I don't think they tried to steal it back. They have an invisibility cloak, Filch is a Squib and Fred and George managed to get it in their first year. I think they left it on purpose because true mischief makers sure will spend some time in Filchs office and if they are up to no good and look around, even better

The first time I read the books I kind of thought the map was severely underrated and its portrayal didn't really do justice to just how frickin' amazing this thing is. It not only knows about secret passages that Filch doesn't, it knows the true identities of animagii and polyjuiced wizards, and it can track Harry through his invisibility cloak - the *deathly hallow* invisibility cloak - and this is something that four *teenagers* put together.

It's also possible that Hogwarts itself is a huge magical cage that tracks everyone inside, and the Marauders somehow found a way to tap in that tracking system, or rather, hacked the system.

Seems to me these locations would be tracked by the faculty already every year when the did protective charms over the grounds. Then somehow the marauders tapped into this 'data stream' to be visible on a piece of parchment.

has anyone done a discussion on how magic items are made in general? and how far could you go with creating magic items? is it difficult, expensive, and/or easy? what are all known magic items in harry, potter? there are a bunch of other things I cant think of at the moment. wonderfully job on these videos :3

The fact that Wormtail was a key part in making the map, yet the map was his downfall. Edit: The fact that he said he could get into Snape's office... Unless referring to while Ron and Percy were at school...

I wonder how the Weasley twins learned how to use the map. I mean, the sentence to activate it is rather peculiar...

How does the map show people laying down?

I think the Map would have to be made a bit differently. I mean, the map could accuratly show the position of everyone everywhere on the school grounds. It could do far far more than just tracking who is in which room. Furthermore, this would not even work outside and would not be able to show people moving in rooms or corridors. Both of those things we see in the books as well as in the movies.

I've toyed with the idea that they fiddled around "adapting" and combining spells to create the Map. For example, perhaps the homenum revelio spell was put into the Map once they'd figured out how to remove the swooping feeling so that no one would realize they were being tracked. I'd also bet that they borrowed some of Sirius' parents' Dark Magic books for parts of it, thinking they would be able to control everything, but that some ingredient or contract of making the Map functional also bound them to forfeiting their lives prematurely (not sure why it was in the reverse order of signing the contract, though).

You took the words out of my mouth at, '5:31', when mentioning that Dumbledore didn't catch on. Curse you, 'Harry Potter Theory'! Lol. The part regarding Wormtail explained much. Wait... Wait... If 'poly-juice' can't fool the map, how did Bart Crouch Jr. not get noticed? Of course.. Maybe no one was checking the map at the time, but, and a Huge But... With everything that was going on: the Tri-Wizard Cup; the Death-Eaters showing up at the Quidig finals; Snape and Karkoff snooping around; getting a heads-up with the prospective tasks involved, one would be lead to think that it could be very useful. I'm asking questions that can not be truly answered, unless we completely change the story. So I guess these questions could be discussed amongst us. I think that you put together an awesome hypothesis! There is just so many facts that took time to accumulate, but even more, the imagination and dedication to Harry Potter. I first saw Harry Potter about 18 months ago. Yes...! I believed that it would be something that I would not even be remotely interested in. I'm 46yrs. old, and I am, by far, a bigger fan than my 11yr. old daughter. It has been one of the most amazing movie series that I have ever watched! I can not go a day without watching your videos, and 1 or 2 others. Your narrating skills and voice are awesome! I have to watch some of the movies, my favorites are the 1st. three. In a world with negative things going on, I'm brought to a place that is positive. I have taken to watching my favorite parts of each movie. I love the 7 Harries. When Ron, Fred, and George rescue Harry from his room with the enchanted car. When Malfoy and Fang are running scared, in the background during detention in The Philosopher's Stone. Snape is my favorite character. The first time that I saw his death absolutely blew me away! Thank you.

I would write in the tiniest of letters on the back corner of the map, the phrase: I Solemnly Swear I Am Up To No Good. It would guarantee the maps continued existence even if forgotten for years in Filch’s desk as a confiscated item.

I always wondered how this was done, and if there were more, but I assume it´s the only one of it´s kind. I think the third film is one of my favourites.

Personally I believe dumbledore knew about the map and all the charms in the rooms but had faith in James, Sirius and Reamus that they would do the right thing And that it would eventually fall into the right hands like Harry, even the twins who are mischievous but good at heart

Since it's known that they didn't become animagi till 5th year, it would seem like an awful waste to not have the map done before than, I think they managed to find other ways of getting into those areas. Like maybe quickly mapping out certain teacher rooms when they would host them for detention.

