I went with Z1 900 , welded the crank and put an OEM 1000 cc top end , worked the transmission with under cut gears , added a winding tray and engine transmission waste gate , top end with heavy duty valve springs & titanium retainers topped of with a stage one cam , the stock carb was replaced with the ZI R accelerator pump and the Z 1 air box with K & N filter. The pipe was a four into one designed specifically fro drag racing , I can’t for the life of me remember the brand but it was the hot ticket ! Extremely reliable and it could be hammered without any issues ! Great memories !
Cool, i am 67 and early 20's i had a 74 Z-1, Wiseco 1015 with the cylinder decked to the circumference of the piston, megacycle 417 lift cams with buckets, 29 smooth bores, Manley SS pro-flo valves, head decked about 030, gate in the oil pan to keep the oil in the front, good clutch springs, 1000 transmission, electronic ignition, crank pins welded, etc. a street bike but ran much stronger than a stock one, just had to wait for those long duration cams to kick in which was about 5000 but lets be REALISTIC it was a mid-high 12 second at about 103-105 mph bike stock with a pipe and a 14 tooth front sprocket, any modern 600 would DESTROY it but those old bikes were COMFORTABLE, not sleeping on the tank like a ZX-10. Considering the 'stock' performance those guys finding some SERIOUS power somewhere, even with a 1200 CC kit i think still be somewhere in the 11's without a slick and a good swingarm, a Z-1 now a 20-25 grand$$$$$$$$$$$$$ bike STOCK condition
Had a 79 KZ MKII 1000. Bought it in 2002 as a freshman in highschool. Aftermarket Weber carbs, Kirker headers, Vance and Hines exhaust, Orient Express cams, shaved the heads, ported and polished. Hurt lots of feelings with that bike.
My first Street bike was 1978 KZ650C2 bought it in 1983 when i was 14.. had a hole in #3 piston.. Found the valve in the oil pan.. Put a used 718 big bore kit and stage 3 cams.. ended up being super fast.. used to street race and race it at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown TX.

@@cycledrag i have to choose one?? thats not fair... id love to have several of each in various year models and sizes.. im actually currently looking for a restorable 1978 KZ650C2 now to restore to showroom conditions... as it was my 1st street bike... i feel i need one.. i have a kz1000 now... and have had many kz's along the way... would love a kz1300.. a Z1.. Z1R.. hell, any and all would be great.. and im serioulsy thinking a NEW Z900RS might be fun to tool around on... i dont buy many brand new bikes... but the throwback styling kinda grabs me... i've been collecting BMW boxer bikes and old Hondas lately.. cant have too many of any kind of motorcycle..
I had a 1982 KZ-1100 that the previous owner had heavily modified. Her name was "Salty". She was pretty quick. Street/strip bike that ate up newer bikes that were 20+years newer with same CC's.
gotta nice 900LTD in the house. 29mm smoothbores, K&N cones, Dyna ignition, original seat and everything else. So much fun to be on the road and get thumbs up from people.

After many years in the garage, I'm just getting my old 80 KZ1000 back together with my Dad's help. He's porting it and we have a 1075 cylinder and pistons, cams, and we are hunting down a set of smoothbores. Man I can't wait to hear it growl again. Rode the wheels off of it when I was younger. Hopefully someday I can get it looking as purty as yours. Sweet bike you have there.
Degree the cams unless they're the mild 'drop-ins' i had 417 megacycle cams in my 74 Z-1 late 70's, had to WAIT on that power to 5000-5500 though but rev and make power to just over 10, buckets required
Have a 1974 Kawasaki Z1-900 that was a collaboration of craftsmanship between Bob Moshinskie, Paul Gast, and Ron Gardner! It's a Vance&Hines theme bike that has a 1197cc engine, with a Mk2 cylinder that has over size valves, street strip port, and special ground cams. 34mm flat slides. Bottom end is bullet proof with Ron Gardner doing his magic on. Sports a 5 1/2" rear wheel and 180 Avon cobra tire. 4-6" over extended swing arm, period correct. Suspension is nothing special, just a good set of rear shocks, preload and dampning. Front has set of beefy springs to prevent bottoming out. Stock front brake, good pads, stainless brake line. Has two step, shift minder, and it tachs out at 10,200 vs. the 8,200 stock. Been on a dyno and produced 127hp and 74ft pounds of torque. Not bad?

