I think here we see the one weakness of Thrawn: Micromanagement. If I remember correctly, he does that almost every time he's in command of a fleet. Thus, once he was killed by his bodyguard, his fleet simply couldn't win anymore because they probably didn't even know the complete plan. Of course, this micromanagement is also one of Thrawn's strengths.

EU numbers are far better and realistic than Canon numbers. In canon numbers apparently WW2 had more death then a full galactic war. EU numbers of deaths are in the billions and that's realistic in a galactic war with the population of quadrillions.

I believe we all agree that Admiral Ackbar was an extremely fortunate commander. He had fully taken Palpatine's bait at Endor, got his fleet into a precarious position where he was facing decisive defeat and only prevailed because of Ewoks, and because Palpatine and Vader were killed during the battle. Just 5 years later, Admiral Ackbar is once again outsmarted, this time by Grand Admiral Thrawn, who saw through his diversions, and prepared to annihilate the New Republic fleet which he almost did, since just like Palpatine, was killed during the battle, giving Ackbar the chance to turn the tide of the battle. Generally, Ackbar is the only general I 've seen that escapes "traps" in which ironically has already fallen into.

If it wasn't for the Nohgri bodyguard turned assassin the Republic fleet was toast.

Somehow I imagined when he said "Cloaked Asteroids" Thrawn just having a good giggle in his mind about a bunch of Invisible space rocks zooming about smashing enemy ships with them not able to figure out 1. What hit us. 2. Where did this big powerful thing that hit us come from? I mean it's a really smart tactic and a very good one to annoy and troll your enemy. Just one which if you think about it is a pretty oddly funny one. Cloak a bunch of Asteroids and have them fly about and torment your enemy....let alone around their Capital planet. Thrawn sure is one good tactician and likes trolling his enemies... Truly a wise combat leader!

I love how even in death he wasn’t really “beaten”, his side just lost after he was assassinated by his bodyguard

How they defeated him? They didn't. He was killed by his bodyguard.

In the end of the battle, the Imperials lost a few escort ships and only one badly damaged Star Destroyer. However, Ackbar’s fleet was decimated with the majority of his ships damaged or destroyed. I believe if Thrawn had survived and defeated Ackbar, this would’ve convinced the other warlords to fully back him. I have no doubt Thrawn’s aim was to gain the support of the Pentastar Alignment because they have the biggest avaliable fleet. I’m not sure if Delvardus, Harrsk, or the Teradoc Brothers would join him but because of Zsinj’s connections with Thrawn, I can see the remnants of Zsinj’s fleet who joined the various warlords abandon their positions to join Thrawn. Loyalists like Admiral Teren Rogriss may see Thrawn as a legitimate leader for the Empire and gather as many forces to join Thrawn. Now that his fleet now includes the Pentastar Alignment fleet and the various warships from other warlords that joined him, I can see Thrawn making a beeline to capture Coruscant and the shipyards at Kuat. This will shatter New Republic morale even if they don’t capture the New Republic leadership. Let us remember that the Empire had an unknown number of Bellator, Assertor, Mandator III, and other unknown classes of Star Dreadnoughts. I have no doubt that Thrawn would make their capture a priority. We would likely see a duel between the Lusankya and the Reaper but with Thrawn in command, he would probably have plans to capture the Lusankya instead of destroying it. Once the New Republic was dealt with, he would turn his attention to the warlords and give them an ultimatum. Join or die. Even if they join him, Thrawn would either keep them around to see if they’ll change, or eliminate them to avoid any chances of a power struggle.

I thought this was such a more fitting ending to Thrawn rather than the absolute bs we get in Rebels.

I really wish Thrawn survived. He was such a mastermind, and if he had been truly defeated, I'm sure he would have surrendered, but shook hands with the New Republic leaders. Telling them it was a good fight, based on the "Who is Grand Admiral Thrawn" video.

I've read the novel and the comic. It's good to finally see a Battle Breakdown of it. In the novel I remember shortly after Thrawn was killed and the battle was getting out of control, Pellaeon was thinking 'Thrawn could still turn this into a victory, but I am not Grand Admiral Thrawn'. He then ordered the fleet to retreat.

