Without the Kawasaki KZ1000 we would never have the modern day sport bike. The Kawasaki KZ1000 had a monster engine for the time and paved the way for bikes of the future. Thank you for riding this beautiful KZ1000...man, memories of my ride from Gila Bend, AZ to Victorville, CA with my girlfriend on a brand new '77 KZ1000, dark green with chrome wire spokes cruisin' along the Salton Sea...such a cool time of my life. The weather was perfect at the start but eventually turned into rain then snow through the El Cajon Pass at 5000 feet elevation. My mom wrapped my girlfriend in an Army blanket then placed a large garbage bag over her like a poncho for the return trip. I wore a light jacket, no gloves and froze my ass off but man, what a thrill of a ride.

Growing up, my dad had a 78 KZ650SR. Several years after getting my m/c license, I found a 79 KZ650SR on eBay for ... cheap. It has needed some TLC over the past few years, but right now it's running great and I love taking it for a spin! Those old bikes are a lot of fun. I still want a new Z900RS though, but even used ones are asking close-to-new money. If you ever get a "root beer" 2018 or 2019 Z900RS, let me know!

I first owned a pair of Honda CB360s and then my third bike was a '79 KZ1000 and that thing was a rocketship compared to the Hondas. It's like it was built for the 1/4 mile because if you kept in it longer than that would take then the KZ would start getting a steering wobble. Its a beast

One thing I did notice when Sean was riding it ( I put this down to his young age lol ) is he changed gears like you would on a newer bike. With bikes like that and the 750/4 Honda with a Yoshimira kit in it, you snapped through the gears. This way you maintained the power band. Speaking from the 900, in 1974 there was a movie made here in Australia called Stone. In the start of the movie there was scene of a funeral. There were 40+ new Kwaka 9’s with the bikini fairing riding down the Carlisle expressway north of Sydney.

Back in good old 1978 my 7th grade math teacher was a bike nut. Motocross on the weekends showing up one week with a broken arm. Hit a tree mid flight over a mogul. Showed up one morning with a large abrasion under his chin. Asked him if he cut himself shaving. He laughed and said his bike got away from him doing a wheelie in front of his home. That bike was a gorgeous light green KZ1000 with Kanji under the KZ1000 plaque. We all watched him do a wheelie one time during one of our school football games. Pulled it off right there on the school grounds. Greatest teacher ever.

I got a real nice 75’ Z1b pretty much in stock form. Gotta have the ubiquitous 4/1 exhaust header. As for a comparison of a modern 600cc Sportbike is a full second quicker in a quarter mile. I know I got a ZX6R and a Z1 in the garage. A stock ZX6R will run an 11.2 @ 126mph and the Z1 a 12.3 @ 112mph. I’ve had my Z1b to a “speedo indicated” 145mph. The ZX6R to an indicated 172. Clearly no comparison to a modern sport bike. Which one would I be willing to sell.....well it ain’t the Z1. A pristine first year unrestored Z1 can go for as much as $23,000. A bike like mine in nice shape $10-12000. Beside the old Z1 turns heads at everywhere I go. People really love and appreciate these old Kawasaki bikes. Kinda like a 69’ Camaro. 😎 I know it wasn’t yours to thrash on, but you were no where near the power band. Get that thing up in revs and it will fly.

This is the bike my grandpa got I. A wreck on back in 1979, broke both of his legs, had to have half of his right heel removed, and had to have 5 skingrafts and was out of work for several months, and he still has pains from it today

I love the old Zeds. A Z650 was my daily ride for about 3 years back in the 90s, commuting 70 miles a day.

My first non-moped was an 82 KZ 750...bought it in summer of 85 when I turned 17. Nearly crashed on test drive. (How hard can a 45hp upgrade and this clutch-thingy be?) Couple years ago found an identical year and model barn special with only 3250 miles on it. Paid about the same as the original at $1150. Cleaned tank and petcock, replumbed vacuum lines, new battery and oil and she runs just fine. Every thing even works. Leaky fork seals, touch of valve clatter, and a low rpm soft spot barely distract from the nostalgiagasms.

To add more to the history...Kawasaki was to unveil a 750 four in 68..Honda released their cb750 before Kawasaki was ready with their bike...they regrouped and decided to keep H1 and later the H2 going while redeveloping the 750 into a liter bike..I bought a new Z1900 in dec of 72 ..no test ride..traded in a almost new CB 750 along with a small loan from my dad..later a 75 Z1B900 ..personally the 73/74s seemed faster as thru the first z1b thru the kz line they went from 28mm carbs and perkier cams to 26mms and more mid range cams along with emissions stuff in the kz years A must for the Z back then was a yoshimura billet swingarm that stopped the back wheel flex and gave a extra 1.5 inches of wheelbase..then gusset the frame under the tank..switch the forks left to right add another disc up front with the calipers behind the forks..some jetting and a yoshimura exhaust and that 80hp was bumping 100..ditch the wide stock bars for some BMW units similar to the ones on the kz here and you had a awesome bike ..in its day nothing could touch it I've had 7 Kawasaki liter bikes ..the latest a ZG1000 Concours I've had since 93..50,000 miles later still starts first try every time..no matter what else is in the garage a liter Kawasaki will be there too

The Kaw 900 started the super bike market, the Suzuki GS 1000 perfected it in 1978.

Those kz1000's Kickstart levers are famously dangerous, they like to snap back and on many occasions break legs

You come off as very intelligent in your videos which I enjoy watching. I just bought my first bike, its a 1985 Honda Shadow 1100. A little more than 13,000 miles on it. It is cherry. Your channel is very interesting and has given me helpful pointers. Thank you.

I had a fantastic KZ1000! The thing had been bored Port polished three and a half inch stretch in the rear set up as a drag bike! We threw on a headlight side mount for tag with cats eye brake light no blinkers or Speedo just a tachometer. just enough to get it tagged. Super wild bike... wish I hadn't Let It Go.

I just picked up a 86 zn1100B shaft drive. It's my second road bike. It needs some work but I'm super excited to ride it once I get it in working order.

I had this same motorcycle for 5 years. I rode it from Chicago to northern Wisconsin multiple times. Very comfortable and dependable. Selling it is one of the most stupidest things I've ever done, and I've owned and still own a lot of bikes.

Beautiful! I remember these well. Too well! I was a Honda guy back then. I experienced watching the tail light of these bikes get smaller at a rapid rate when I met one at a light. Frustrating!

I'm confused. The information on screen said this was a boxer 4. I thought a boxer engine had horizontally opposed cylinders and this was an inline 4. Sweet bike and a great vid as usual.
