignorant of Catholic teaching and Canon Law and Holy Scripture! As lies were told of Jesus Christ at His trial, so too even now of Pope Francis by modern day elders! Peace always in Jesus Christ our Great and Kind God and Savior, He whose Flesh is true food and Blood true drink!

Correction: the face of the Jesuits is the Pope, not Fr James Martin. 😑

The two are two peas in a bod. Perhaps the next Pope will be faithful to the gospel