Use your create a fleet rules and assume there is a resource shortage. I love when yo examine battles but I think you could use your talent to create amazing battles.

Ah yes, Thrawn looked at some art once done by Admiral Ackbar, and magically deduced his plan. The Thrawn series was really well-written, but some of the ideas were just plain dumb. I was getting really sick of him magically being right every time. It would have been nice to see a genuine miscalculation on Thrawn's part, and see him hastily try to improvise.

I’m late to the party on this, but I loved Thrawn’s end. It just fit so well to me. This grand strategic genius who had woven a massive web of lies, strategy, and war, brought down by the one element he failed to consider. He assumed that Rook was going to be loyal, that this simple savage warrior couldn’t possibly see past the lies he had told.

I've never understood what happened at the end of this fight. So Thrawn ambushes the Republic fleet and starts pulverizing it. Wedge muses that threatening the shipyards would force the Imperials to either A) divert ships from the ambush and let the Republic escape, or B) lose the shipyards. The smugglers break out and the shipyard is threatened, Thrawn is killed, and apparently Pellaeon chooses option C: run away and fail both objectives. If they were going to withdraw, surely the logical place to retreat to would have been the shipyards they wanted to protect, with those scary Golan platforms, but no, it seems they just left. Was it that Pellaeon and everyone besides Thrawn just don't know how to fight? Did they stage the ambush with an inferior force, counting on Thrawn's tactics to win the day? Did C'baoth's death hurl all the Imperial crewers into confusion like at Endor? It just seems like the fight jumped from "Republic looking desperately for a way to escape" to "Imperials trying to get away before they're destroyed," and Zahn didn't really explain what happened to eliminate the Imperials' numerical advantage. I originally thought that maybe I'd misread it because of unclear writing, and the Republic fleet did run, leaving Bilbringi in Imperial hands, but after looking it up, apparently the Imperials really did give up and leave.

Who is excited to see Thrawn on the next Mandalorian episode?

If I recall in the Yuuzhan Vong war, they discovered a cloaked Golan II Defense Platform located at Bilbringi. It was probably another surprise known only to Thrawn that he could have activated to defeat the New Republic.

Ok I have a question and a battle strategy. Did the Empire or Thrawn uses mines? In this battle Thrawn had Interdictor star destorys to pull the the alliance fleet out of hyperspace. Thrawn knew that the alliance was coming, why not mine the area the interdictor would pull them out at?

I just got done listening to the audiobook Thrawn Trilogy. This particular part where Thrawn dies made me sad. He was such an awesome villain. Didn’t see it coming. Loved the books

Honestly I don't like how Thrawn died. It would've much better and cooler if he was kissed by another admiral who had outsmarted him, like actually outsmarted and out manuevered Thrawn. I think that would've been a better death for him. But nope, just gets pew pewed in the back Julius Caesar style.

I'd say that was the best way Thrawn could've died, he couldn't conquer the New Republic because heroes, and he couldn't be defeated in a fleet battle.

Honestly, this feels like one big cop out. Over the years, the writers wrote themselves into a corner with Thrawn. How do you beat the unbeatable? Simple....you don't. So, they had to come up with a very cheap, round about way to bring down Thrawn. This can be saved, however.....just like the Exhaust Port plot hole in episode 4. This "bodyguard" could be a Rebel Alliance assassin that had to work his way up the ladder until he finally was in range of the most untouchable person the Empire had at it's disposal. And thus, he would finish the job when Thrawn's attention was on a very important battle. This would make Thrawn's "So artistically done" line hit that much harder. And now that I'm writing it out......I'd actually like to see this story come to fruition. But, it does look like Thrawn is going to play a role in the Mandalorian or Ashoka's show. So....we'll just have to find out.

I'm surprised that Palleon was so eager to signal a retreat, considering how much he is venerated later in Imperial history. I wonder if there was less cohesion and/or professionalism among the imperial rank-and-file than what was implied to the reader from just The Last Command.

