The morph mechanic in MTG is one that has been around for many years and requires you to play your cards in an interesting way -- face down on the table as generic creatures. In this video, we discuss the types of creatures that have morph and other effects that are capable of flipping a creature face down.

Just got into MTG. Bought a deck focused around Kaust, Eyes of the Glade. I had zero knowledge about this game, and am totally stoked at what I "chose" to be my first(?) deck ^^. I might just keep with this strategy. I love being mysterious haha

I have a question: can you morph ANY card?

I never heard of this mechanic before. The moment I heard face down my mind went "Yugioh?"

If you pay for the regular “full” mana cost, do you get the ability associated with the card being “faced up”, or do you only get the cards ability if you bring it out face down, and then pay the morph cost?

Entering the battlefield face up doesn't trigger 'turned faced up' abilities, I'm afraid. Thank you for asking! That said, there are abilities that turn face-up creatures face down like Weaver of Lies or Ixidron that are able to reload morph creatures. They're often a little too expensive to be worth it, but they're very fun to pull off.

Serious question here … if I have a morphed card face down in the battlefield and my opponent attacks with a 2/2 can I block with the current 2/2 creature that is morphed and kill my opponents creature then flip my morph for the morph cost and keep my morphed creature but also kill the opponents creature ??

If the 2/2s damage each other, you won't have an opportunity to flip your morphed creature before it is destroyed due to state-based effects. You'd have to flip it before damage is dealt.

Great video! I've got a morph creature in my Jhoira of the Ghitu EDH deck (Timebender, due to its great synergy with the commander), but I didn't realize there were so many ways to flip it upside down again for multiple uses.

Don't forget Morph ignores ETB's so if you have a card that can give your stuff in your hand Morph might as well do that. There is a reserved list card that pretty much gives all your creatures morph it is called Illusionary mask and it reads X: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate only as a sorcery. Sure it can just cheat out progenitus with just WUBRG and 5 other mana but it has other uses but yes you need the mana pips so say one has WUBRG you need to pay at least WUBERG then the rest does not matter as you can't just pay GGGGG as sadly the rules of the card says otherwise as it would otherwise be too broken. It allows you to bypass negative effects such as on Jokulmorder coming in tapped and having to sac 5 lands when it comes into play, pretty much it negates the negative aspects of Leviathan creatures or anything that has a ETB effect that is bad for you with the downside being the moment you tap to attack it turns face up so unless you give creatures vigilance you can't really pull off SURPRISE INFECT!!! Yeah the first time you pull off a Surprise Infect good luck keeping your face downs in games after the fact but that $200 USD reserve list card really makes for a interesting deck idea especially if a good bit of your decks cmc is the same. Pretty much a social deception type of deck as Vigilance with that card really is a gamble of letting the monster connect as your luck they have a Phage and it be the one monster you let through as just about every creature in their deck is a 7 cmc beat stick

After Ixidon’s ability resolves does everyone know who’s who forever or do you rearrange cards so that the opponent doesn’t know what to block ?
@HamHocks42
@HamHocks42 Год назад
The creature’s owner is allowed to look at it at any time, but the opponent would have to remember which was which. I don’t believe shuffling them on the field is within the rules, but that’s an interesting question and I might be wrong on that.

@@HamHocks42 Yeah it would be nice to be allowed to shuffle them, but i also think that they don't allow it.