@@cycledrag Once I had become aware of the company Sanctuary, I would do a chassis similar to their design. Ohlins suspension front and rear, stabilize the frame. As for and engine? I think I'd like to see if I could incorporate a turbo to a Ward Vortex 2 head? Can you imagine the cfm numbers flowing through something like a set up? I'm not sure if it could be done? I do know I'd like to have the engine powder coated for durability. And to top off the look, a beautiful hand bent, tig welded exhaust.
I was a 125 lb. mechanic at Kawasaki M/C world when they first came out . I used to go to N Y National Speedway and ride 5 or 6 Z1's a day for the new owners. They all ran low 12's as printed in the owners manuel. Thanks Guy Dalton and Jacy O"malley. Great bikes and times.

I had 3 Kawasaki KZ1000's .a 1978, 1980 built strictly for the track ( ran mid 9's aprox. 145 to 150 mph ) that was fast for 1980. I also had 1982 LTD1000. LOVED THEM ALL.
Love these bikes! First bike 81 KZ 550, second bike 76 KZ 900.... fast forward 40 years, just bought a 2021 ZX 14 r - the green runs strong in this one!

I owned a low miles ‘77 jetted, air cleaners and a pipe throughout the nineties and early Y2K’s. Rode it and bracket raced it for years. With stock gearing and tire size it’d run consistent 13.0’s @113 winding it out through the lights in third gear to 9500. The most comfortable bike and it NEVER broke. In 2016 I had the pleasure to build a stock appearing ‘79 with 1105cc 12.5 Weisco’s, Webcam, big valves, carbs and porting for a customer. I never got to take that one to the track but, on the street it definitely needed more tire!

The Kawasaki Z-1 and KZ 900, 1000's are a big piece of history, I've owned every year except a 1973 Z-1, but that's next!!! Hopefully I find a barnfind and all there, I will restore it back to original!!! Right now, I have a '76 LTD 900, ol' street racer, wouldn't take much to get it back all stock again!!! Kawasaki let the good times roll!!!👍👍

@@cycledrag I'll take any one of them from 1973-75 Z-1, 1976 KZ900, and KZ1000, as far as motor set up, 1197cc, undercut transmission, 4 inch over swing arm, pretty much almost stock appearance!!! It has to be really a street/strip combination, that's how my '76 LTD 900 is today, that whole configuration!!! Kawasa let the good times roll!!!
I love Marshall's bike. He's a very tough competitor in ohio with his bikes. Dudes a legend in ohio parts 💯 he's won tons of races at National Trails and always someone I looked up to in the bike class. Him and and family are awesome folks!

I had a need for speed in my younger days, and bought a 78 Z1-R brand new in 1978. Not into 1/4 mile drags, I preferred curvy roads and WFO straights for miles. Saw 150 between Amidon and Belfield, ND. Put over 100,000 miles on that motor with nothing more than regular tune-ups and oil changes.

My first street bike was a 77 kz650 ran great surprised a few newer sport bikes then I got a deal on a kz900 that sat for years so I took and rebuilt the 900 motor and squeezed it on the 650 frame and that bike was nasty

@@cycledrag The guy that sold me the bike said that it was. But I spoke to a collector. That it was just a kz 900. Due to the manufacturer date of assembly. Didn't really matter to me to be honest. I love the bike either way. It was mildly built, and set up for the 1/8 mi. Was a ton of fun to ride.

Mine was not a KZ but a 900 prior to the air pollution crap. 83 HP and I rode as an off duty Sheriff deputy in the mid 70s. Nothing ever kept up with me - EVER on the street.
My uncle had a kz900. He gave me a ride,I was hypnotized. My uncle Kenny said I squeezed him so hard . I was like velcro, gripping like my life was depending on it. That was 1977 I was 9 years old.
I’ve had four or five of these bikes and I sure wish I would’ve kept everyone I didn’t know they would be so rare back in the 80s you could buy them for 800 bucks
I bought a1982 kaw 1100 Spectre leftover in March of 84 oncei put the 1000 break in miles went ballistic great bike July 1986 closed local bar woke up 4 days later shock truma quit drinking once learned to walk again once healed bought used cbx still ride today gets in the blood free adrenaline

You can ride an old school bike and take on new school all day long but them old school fellas got to ease up at the dinner table if they want to be competitive.