I'm kind of curious if they're going to continue to use Trawn. In the series finale of Star Wars: Rebels, he and Ezra are pulled into hyperspace, but the ending of Rebels implies that Ezra is still alive (hence Ashoka finding Sabine and leaving to search for him), but it stands to reason that this means both of them are alive...somewhere. Sabine and Ashoka begin their search after the Battle of Endor. It's kind of curious, then, what happens to Thrawn in that time interval, if he lives, and if he does, what becomes of him after that point. Even with magical hyperspace whales, presumably at some point or another, they will return to normal space. I'm kind of curious where in the timeline that would end up being (time-space being a little wonky so it's possible it could be quite some time later), and how that woud bear on the later/new trilogy time period.

(24th request) 1 CAS Class Assault Carrier with 4 CSS Class Battlecruisers and 4 SDV-class heavy corvettes VS 1 Bellator Class Super Star Destroyer (yes i look it up and the Bellator Class has Fighters about 100 of them) 4 Imperial 2 class Star Destroyers and 4 Dreadnought Class Heavy cruisers (theses ships use to be Victory 2 class Star Destroyers but that would give the Empire too much an edge in the battle so i made them Dreadnought class Heavy cruisers instated too make it equal in a way)

Make this a Galactic Versus episode: STAR WARS 2M Saber tank vs. HALO M820Skorpion tank vs. COMMAND AND CONQUER GDI Mammoth MK III I'd love to see which of theese tanks comes out on top.

It's important to remember that the asteroids over Coruscant were dealt with just before the battle thanks to Karrde knowing that there were only 22.

So they didn't defeat him at all, like so many before him he was betrayed and assassinated.... If the empire could just stop killing eachother they would have ruled the universe a long time ago.

My theaory of what if Thrawn would have won this battle: The resurrected clone Palpatine would probably come back and "REMOVE" Thrawn from his throne permanently. Bringing the Galaxy back into terror and oppression. 🤔😟

To be honest I'm disapointed about Thrawn's death. He can create a battle master plan just by staring at art but he can't anticipate his own guard actions?

It's honestly the most disappointing ending I ever read. It's too easy and eventhough Thrawn died, such a fleet would have a few admirals to lead the squadrons and the senior one would take command...and would wreck the New Republic fleet. Yeah, they would loose some shipyards...but would obliterate the whole fleet, blocked by the interdictors. But it was more easy to say "Thrawn dies, Republic wins ! End of the book". Problem is that the author is not a strategist at all. How the New Republic won ? Thanks to being the good guys during the last battle of the trilogy.

In my own personal opinion, I've never really liked Thrawn. I think he's very overrated, but he does objectively have some strengths. I just think he has a lot of weaknesses that get overlooked, in both Canon and Legends

Meh. Thrawn was killed too easily. And his line of "artistically done" is ghastly overrated.

The Thrawn trilogy is great but as a fan of huge space battles, I had hoped for a much more comprehensive battle with far more losses on the New Republic's side at the least. I also find it odd for Pellaeon to retreat, giving up some very valuable shipyards. You'd think with Thrawn's brilliance, he'd have a secondary fleet on standby to deploy behind the New Republic Fleet once they started to believe that the New Republic could win the battle. Perhaps more tricks and feints. But well, even Grand Admiral Thrawn cannot defeat the Author.

I've known of Thrawn since I played Tie Fighter back in the 90's but never got far enough into lore to really know his story so I"m coming from a nonthrawn fanboy perspective: This battle wasn't so much won by the New Republic so much as it was simply lost by Thrawn imo. I personally find the fate of the battle tied to thrawn's death as kind of silly since they looked so out numbered.

Pellaeon really screwed up here. Even without the expertise of Thrawn he could have hold the current battleline and allow the ships to keep firing. Even by risking the shipyards during this battle.

From all i heard about thrawn to be assassinated by his bodyguard dose not feel right i think he should die in combat being defeated by a superior strategist everything I hear about him it was the best strategist to be interfered by someone better with a better strategy not just sheer numbers or luck would be a great end to him. We don't want great warriors dying by sickness or of old age we want them to fall in battle against a great foe. And if this is not canon then keep him alive for the silver screen.