My theory is more that the Marauders left it in Filch's office on purpose as that would be a likely place, troublemakers would end up at at least once in their school career. It really wouldn't have been difficult to break into Filch's office as he isn't magical and can't magically lock his door and him being on tour through the castle looking for trouble

It was also learned that there were places at and around Hogwarts that the Marauders, and therefore the map didn't know about such as the Room of Requirement and the Chamber of Secrets. The Chamber of Secrets was only a rumor; that is until Tom Riddle's diary compelledGinny Weasley to open it. As for the Room of Requirement, apparently Wormtail never found the ROR because not doesn't show up on the map. In fact, Harry only learned about this in his 6th year when he notice Draco Malfoy disappearing from the map at a certain location.

Does this mean that the marauders never knew and never entered the room of requirement or does the room or requirement have a charm that protects it from the spell? Since sirius never mentioned it to the trio as a potential room for the DA it could be that they never even entered the room (also fred and george didn't actively know about the room of requirement)

I wonder what scale the map has.

I believe the map recognize that Fred and George were up to no good and figure out how the map worked so they might have had help from the map itself. Also it been asked about why they never noticed when wormtail was seen on the map, they might have noticed Peter on the map, but were so young when he supposed to have died did not relealize who he was. Or they might have figured he was just a noughter student.

Idk if this has ever been answered but.. do squibs have the same life span of wizards or muggles?

I'm curious if it's possible to UPDATE the map like a GPS. I mean, is it possible to add things like the Chamber of Secrets location (something the Maurader's wouldn't have found) or even the general location of the Room of Requirement (granted, that room is capable of having different exit passages or even creating a secret passage out of Hogwarts to the Hogshead. So that's a big can of worms in and of itself.) I'm also curious if the Map will auto-update over time. You see things like "Hagrid's Hut" and even "Dumbeldore's Office" would have been there from the Maurader's time to Harry's time (well, minus Harry's year 7 in the case of Dumbeldore) but would ohter things, like the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher's office being changing every year with the new professor's name (I think the jink on the job happened at least before or during when James & Co were in Hogwarts.) Also, if, say, 200 years in, after Hagrid has certainly died a natural death, and perhaps his hut is no longer there, would it still show up on the Maurder's Map (like an outdated GPS) or would it now reflect the new change? If someone were, say, to expand onto the castle and add new wings, perhaps using emergency funding from the Ministry of Magic to repair the damage incurred during the Battle of Hogwarts to not only repair the damage but add new buildings and wings and rooms to the castle, would these show up on the Map or not? I'm also curious who could update the map, if it could be updated. Could anyone update the map (possibly leaving it open to sabotage and erasing current things) or could the Maurauders only do it? Is it possible that only the Mauraders or the descendants do it, meaning that only Harry Potter, James Potter II, Lily Potter II, Albus Severus Potter, and Teddy Lupin could update it after the death of Remus Lupin, the last Maurader.

I have an idea for a video: Was Voldemort shown on the Marauders Map during Harry's first year or not? And if he was shown, how?

I'm a bit curious, though, if the spell was cast by them, would the magic have started to wear out when first James, then Sirius, then Peter, and finally Lupin died, making the map useless after Lupin's death, if it was some sort of charm that helped do the mapping, or is it something that can survive the caster's death, like the Permanent sticking charm Mrs. Black put up her picture in the Black house?

I wonder.... between the marauders leaving hoģwarts and the Weasley twins acquiring it is quite a gap. I wonder if a certain rat was in possession of it during those missing years. With Sirius being in Azkaban and James being dead, that leaves Lupin and Pettigrew. Pettigrew had every reason to get around the school undetected. He was also the weasleys pet rat from the time Percy started at hoģwarts. Who was next to attend hoģwarts? Fred and George.... so perhaps Peter lost the map or hid it perhaps in the room of requirement and one of the twins found it (they would be been looking for something that aided their sneaking around and mischief making) and yet have no idea about the room only that it was a toilet that appeared when needed or a closet, nor it's potential to aid the DA in book 5.

If the tracking charm is powerful enough then you don't need to charm the room.. just make an accurate model of the room and enchant the model. It will track the room. How, you ask... BECAUSE ITS MAGIC, IT DONT NEED A HOW, JUST A WILL. And it was made by four boys who had strong will power. Yes Peter lacked confidence, but that's not to say he wasn't a skilled wizard. I lack confidence in my ability to play football, but I can throw a football with the best if them. I'm good at it.
